Well Done Once Again, NRA

While I was on vacation, a guy decided to declare war on the United States starting in Austin.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo described Larry McQuilliams as a “home grown domestic terrorist” who apparently had plans and enough equipment to blow up Austin.  He’s a convicted felon but was able, of course, to get all the weaponry and ammo he needed.

McQuilliams was a rightwing hate monger with complaints straight from Fox News – people are trying to hurt Christians, undocumented immigrants get all the good jobs, you know the usual Fox News headlines.

It was only through luck that no innocent people were killed that night.

However, I just want to note that it did not take riot gear and military weapons to take him down.  It was one cop, one sidearm, and Roy Roger’s horse Trigger.

Law enforcement sources confirmed to KVUE Saturday that a single shot to the heart killed 49-year old Larry Steven McQuilliams. The shot was fired by Austin Police Sergeant Adam Johnson.

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 9.49.27 AMSgt. Johnson is a 15-year veteran on the force. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said he was loading up horses early Friday morning when he heard the gunshots, and while holding two horses with one hand he fired at McQuilliams with his free hand hitting him in the heart.

Friday afternoon, Acevedo praised Johnson’s quick actions saying “For a guy to keep his composure, holding two horses with one hand and taking a one hand shot with the other hand just says a lot about the training and professionalism of our police department.”

No kidding.  He’s a cop on horseback.  He’s with the Mounted Patrol Unit.  The only thing that would have been cooler is if he’d been on horseback when he fired the shot.

I, for one, ain’t messin’ with this guy.

  1. Sometimes……. however seldom, there is that GOOD GUY who has a gun… that takes out the BAD GUY with a gun.

    1
  2. That was a REAL marksman

    2
  3. Excellent. Is that picture of the good guy or the bad guy? The good guy deserves the acknowledgement.

Oops, sorry. That’s the good guy.

    4
  5. What? You mean it didn’t require the Austin PD’s arsenal of military surplus bombproof vehicles and other leftover equipment from Iraq?

Just a well trained police officer? Who would have thought.

One pistol shot through the heart of a guy wearing a tactical vest at 312 feet? I ain’t buying this.

    6
  7. epo, I believe it if he was wearing the vest as we so often see it on TV: way too low (especially on female characters). If you aren’t wearing the vest correctly, it can do more harm than good.

And while they said it was a “shot to the heart,” they didn’t say the shot entered his chest from the front. If it entered through his armpit as he was firing at the police officer, the shot could have missed the vest as well.

  8. when will the media report the connection of the shooter with hate talk radio ???? i am sure McQuilwiams was a great fan of limbaugh, handady, beck, savage et al who constantly hate monger and end up pushing a nut case shooter over the edge.

    Nice shootin’, Tex!

  10. I just keep thinking about holding those horses. Not an easy job in the best of times. They must be very well trained around firearms.
I agree, nice shooting. But epo…maybe he was aiming for the guy’s head.

I always miss all the fun. Well, almost always. One day I was going home and came upon a bunch of cars, mostly police, and people standing around. I stopped and got out. I hollered, “What’s going on?” Somebody yelled, “Get in your car! There’s gunfire going on!” About then, somebody(s) ran out the front door with cops blazing behind. I headed for home, muy pronto. Whew. Turns out that nice lady with the well behaved son? They had a meth lab in the garage and were cranky about giving it up.

Lone Ranger doesn’t shoot to kill. He made that vow in the second/third episode when he got his name from Tonto and also got Silver’s name from Tonto.Of course the first hombre they went after they helped him fall to his death, but he wasn’t shot dead.

ps-the Lone Ranger is on in a half hour. 3:30 Central Time Channel 266 (Angel 2) Dish Network.

  14. Likely that was a body mass shot. He aimed at the biggest chunk of target he could positively identify. Deep breath. Exhale. Calm ….

    14
  15. Have had a lifetime of horses. Gotta say that was real multitasking!

    15
  16. The Mounties always get their man. Oops, that’s Canada. Regardless, good job Sgt. Johnson.

    16
  17. If McQuilliams had been a Muslim this story would have played on the news for days, especially FOX. FOX news is guilty of sedition and inciting violence.

    17
  18. @10/Jan

I was gonna say I feel bad for the horses, which are likely now half-deaf. I used to know a horse trainer who trained horses for Colo Spgs PD, and the training was pretty substantial.

    18
  19. Of course, the usual suspects are immediately stating that McQuilliams was a “lone wolf” and had nothing to do with open carry groups, the tea party, foxnews or republicans in general.
