Been There, Loved That, Literally Bought the Shirt.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s six page dissent on the Texas Voter ID Law includes this —

“The greatest threat to public confidence in elections in this case is the prospect of enforcing a purposefully discriminatory law,” she wrote, “one that likely imposes an unconstitutional poll tax and risks denying the right to vote to hundreds of thousands of eligible voters.”

and —

“In short, any voter confusion or lack of public confidence in Texas’ electoral processes is in this case largely attributable to the state itself.”

Literally, I did buy the shirt.

This Supreme Court needs more women, dammit.  It was the three women who dissented.

Yes, I am wearing that shirt today.

Be social and share!

  1. I’d wear that shirt. She’s a powerhouse for an itty bitty gal.

  2. I bought the shirt, too, JJ. I enjoy wearing it When I go shopping in Scottsdale. My secret wish is to run into Sarah Palin one day when I’m wearing it. I mean, LITERALLY run into Sarah Palin.

    2
  3. CNN Header calls it an “Obstacle Course Voter I.D. Law”.

    Best description I’ve seen.

Thing is: time will come when neither Texas, nor the SCOTUS is run by a bunch of old white guys.

  4. @Gramiam, I assume you’re planning to be driving at the time. Remember the t-shirt with makeup smeared all over it and the slogan, “I ran into Tammy Fay at the mall”?

A letter to the WashPost said that the claim that it’s too late to train poll workers on NOT having to demand photo ID was bullhockey, because they’re trained up to the last minute. (And it’s obvious bullhockey anyway, because how hard is it to say “They don’t need ID”?)

With R B G on the court, hopefully the 5th circuit court of wingnut approval will replace the 9th circuit court as the most over ruled court in ‘murrica.

  6. What a huge scam on American citizens!

  7. Brief snippet from the future..

Election Worker: Let me see your identification.
RBG: [with a small wave of her hand] You don’t need to see his identification.
Election Worker: We don’t need to see his identification.
    RBG: He can vote.
    Election Worker: You can vote.
    RBG: Move along.
Election Worker: Move along… move along.

  8. I know that there have been some calling for RBG to step down while Obama is still in office so that a Dem president can name her replacement. But I hope she sticks around for soem time to come. She has really come into her own these past few years and is a force to be reckoned with. She’s tiny, but she is fierce! Even when I disagree with her opinion, I find it considered and well reasoned. Unlike most of her colleagues.

    Love her.

(If the Senate changes sides, there is little change Obama could appoint a liberal justice to replace her anyway, even if he is so inclined. He is far from progressive to my way of thinking. And Breyer would be the ranking liberal justice who would dole out dissents to the others, and he is to milquetoast for me. I love RBG’s fire. )

  9. Awright already! Where can I get that shirt?

Me too: Where’d you get the shirt?
And if you vote over at Randall’s at Slaughter and Brodie, they have demanded photo IDs for years. I walked up and down the line a couple years ago and said you don’t have to have a photo ID to vote but they had to. And the guys running the polls there told people they could not use any electronic device to take pictures or find information during voting. Is that true that you can’t or is that a Randall’s guys thing?

  11. I’ve worked elections for over thirty years and go to the training every time. ( I could give the training now, I think). Once you walk into the polling place (or the area for voting if it’s a grocery store, etc) you must turn off your cell phone or anything else similar. I think one reason is so the incoming call won’t bother people, but mainly it’s so you can’t call someone and say “hey- who was I supposed to vote for in the senate race?” That’s a reasonable rule. You can take in written notes, a list, even pre-printed info from your union, neighborhood assn or anyone else, as long as you aren’t showing it to anyone else.
If you don’t know who you’re going to vote for, do your homework and THEN go to the polls.

  12. I’m working at the polls this year in Arizona and our training takes place on October 30 for the November Election, at least for those of us who need to learn to use the new tablets they use now. It reminds me of going to BINGO after they did away with the bingo papers and daubers and loaded the specials and games on a computer tablet.

  13. About that shirt: Someone I know linked to the site on Facebook (where I’m friends with JJ) and they were looking for at least 15 (!) people to order one so they could print them up. I seem to remember that I was #193 before I also shared the site on FB. I believe this was a one-off, so don’t know where anybody else could get another one. I went to a pig roast in Northern Virginia at the end of July and one of the other people there was wearing her copy that had just arrived in the mail.

Great minds think alike, is all I’m sayin’.

Google Notorious RBG shirts. There appears to be several outlets for these and other shirts. Cafepress is one.

    14
  15. Cafepress rocks. I’m not surprised they carry the shirt.
