The Sweetest Thing You’ll Ever See

August 08, 2016 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

I have friends who live in Missouri who let me know that maybe, just maybe, Missouri is trying to beat Texas in the political division rankings.  They send me all the information I need to know that bean dip dumb is contagious.

However, this comes close to being the sweetest thing that ever happened.  Anywhere.

Gov. Jay Nixon

Gov. Jay Nixon

Missouri’s Governor Jay Nixon, who is a damn Democrat, has repeatedly withheld funding for the public defender’s office.  The public defender’s office asked for a $23 million increase in funding.  The state legislature gave them $4.5 million.  The Governor is withholding $3.5 million of that because he thinks they don’t need it.  They do.  Badly.

So, the guy who is the head of the public defender’s office, Michael Barrett, has found out that he has authority to appoint any lawyer to a client in the public defender’s office.

Michael Barrett made me the happiest woman on earth when he appointed Governor Jay Nixon to defend a client in the public defender’s system.

“… given the extraordinary circumstances that compel me to entertain any and all avenues for relief, it strikes me that I should begin with the one attorney in the state who not only created this problem, but is in a unique position to address it.”

Well done, Barrett, well done.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

Ha! It’s the old 2 birds with one stone ploy. Hope Nixon(how did a Dem get a name like that?) does his duty and learns a thing or two in the process.

As is said… Turnabout is fair play.

  4. Has there been any follow-up on this story since it first appeared last week? No comments from the Gov, or anyone else, for that matter, that I’ve seen.

Excellent move Mr. Barrett. BTW, Gov. Nixon does not sound like any Democrat I know! He needs to change the initial after his name to (R).

  6. I see the humor in this, but I do pity the defendant burdened with Gov Nixon as his PD. Criminal defense is consequential art form and should be practiced only by those with a country doctor’s bedside manner, a huge heart and a killer’s instinct to match.

  7. I’m with Micr. Great move, but the accused shouldn’t suffer for it, whether guilty or not.

  8. Actually, JJ, one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen was Obama’s acceptance speech on election night 2008. Now if Clinton can kick Trump’s sorry lying ass from coast to coast and both houses of Congress turn blue, that would be another sweet highlight of the century!

  9. Micr, I’m a retired public defender and you nailed it. Thank you.

Fortunately for those in need of public defenders, the big bad wolf is dead. Scalia was never a fan of PDs and he was also against insuring defendants got competent legal advice. Some of his rulings are hard to believe.

Must be a scary feeling to be represented in a murder case by a lawyer who had never handled one before. They don’t all work out like “My Cousin Vinny”.

    Now, Juanita.

Go easy on the bean dip. I know that when you don’t have any, and someone mentions ‘bean dip,’ you’re like, ‘meh.’ But when it’s open and next to the Fritos, it’s the BOMB, yo. Much smarter than Republicans any day.

Guv’s spokesman says according to Mo statute only circuit court can appoint private attorney as public defender. Also claims Nixon has increased PD’s budget by 15%. I think maybe his nose is growing.

I lived in Missouri most of my adult life, and I’m here to tell you that this is what you get when even the Democrats in your state are snacilbupeR dumb.

In most of the state, the only **ahem** “Democrats” who can win are R’s in D clothing. And Nixon just proved it. Save money by refusing to fund necessary services. Uh huh, that’ll work if you believe anyone who lands inside a court is guilty and doesn’t deserve a lawyer anyway — unless they’re rich enough to afford one, THEN the “innocent till proven guilty” rule kicks in.

  14. I want to see how well his guv made out in court! Where is the follow up, if any? If it goes the way I think it did I could spend some valuable time giggling and snorting!
