Well Played, OU, Well Played

I live in Texas so I have never said a kind word about OU in my entire life.

That changes today.

Here is the letter the President of the University of Oklahoma issued.  Click the little one to see the bigger one.

I’ll say amen to that and pass the plate.

i’m impressed. Truly. If more of us had that kind of gumption the world would be a better place.

  2. I agree JJ.

    Swift… and sure.

  3. Chloe Bear says:

Kudos also to the national organization of the fraternity. Within hours of hearing of the horrible video the chapter was removed as an affiliate.

  4. Corinne Sabo says:

    Boren did good.

  5. More of this in Missouri would be a good thing, considering some of their disgusting police.

  6. God my lips surely will burst into flames. Uhumph.
    Zero U did good.
That was an unnatural act. I’m going someplace to wash my mouth out … with Wild Turkey and 7Up.

  7. Annabelle Lee says:

I’d like to see some action taken to discipline the students who participated, aside from losing their precious frat house.

  8. Wow!!!! I have lived long enough to see someone up and slap the bleep out of real offenders, in public, and for all the right reasons!

    Outstanding!

    Amen, President Boren, amen!

I am moved to tears. I never thought I’d see such a thing out of Oklahoma.

  12. Yes, outstanding! I had to google the incident, because I hadn’t yet heard about it. I was appalled and think justice was swift and sure.

I did notice that one commentator simply couldn’t believe this could happen in Oklahoma. I assume that person has been hiding under a rock all his life. I have one thing to say to that: Tulsa Race Riot/1921, the mass murder of African Americans and fire annihilation of their community by the white residents of Tulsa.

  13. Wonderful! This man is a real leader, and he’s leading in the right direction.

You expect more from former Democrat Governors and Senators and you get it. Boren was both. 🙂

Good on the OU Prez. Glad none of those boys are my sons – and they had better be too. Also. As well.

  16. Tom Blue says:

    Hi, Lynne,

I’m afraid I didn’t express myself very well up above. I know about Oklahoma, trust me, I’m from west Texas. What I meant was, I was profoundly moved that the president in a University in Oklahoma(!) would show such leadership and take such an immediate and strong stand against racism and bigotry in his school. The norm in the red states, as we all know, is for “leaders” in those states to defend, apologize for, and show their own racism and bigotry. To remain silent, at the very minimum, at this kind of vile behavior. I doubt we’d ever see or will ever see such a thing in Texas, or any of the Southern states.

And I never thought in my life that a man and a leader in Oklahoma would stand up and thoroughly denounce this behavior. We should see it more often.

  17. As an Oklahoman and a Sooner, for once in a loooong time I am proud of my home State and alma mater, albeit on account of a despicable act by some foolish (and I’m sure wealty) twerps. And EPO is dead right – this is a fine example of leadership one should expect from a Democratic Governor and U.S. Senator.

    17
  18. I don’t know much about Oklahoma (and most of that from one friend who grew up there, taught with me for a while in Texas, and then moved back), but I started thinking I could like that state when I heard that they think early childhood education is a good idea. Now they think civil university behavior is a good idea, too. Maybe my friend’s not the only good egg there!

  19. Marilyn Copeland says:

I think it should be noted that the OU President who moved so decisively to deal with this problem is no other than David Lyle Boren, former Governor and Democratic US Senator from Oklahoma.

I think it should be noted that the OU president who moved so decisively is none other than David Boren, former Governor and Democratic US Senator for the state of Oklahoma.

  21. The content of Boren’s letter is truly impressive, but what impressed me even more was the speed of his reaction. Too often these things are allowed to drag out, which sends a mixed message. There is no mixed message here.

    21
  22. Marge Wood says:

Thank you, Marilyn. Is he related to Jodie Boren? All of us better pay attention to who is doing what and make noise everywhere we can.

    22
  23. Rufus Firefly says:

It should be noted that Noble Leslie DeVotie, a founder of SAE, died when he feel off a gang plank into Mobile Bay where he drowned in 2 feet of water. Rumor has it that he was drunk but like everything down here he was a hero to some and is noted in some publications as being the first casualty of the Civil War when he meet his unfortunate end on February 12, 1861.

PS: Noble was also a Baptist minister.

Does my heart good to see something sane come out of Oklabama, or Georgiassippi but then there is still pretty nutty stuff here in Virginiassouri.
