Yeah, But Can You Name Me One Louisiana Congressman Who Hasn’t?
Steve Scalise is the new House Majority Whip, making him the third most powerful man in the House. He’s from Louisiana and he’s a doozy.
Twelve years before he was elected by his colleagues as House Majority Whip, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) spoke at a conference hosted by white supremacist group European-American Unity and Rights Organization.
It was a group founded by David Duke and Duke spoke at the conference, too.
Scalise now says that he would speak to “any group” back then to gain support for this elimination of a “slush fund.” The slush fund he was so upset about was HUD funds, which he called, “an apparent give-away to a selective group based on race.”
Yeah. Housing and Urban Development funds.
Scalise’s office issued a statement —
“He has never been affiliated with the abhorrent group in question. The hate-fueled ignorance and intolerance that group projects is in stark contradiction to what Mr. Scalise believes and practices as a father, a husband, and a devoted Catholic.”
However, he did not leave the conference after hearing other racist speakers nor did the materials shown offend him back then.
And then there’s this little thingy.
Two years after speaking at the conference, Scalise was one of just six state representatives who voted to oppose making Martin Luther King Day a state holiday.
I dunno, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …
Thanks to everybody for the heads up.
The name David Duke sends immediate red flags and warning sirens. He must have thought they were signs from God that he should speak to this group of hatefilled thugs.
1I look at Steve Scalise’s election to House Majority Whip as a victory for civil rights. If he had stayed with his old friend David Duke in that other organization, he’d probably be in charge of the noose by now.
2H e double hockey sticks. The GOP is cluttered with folks with a bad rep. Example: Issa. Scalise simply fell off the same damn tree.
3What? He’s allowed to lie. It’s in the Republican charter. Don’t go by what they say, go by what they do. And even then, they’ll tell you it was taken out of context.
4So, how’s that minority outreach working out?
Some of us in the Democratic Party believe that the Republicans finally have enough rope to hang themselves. Rep. Scalise will have a prominent place in that noose.
5Maybe they can get him an actual whip to go with his
6white hood . . . .
The only whip in Scalise’s future should be a sound whipping by the good ladies of The World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc. His misogynist record is no better than his racist record.

BTW in typical Republican scumbag fashion, his real first name is Joseph. What is it with these mother hating Republicans that they refuse to use the names their good mothers gave them?
7A republican racist rep. from Louisiana? I’m shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you!
8A Louisiana Republican is a racist? Shocking! In other news, water is wet…
9“if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …”
In this case, a damned jacka$$.
10Some in the GOP love to point out that civil rights laws were opposed by southern Democrats back in the 1960s.
Okay, let’s get all of *today’s* racists in Congress and divvy them up by party. I think that’s a little more important than who voted what fifty years ago.
11Polite Kool Marxist – Joseph – sounds kind of Jewish – however I think I speake as a MOTT – we don’t want him 🙂
12Sharon, as a lapsed member of the tribe, am always amused by the number of times Joseph is chosen as a Baptismal name. At a guess in most regions, Joseph Scalise would be expected to be an Italian-American Catholic. Guess that would cause problems for “Steve” with the Klan, Catholic or Jewish Joseph.
I use my mother given name. If you don’t trust me, ask Juanita Jean. Mama had quite the sense of humor.
13Ah, yes, the usual Wing Nut “Run for Cover.” They don’t realize, of course, that the cover is one of those paper umbrellas that accompany your Mai Tai.
14I wonder if this “devoted Catholic” listens to Pope Francis.
15Thus proves the old adage, “not all conservatives are racists, but 99 percent of racists are conservative.”
16What fun! I use my mama-given name too! And when she uses both of em I know I’ve had it! Still!
17LynnN: My beloved late mom-in-law in Louisiana was a member of the Daughters of Isabella (the distaff version of the Knights of Columbus) on paper but her participation was totally self-limited.(She would have adored Pope Francis.) She was not in favor of the racism that washed through that bunch. As the only white woman in town who actually paid her household help decently AND paid into Social Security for them, she was warned by her own family that she would and could someday find a blazing cross on her front lawn. Her response? “Bring it on!” She would simply put statues of Mary, Jesus and whoever else saintly at the foot of the charred stump. And, yup! That cross burning never happened.
18So help me logic through this. If Scalise has “never been affiliated with the abhorrent group in question”, what could he have said to them when he spoke at their convention? That he wasn’t racist, wished they would stop being racist? Oh and vote for me!

Sure, they just don’t like acknowledge the rest of their history. That those same democrats switched to the republic party in droves after LBJ initiated his great society legislation action. Those racist democrats couldn’t abandon the democratic party fast enough.

There is NO logic. Me….. I quit lookin’ long time ago.
21Orange Bunnie’s final comment on Scalese. (at least until the blowback strikes)
“More than a decade ago, Representative Scalise made an error in judgment, and he was right to acknowledge it was wrong and inappropriate. Like many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I know Steve to be a man of high integrity and good character. He has my full confidence as our Whip, and he will continue to do great and important work for all Americans.”

“Like many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle,” classic, Orange Bunnie, just classic ‘both sides do it’ bull hockey. Time to ask him to name just one Democrat playing footsy with David Duke, since the Dixiecrats fled to the GOP/KKK.
