Fun With Guns: Giving the Finger Edition
So we’re in Glasgow, Kentucky today.
A police officer is suing a gun store.
According to a civil lawsuit filed Friday, former Glasgow police officer Darrell Smith went into Barren Outdoors back in March and asked to see a .380 caliber handgun.
He then held the gun after receiving it from under the counter. Smith began to examine the gun and then cocked it. The gun was actually loaded and fired, shooting off part of Smith’s index finger.
The officer claims he lost his job because of the injury.
There’s a video of it at the link. The way I count it, there were 4 people downrange, one salesman at the counter, and a damn idiot holding a gun.
Something, I dunno, tells me that losing part of his index finger on his left hand when he’s obviously right handed didn’t cause him to lose his job. However, I do believe he violated the damfool city ordinance of Glasgow.
Thanks to Carl for the heads up.
THIS is ‘serve and protect’? Shooting off own finger? I’m staying out of Kentucky!
11. Do not store loaded guns.
2. Do not load weapons in a gun store.
3. Do not hand a person a loaded weapon.
4. Ensure by proper inspection that the weapon in your hand is unloaded.
5. Assume every weapon is loaded until you verify it is safe to handle.
6. Do not put any part of your body in front of the barrel except for gun smithing purposes.
7. Do not point a gun at anything you do not intend to shoot.
8. Do not pull the trigger of a weapon unless it is properly aimed a something you intend to shoot.
If these two nimrods had followed even one of these rules, Nimrod B would still have his finger. Guns are dangerous. THAT’S THE POINT! I have guns myself, I am not “anti-gun” but I would ban both of these bozos from touching a firearm for life.
2When your job description is two things, To Serve and Protect, you really have to do both.
3Mr. Smith, presumably a police officer trained in the handling of guns, does not have a leg to stand on, or in this case, a finger to point. He was negligent and put everyone in that store at risk.
4That’s what got him fired. Thank goodness his stupidity only injured hisownself.
Rule numero uno-never assume a gun is unloaded. If you can’t remember this rule, you have no business handling weapons.
5I don’t have guns and I AM anti-gun, but I know every one of those rules that Henry listed. How come two professionals who work with guns every day– the salesman and the cop– don’t know them? They should both find another line of work.
6If they was E-lecktrishions, they’d both be fried to a crisp. Hmmm…sounds like lunch. Better go get me some.
7“Fried to a crisp” makes me realize how much the whole thing sounds like a cartoon.
8I have to say that I think the store bears more responsibility for this than the customer, although the customer certainly isn’t blameless. Why on earth would a gunstore keep a handgun loaded and hand it to a customer to try? That’s gross negligence, IMO. But certainly the customer should verify that the weapon is unloaded before doing anything else.
9Most of the things we talk about could be great cartoons. Wish I were a cartoonist. Thanks, Henry, for the list.
10I am definitely tempted to offer Smith my middle finger.
Seems as though the other people in the store should sue Smith for scaring and endangering them.
11Good men have no need of rules. The rest of us have man.
I memorized these many many years ago…
121. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
I do hate auto-correct…
13“Good men have no need of rules. The rest of us have many.”
Whoa! A municipality somewhere on this planet and hatched in this country actually came down hard on some fool who definitely should have known better about guns? Wait a sec. I gotta go check and see if Hell froze over.
14Henry @ 2-
Exactly, I began learning those gun rules at about six years old.
Mah Fellow Murkuhn @ 9-
15My first thought too, the store and salesperson bear primary responsibility for this incident (say about 51%), saleperson should have double checked the pistol before giving it to the customer (and whoever put it in a loaded condition too); the dumbazz cop 49% for forgetting any weapons training he may have ever received.
But then the stoopid gets thick around any teaparty central gathering location.
From my boot camp days at Parris Island, 49 years ago next month, you’re taught to always treat a gun as it’s loaded!
16When you treat a gun as it’s loaded, you don’t accidently shoot off your fingertip!
