Texas Republican Congressman Spends $33,000 on Hams and Chocolates And Still Can’t Get Laid
Okay, I admit the headline is a tad unfair. Texas Congressman Ralph Hall is 90 years old. He’s got grandchildren who are older than dirt. We have to carbon date him to figure out how many candles to put on his birthday cake every year. The man owes Noah a dollar.
He’s on the House Science and Technology Committee. They didn’t have science when he was growing up. He still marvels at that new-fangled transistor radio.
Texas Rep. Ralph Hall, the oldest serving member of Congress, spent more than $33,000 in campaign funds on orders from Honey Baked Foods and Godiva Chocolatier, campaign filings show.
Federal Election Commission records show Hall’s campaign spent a total of more than $14,000 at the Honey Baked Foods company around the holidays in 2012 and 2013. The campaign spent an additional $19,000 at Godiva in December 2013.
H’s going to be in a run off with a tea party republican on May 27th. After his opponent announced he was going to run against Hall, Hall sent him a ham. Seriously. There’s pictures and everything.
Some people just won’t stay bought. The guy still filed to run against him.
Ya know, I am not too upset about tho. What else has the guy got to spend his campaign funds on? It ain’t like he can see a yard sign or answer a robo call.
I kinda hope he wins again. We need the hams.
Thanks to Fred Farklestone for the heads up.
I like hams and chocolates. How could we get on his mailing list?
1You know he’s kinda cute for an old guy. But WWII vet? WORLD WAR TWO? I was born toward the end of World War II. He sure musta given away a LOT of hams and chocolates.
2He takes ‘bringing home the pork’ literally. I’m with you Marge Wood, I like ham and chocolate also.
3If he’s a Republican on the House Science and Technology Committee, I know one thing about him: he knows nothing about science and technology. I might go so far as to say that his knowledge of science and technology must be into negative triple digits, i.e. he knows a trainload of crap that isn’t so. Otherwise he wouldn’t be put on that committee by the GOP.
4He owned the mineral rights to the lot my house was on. He never sent us any goodies.
I expect he owned 1/2 the land around Lake Ray Hubbard. He was as old as Methuselah when I lived there 20 years ago. He and his sons ran the county.
I expect the good conservative folk of Rockwall think it’s time for him to move on. Many E Systems employees and sub contractors live in his district. You can’t get any more Tea Party than Ralph Hall.
5Ham and chocolates beats raffling off assault rifles to gain votes. Congressman Hall may be 90, but shows better sense than those wacko birds in the Tea Party, or his old counter part in the Senate, the senile senator from AZ.
House Science and Technology Committee headed by Lamar Smith, TX-21st, so Congressman Hall might be the sanest on the committee.
6He obviously took pork barrel legislation literately.
7Should have been “literally”. excuse moi
8His pork barrel is full of truffles.
9Corinne Sabo and he can account for each and every slice and morsel. Maybe he should teach accounting to his Tea Party associates. The man keeps track of income and expenditures.
Steve Stockyard’s errors of ‘omission’? To be fair to Steve, there are others equally negligent. They are called cheats. When the books don’t balance, someone has been trying to hide something. Sort of like Rummy and his taxes.
Can’t endorse Congressman Hall’s positions on the issues, but have to give him props for possibly not being a crook like most GOP TX politicians.
10This gave me the best laugh I’ve had all day:
Texas Congressman Ralph Hall is 90 years old. He’s got grandchildren who are older than dirt. We have to carbon date him to figure out how many candles to put on his birthday cake every year. The man owes Noah a dollar.
JJ, you are such a wit and you give good laugh!!
11Sam Rayburn represented that district for many years. It’s scary how some things can change.
12The last time I voted in Northeast Texas, I wrote in the name of my son’s best rodeo buddy in the space against Ralph Hall. S’pose that’s why I didn’t get a ham? It was the only opportunity for a write-in vote in the 2012 election.
13I love chocolate, but it has to be dark (preferably RAW), fair trade, and organic. I’m vegan, so no ham (not even the fake stuff made out of soy) for me. I’m sure I know more about science and technology than Congressman Hall does, but I’m not a politician, and if I were, I wouldn’t be a Republican one.
14Usually it is the other way around, hams spend money on congressmen.
15MaryK, I understand the write in vote but folks who work the polls where there are write ins have a ton of extra work to do. I guess it’s worth it. Now that I think of it, is it possible to write in a vote on a machine?
16In the 90+ generation of politicians, maybe the last near decent one, Bob Dole gets it right.
“Former GOP Sen. Bob Dole: Paul, Rubio, Cruz lack experience; Cruz “way out there.”

Ouch, kiddies. A respected and retired former Senate statesman has your number. He remembers working, compromising and doing what he his constituents voted for him to do.
Read the polls, Tea Party. America hates your Koch addiction.
Read the numbers. We want health care, jobs, fair wages, immigration reform, health care choices for women, universal education for all, progressive taxation, and an end to the oligarchical wars for the spoil/oil industry.
17Marge Wood, it is too easy to create an electronic ballot that allows for write-in candidates and, more importantly can create a reliable paper trail in contested elections.
But until that happens, we need to protect early voting, absentee voting for our military, disabled and seniors, and for the working people. No one should be required to wait hours in line to vote.
The work Juanita Jean and The World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc. have done to increase voter registration and participation is a 50 state and voting territories model.
2014 is ours! We have months to get out the vote.
18Godiva chocolates? Is that the official chocolate of the GOP? Hell, old Strom Thurmond sent a box of them to one of the lawyer gals working the epic fail Clinton impeachment trial. Who knows? Mebbe old Ralph (a tad younger then) was the one who ran out and got that damn box so Strom could feel young again. Just winkin’ at the purty lady didn’t do the trick.
19Ralph (actually a friend of my late father) should be sending Greenberg turkeys. Isn’t Greenville in his district?
20Those in my family who know him best (longtime Rockwall residents) think it’s time for him to retire. Gotta give him some credit for being like the Energized bunny, though.
