Yikes!

State Senator Larry Taylor represents the people of Santa Fe, Texas.  He’s a Republican.

Taylor did an interview on Houston Public Radio about the Governor’s “round table” discussion group concerning gun safety. Something very telling and horribly unfortunate about Texas happened during the interview.

In the first 30 second of the interview, Taylor says, “there’s some things the Governor is working on … that he might be able to pull the trigger on before we go into session.”

Pull the trigger on?

Gun culture in Texas runneth deep and long.  There are some folks who would say, “aww, he didn’t mean nothin’ by that,” and others who say, ‘you’re just lookin’ to blame poor ole dumb Larry because he’s a Republican.”

Actually, neither. Larry isn’t even particularly dumb for a Republican. He, like so many other Texans, say “pull the trigger” instead of “git ‘er done.” And it’s always used meaning something positive, like it’s a dandy good thing to pull the trigger.

Please feel free to go listen to the first 30 seconds of the interview so you can hear it for yourself.  If you listen to more than that, I am not responsible for your subsequent mental health.

Thanks to Mark for the heads up.

  1. In a job I had years ago, the budget guy I had to deal with for project money used “pull the trigger on” endlessly. Even before those exchanges I hated the phrase. After Columbine, which was my personal line in the sand moment, the phrase is intolerable. From anyone.

“NOT EVEN DUCT TAPE CAN FIX STUPID”
“BUT IT CAN MUFFLE THE SOUND”

Let’s not forget Sarah Palin’s “crosshairs” comment which is variously lampooned and debunked. It still lays there like a stink that won’t go away.

Ok it is a common expression in Texas, I get that. That being said an intelligent and sensitive person right after that was said you make a comment . Such as ” that is the wrong expression and I do apologize for that” and then more on!

I think he meant “Push the ‘Get Someone Else to Do the Work’ button.”

  6. He did miss one opportunity. Instead “things the Governor is working on” could have been:

…there’s some things the Governor needs to lock and load so … he might be able to pull the trigger before we go into session.

  7. That’s right up there with “free, white and 21” and so forth. And the users just don’t get it! Not even when the idea is driven into them with a jack hammer!

    Can I say that…?

  9. Old Fart says:

The interviewer should have asked: “So you are going to ‘pull the trigger’ on ways to protect our children from being murdered by gun violence”…
