Boy, I Didn’t See That Coming.
Ole Bubba and I were watching MSNBC for a little while last night and on comes this Hispanic guy defending Donald Trump’s immigration plan. Among many insane things he said was this little tidbit.
Marco Gutierrez, in an interview with host Joy Reid, described Latino culture as “imposing” and “dominant,” and suggested that without the GOP presidential nominee’s 10-point plan to overhaul the United States’ immigration policies, there might be “taco trucks on every corner.”
“I don’t even know what that means, and I’m almost too afraid to ask,” Reid responded.
Oh hell, I know what it means. It means that this idiot thinks taco trucks on every corner is a bad thing.
Honey, I live in Texas. If you can’t walk or bike ride to a taco truck, you move.
If Latino culture is imposing and dominant, we’d all be speaking Spanish and drinking tequila in Texas. Oh wait …
Y’all, the expression on Joy Reid’s face was worth a million bucks.
That expression was oh so appropriate for a woman who had just seen the insides of the bowels of hell.
I stole this graphic from my friend La Lisa Hernandez. It spoke to my heart.
I love Joy. Too bad she was not chosen as a debate moderator. Joy would chew and spit Drumpf out with a side-eye~
1I would love a taco truck on every corner. Maybe we could alternate with Indian Tacos. This guy obviously doesn’t appreciate the finer things in life.
2She handled that idiot like a pro! I love my taco trucks, and now they are even a TV show on the Food Network. And in these food trucks that are now so trendy, they are owned and run by way more than Mexicans. Thank you, Mexicans for such a great idea!
3A Latino man afraid and concerned that Latino culture will become “dominant”? Wow. Self-hate much? As someone on another site commented; Latinos for Trump = Jews for Hitler. Nuff said.
4Yes, I saw this on MSNBC, as well and I saw that look on Joy’s face. I’m sitting in my living room saying: Whuuuuut? Hot damn, taco trucks!! Some of my favorite food is Mexican … the other is Chinese! LOL
5If that is a “con” issue, sign me up!! We have some excellent Mexican restaurants right here in Canon City, CO … good margueritas, too!
I saw this interview also, and I think the guy is a fake Latino, one more of Trump’s surrogates playing a role. My Mexican friends are much smarter than that, and they would love a taco truck on the corner.
6The culture isn’t imposing, they just have really good, inexpensive food. I wish we had more than one taco truck in our town. I personally love that certain regional Mexican cuisine makes good use of “variety meats” and inexpensive, sometimes fatty cuts of meat.
I will never forgive whoever it was that made boneless, skinless chicken breasts a thing. If Mexican culture can free us from that tyranny, VIVA MEXICO!
7John’s mama was prescient the day she named her baby girl. Thank you Joy’s mama.
8Now Donnie is resorting to bribing us. Kool. A Taco truck on every corner. If only he’d include a soft pretzel vendor, too, surely I’d vote for him. /s
9How much self-loathing must a minority member have to support tRump and the GOP.. it truly boggles my mind.
10I gotta remember to proofread before I submit. JOY’S mama. Not John. Joy. Damn autocorrect.
11Jill Biden @JillBidenVeep
Joe is drafting a bill as we speak. He got no sleep last night. #TacoTrucksOnEveryCorner
127:37 AM – 2 Sep 2016
Joy for president. Love the way she handles interviewees when they need handling. She should have her own weeknight program.
13Dominant? What? Is it just the trucks that are the issue or what they sell? Really and truly would like that straightened out. In half an hour’s ride on the Metro I can be in downtown D.C. where there are so many food trucks you can walk across the street on their roofs. Objections to all this? Haven’t heard one yet. All kinds of food: Hispanic, Asian, Greek and more. Cheaper than eating at one of the overpriced D.C. restaurants and very often the food is better!
14Just who the heck is he representing Drumpf’s check is in the mail. He just lost Drumpf more votes by trying to appear supportive. More taco trucks, less hate!
15Lisbeth – I had no idea Jill Biden was so funny!
And THIS is one of the reasons we love her husband:
“Joe took Bo Obama for a burger. #NationalDogDay”
16Well, they are pandering to the stupid among us, of which there appears to be a YUUUUUGGEE number of, believe me. Sad. A mess.
17Hey Donnie, throw in a few Schnellimbiss trucks and I’ll roll over like a puppy to have my belly rubbed. But, I still won’t vote for you.
18Merry –
Exactly what I’ve been thinking. I’d seen Reid as a panel member before, and knew she was really smart. But it’s been an absolute pleasure this week, watching her handle recalcitrant guests like a skilled dog trainer with a pack of rambunctious puppies.
I like Chris Hayes. He’s a great field reporter, and a good interviewer. But sometimes he gets run over by his more vocal guests. What I’d love to see: Hayes keeps his show, but switch Chris Matthews’ Hardball with Reid. Let her do real reporting and interviews every night, and let Matthews have weekend mornings for his politics-as-sports shtick, and waxing nostalgic yet again about Reagan and Tip O’Neill.
19Wouldn’t said taco trucks have to make enough profit to stay in business? That’s a lot of tacos.
20A taco truck on my corner? GREAT!
21Wow! Just WOW! Dude has the essence of the culture war in one or two mostly incomprehensible sentences. As an aside, I have driven more than a few blocks out of my way to find a decent taco truck. T’ain’t easy in DFW. I’ve eaten off great wagons in LA, NY and Seoul. A taco truck on every corner is more like a description of heaven than a loss in the culture war!
22Seriously, tacos aren’t hard to make(I prefer burritos). Go to the nearest grocery store and stock up on taco/burrito shells and meat. Then raid the garden for the good stuff in the filling.
23We don’t have enough taco trucks in Alaska yet. Vote Hillary for tacos on every corner.
24epo … it ain’t the same … they taste sooooo much better when they are made by those who make them for a living! LOL
25Lunargent, you’ve got the right idea for MSNBC weekly shows. I don’t watch Chris Matthews. He’s too bombastic and doesn’t let guests talk. Not too fond of Lawrence O’Donnell either. Keep Rachel at #1, then Joy, then Chris. Good shows.
26A taco truck on every corner? Do we need to notify Homeland Security?
“If you see something, eat something.”
27Tacos. Yum. I live in a town know. As “Little Seoul”. Great Korean food but sadly rather thin on tacos. One or two of those trucks would be welcome here.
28I was so incensed about Tio Tomas’ remark that I, who has never been to a taco truck, have vowed to visit as many as I can in the near future.
29Something just occurred to me. Ammunition for discussions with my conservative buddy at work. I believe that most folks obsessed with immigration when asked if they would feel as strongly about it if the “horde” were coming from Europe, would say that that would be totally different. More the merrier. And that’s when I’ll point out that the percentage of foreign-born population from Europe (immigrants) went from 75 percent to 11 percent in the last 54 years or so. You think it might be that in that amount of time those countries have enacted progressive policies that that make their homeland more appealing? Most of which were ideas originated in America. In other words, the folks who they would prefer to have don’t want anything to do with us. Sorry mama, cover your ears. Because we’ve swung so far as a country to the realm of asshole.
30Those statistics come from someone called the Migration Policy Institute
31Debbo – I don’t watch Matthews either. But I do like O’Donnell. He’s calm and professional, though it’s kind of funny when he occasionally loses his temper. Early on, he had whacko Birther Orly Taitz on, and was so outraged that he just went off on her.
Except for Matthews, he’s the only one there who’s worked in government, AFAIK. And has also worked in Hollywood, a source of some good stories and perspective. And though I know he’s not your preferred gender, I think he’s a tasty piece of Eye Candy, Senior Division.
32Addendum: O’Donnell also characterizes himself as a socialist, in the most practical, transactional sense. And calls out Trump’s statements, calling them LIES. What would be viewed as inflammatory if delivered by someone else comes across as true and reasonable, which it is. Because it’s delivered by a silver-haired, white Irish Catholic guy, using well-modulated tones. Don’t underestimate the value of that.
33Taco trucks…. If only the TABC would let them serve adult beverages 24/7…
Ms Reid MUST have the patience of a saint. She doesn’t go off on these fools Mclaughlin style.
34Marcia in Colo- my tummy can’t handle the modicum of spiciness Taco Johns puts in their food, plus the grease tastes like it hasn’t been changed in like forever. Potato Olays have a bout a pound too much salt in each and every serving cup.
35A friend of mine in California (one side of his family is Latino) says some California Latinos–the ones who have certain names and arrived via Spain–are extremely conservative and extremely proud. They regard the post-WWII Mexican-Latinos as low-life who are ruining *their* reputation as conquistadors. I know as much about California politics as he does about Texas politics, but that may be the explanation of this fellow who is, apparently, one of the elite “we tried to close the door behind us so the riffraff wouldn’t get in” types. I gleaned this from a discussion on another venue (and not one you want to get into, since there’s a sourpuss woman who hates Hillary and calls her a neocon.)

37I’m in NYC. There’s a plethora of Mexican restaurants within walking distance (varying wildly in quality and price), but only one taco truck. I live right near the corner of my block, and I’d love to have a taco truck on that corner, but only if they sell nopal tacos (I’m vegan and they’re my favorite of all time). Yum.
38Tacos are okay but they crumble. Personally, I like burritos and fajitas. But if the taco truck delivers, I’m standing by the front door.
39Furthermore, I don’t count those crumbly salad dishes as Mexican food.. (You hear that, Donny?) Just don’t ask the waiter if the food is HOT. He’ll say OH NO, not hot at all. Huh.
@PKM #9- I don’t know about the soft pretzels. I’d prefer burritos preferably chorizo burritos. I’m a native Coloradan and have done a couple tours through the state mostly in the Greeley area.I’m spoiled for Mexican food. On my second trip through Greeley I was a partner with two other young men in a home building /framing/ exterior trim subcontractor business. We had an agreement with two Latina ladies who ran a taco truck to be sure to come by our jobsite about noon every day.I had to leave that area behind, but have found excellent tacos and burritos where I presently live served out of a converted camping trailer( my cats love the beef from the burrito Supreme.I’m hoping the taco trucks is a promise. This site needs an edit function in the worst way.
