Wight!

April 16, 2018 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Several people have sent me this sign for Republican candidate, Phillip Wight.

Yeah, Phillip is running for county commissioner in North Carolina.  Once the word got out that some people were upset by the sign, Phillip said …

“I have no words for that,” he said. “I’m not that guy. If you want to go in that direction, anybody who knows me knows I’m not a racist. I hate to even use that word. I don’t care about the color of your skin, I don’t care about your gender, I don’t care about your politics, or your religion.”

Really?  Well, he’s running in the Republican primary so you’d think he’s care about my politics and if he doesn’t care about my gender, he’s apt to follow me into the wrong bathroom.  And I imagine Phillip might not care about my religions, just so long it’s Christianity.

But during Mr. Wight’s 15 minutes of fame, he also wants you to know …

What he does care about, he says, is elected officials raising taxes, violating rights and bypassing the Constitution.

He said his priorities are loving God, his family and supporting the Second Amendment at all costs, but the 50-year-old small business owner and confessed Rodney Dangerfield fan also said he’s “an equal opportunity offender when it comes to jokes” and that the thought of using the slogan had crossed his mind during previous campaigns.

Y’all, I think he does care about my politics.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

Well, dang, I missed that connection. My head was all filled with Elmer Fudd going on about wascally wabbits, maybe hoping that Wight guy was the wight guy to finally do something about it.
I have become almost pathologically naive, I guess.

  2. Jere, that’s what I was thinking too. Of course Elmer wasn’t very bright, but he was very white. The sign probably fits the candidate on all counts.

  3. Jere’s first instincts are right. Whomever wrote that sign was playing on the riff “Vote for the RIGHT guy” with a lisp. His pitch is all about right-wing politics and being right all the time about it.

That doesn’t mean of course that he isn’t a venal a-hole and/or a racist. But a race message like the one supposed is simply not typical even for politicians trying to appeal to racists.

  4. As a classic fantasy fan, the word “wight” means a spirit of the undead, as in Tolkien’s barrowwights. Think the White Walkers from Game of Thrones.

  5. It’s North Carolina.

For some readers, the Wight Guy is the Right Guy. Pure and extremely simple message for a simple voter.

For other readers, the Wight Guy is the White Guy, a specific message subtly delivered to non-white voters generally, but to black voters very specifically.

    A two-fer as it were.

I hope no one, including his mother and wife vote for Philip Wight. Glassbowl.

    Oh come on!

Didn’t the sign printer say something like: Are you absolutely sure you want it this way???

  7. I hope every black person in North Carolina gets out there to vote and kicks his Wight butt!

Micr: “It’s North Carolina.” ‘Nuff said.

  9. It’s either a hopelessly lame attempt at humor or a deliberate racial pitch with built-in plausible deniability. I’m going with option 2.

I understand Wight’s plight. I also refuse to use the word Right for anything that’s not directional. I only use the adjective Correct now.

Thanks Obama! Oops I mean Thanks, every Republican since Lincoln!

@ Origuy: I’m going for evil ghost as well. On a side note, it’s my understanding from my Chinese friends that the Chinese term for white folks is “ ghost.”
