Dude, Take a Knee and Learn the Words

I dunno, I just find it disconcerting that that the only words he knows to the National Anthem is about the rockets red glare and bombs busting in air.

  1. That’s cause Putin doesn’t know the words to The Star Spangled Banner. As a puppet, Drumpf only speaks the words the puppeteer knows.

It’s also weird the way he keeps patting himself, instead of just holding his hand over his heart like a normal person.

  3. I was in the marching band. We never learned the words, either.

    Just kidding.

    About not learning the words.

I was in the marching band.

  4. AliceBeth says:

I am not a fan of this song. It is too militaristic (and yes I know when it was written) for me. I prefer America the Beautiful. However, having said that, I know the words. How can you not have listened to it as many times (oh, maybe he does not listen to anyone but himself) as one might think he has in over 70 years as a citizen, and not know the words??? I guess the question is did he ever know them???

  5. He looks impatient, fidgeting with his hand, side glances, half lip-syncing the words. Respect? Honestly, I’ve seen more focus, respect and understanding for what the song is intended to convey from football players on a knee.

    With ya!
I’ve always preferred “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” over other American songs, including Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful. My Country was sung often in my elementary school, less so as I grew older.

  7. 1) Learned recently that the choice of the anthem is relatively recent, 1931, though it had been used before that but fo a lack of an official anthem. Much like how the Aussies have used Waltzing Matilda before adopting a different tune as the official anthem.
    2) It was a battle in part because of just what Alicebeth commented on its militaristic bent plus its racist verse that is usually left out ( about striking fear into runaway slaves)
    3) question for legal eagles if demented donnie sits down for interview and it becomes a bit of a marathon ( 6 + hrs) and if during that time demented donnie either wigs out completely or show dramatic “sundowning” behavior do the lawyers have either the right or obligation to go public with that?
Public interest ( well being not just news interest) v. confidentiality?

  8. He probably thinks all the cheering and excitement is for him. Actually, he was also booed.

  9. Micr–

You might be onto something there. The Star Spangled Banner has some pretty unfortunate lyrics (the war stuff and the racist stuff), and it’s a bear to sing.

My Country ‘Tis of Thee has the disadvantage of being sung to the same tune as God Save the Queen, so there’s that. And the last verse is pretty heavily religious, which doesn’t sit real well with me.

Same problem with America the Beautiful, but at least it’s relatively easy to sing sort of on key and it’s got its own tune.

  10. Oh, I think he deserves a bit more credit. I’m sure he got “what so proudly we heiled” to come out the way he intended.
