Who Knew? UPDATED!
Yesterday you could have made a lot of money by betting that there were over 100 brains in Texas at any given time. I know lots of people who would have taken that bet and spotted you half a dozen brains. Myself included.
Turns out, there were. But not the living kind. In a headline obviously written by an Aggie —
Come to find out, in the 1980s a Texas mental hospital bequeathed 200 brains taken during autopsies of patients and placed in jars with formaldehyde to the University of Texas. Later, the brain of Charles Whitman, the man who took to the tower at UT with a high powered rifle and killed 16 students, was added to the collection. During his autopsy, it was discovered that the former Marine had an undetected brain tumor.
The brains were put into to storage, moved a couple of times, and have now disappeared. No one knows where they went. However, I think we can rule out Mississippi, the Texas House of Representatives, the Governor’s office, and Fox News.
Thanks to everybody for the heads up.
UPDATE: The brains have been found. They are in San Antonio. Which is where I’d go if I had a brain. UT still has them, but they got moved to the San Antonio campus. Or they hailed a cab.
Thanks to Mary for the heads up.
Oh, now, I think you’re wrong here. Isn’t a jar where most of those people keep their brains?
1There are brains and then there are BRAINS. Those in the jars were of use to science. Those floating in the heads of rwnj’s are of no earthly use, save as paper weights.
2Not in Congress either.
3My husband showed me that article and said “Looks like an April Fool joke” but it wasn’t.
4[Insert Young Frankenstein joke here]
5I think it’s really a Teabagistan conspiracy to remove any evidence that there have ever been ANY brains in Texas….maybe Dan Patrick is the perp?
6Jars for brains in Teabagistan? That’s a waste of formaldehyde, when a small test tube would have been more than spacious.
7Well, shoot honey, and Larry, look no further than the most recent electees to Congress. A little dab of formaldehyde doesn’t bother them a bit.
8daChipster, Young Frankenstein was on HBO this week, so timely this.
9JAKvirginia, a jar is not where these people keep their brains. They keep them where the sun don’t shine.
10I have some cousins who graduated from Texas University. This goes a long way to splaining them.
Maybe we need an investigation to determine just how long Texas University has been mislaying brains.
11“UPDATE: The brains have been found.”
Headline courtesy of The Onion.
12They came by cab from Austin. You can’t hail a cab in San Antonio. Not since the 1950’s or earlier.
13FRANKEN-schteen!
14Who needs a cab! That many brains could get together and do a Star Trek teleportation!
15Well, now the LA Times just updated their article with a statement that, apparently, everyone involved forgot that those brains were destroyed more than 10 years ago. http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-missing-brains-found-in-texas-20141203-story.html
Sheesh, here come the jokes about “How many Texans does it take to figure out where their brains are?”
16100 pickled brains? That sounds like…
…a Boehner family reunion.
17…the US Senate.
…Friday night at the frat.
…a redneck wedding.
…zombie hors d’oeuvres.
…a cryogenic meltdown.
…a Mensa convention.

Kinky Friedman: The Ballad of Charles Whitman
There was a rumor about a tumor
Nestled at the base of his brain
He was sitting up there with his .36 Magnum
Laughing wildly as he bagged em
Who are we to say the boys insane?

18LynnN … you said what I was going to say!!
19Since I’d rather trust the Austin Statesman than either the LA Times or NY Daily News, take a look at what probably happened. It’s not as much fun as zombie hors d’oeuvres, but I’d put my money on the Statesman.
20http://www.statesman.com/news/news/local/ut-says-environmental-workers-disposed-of-brains/njK57/
“Human brains missing from a University of Texas collection were disposed of in “approximately 2002” because their poor condition rendered them unsuitable for research or teaching,”
That line could have just as easily described brains kept in jars in the Governor’s Mansion or in the State Capitol.
21So many jokes, so little time.
22Yes, they was a rumor about a tumor but the last I heard it was never verified. Continuing the words of the Kinkster, “The doctors tore his poor brain down, Not a speck of illness could be found….. There’s a lot of Eagle Scouts around.”
23Too bad you don’t have “upvotes” … this was a great thread. Thank goodness there are smart people somewhere in Texas, I wouldn’t go there if that were that last place on earth there was air, otherwise.
