Holy Crap: Theatrical Appreciation Edition
After all, it is Kentucky.
Kentucky Pastor Jeff Fugate said this week that his assistant pastor, Joseph Pickens, felt hurt by Internet comments from people who did not appreciate him wearing blackface for a church skit.
It appears that the assistant pastor was trying to be “cool” for the kids and wore blackface to be Mr. T in a skit.
Oh dear Lord. Then Pastor Fugate grants a teevee interview and says he didn’t mean to be racist and that they have “lot of black folks” in their church and none of them complained.
Ya know, I somehow doubt there at “lots” of black people at the “Clay Mills Road Baptist Church 2014 National Young Fundamentalist Conference.” And if there are, they more than likely were terrified.
And, as happens in all these cases, the right-winger becomes the victim and there is a non-apology …
Fugate said that the boxing skit was supposed to be “inspiring” and humorous to teens. Instead, Internet commenters accused Pickens of making Kentucky look bad.
“He is so hurt,” Fugate said. “I’m not a racist, and I sure am sorry if I’ve offended you or anybody.”
Yeah, he’s so hurt that he can’t even walk out here in blackface and do a tap dance.
Thanks to Karl for the heads up.
It’s 1984, folks. unnecessary war is “keeping us safe”. Would-be persecutors stopped are being persecuted because they were stopped (Arizona, etc.). Poor George Zimmerman was the actual victim, not the 17 yr old he chased and shot dead.
1Just how is it possible to make Kentucky “look bad”? Worse maybe but Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell already take care of the looking bad part.
2The days of casting only black performers in certain roles on stage are long gone. Consider the roles that Audra McDonald has played recently — most recently the Mother Superior in NBC’s live production of The Sound of Music. Did anyone try to make her look any different than she already is? The same applies to white actors in roles traditionally played by blacks — white actors play the part of The Emperor Jones without resorting to black face paint.
The question is not whether the man is racist but whether he’s an ignorant yahoo.
3From an historical perspective, I don’t believe the white folks heard a lot of complaining from the black folks back in the day when crosses were burned, and one of them types of folks was regularly lynched by the other type without a trial. If you’re really not sure, maybe you can ask?
4True, Don A in Pennsyltucky. While his actions may not have been deliberately racist, he was an ignorant yahoo in need of having his gohmert racism explained to him.
5Bill Maher can be a bit of a jerk at times, especially toward women. (Actually think he was cred of that by none other than Ann Coulter. Go figure.) But this piece on race was perfect:
“And it’s true, he’s spent his entire life shuffling from one low-paying government job to another. Well, except those years he spent in prison. Typical! And between you and me, he’s not very articulate. Oh, he may have some street smarts, but he’s not what you call an educated man. He freely admits he’s ignorant about the economy. And apparently the only thing his white running mate knows how to do is crank out one baby after another. And now of course, her teenage daughter is pregnant out of wedlock. Because she learns it at home! But that doesn’t mean we should assume all white people are like that, just because so many of them are. I believe there is hope. I believe even the stoopiest…stupidest, greediest, laziest whites can break the cycle of dependence like this November when we finally move George Bush out of public housing.”

6Imagine their outrage if they ever saw an accurate portrayal of Jesus in a movie. You know, the non-Aryan version?
These people know exactly what they did. They just don’t care.
Good Grief.
7Check your calendar, Pastor Fugate. The year is 2014. 21st century, and all that. Time for you and your congregation to move toward the present day—use your knuckles if you have to, but walking in an upright position is more comfortable, and you’ll get here quicker.
8I’m betting he thinks he is righteous about this cuz he wasn’t eating watermelon at any time during the skit. What a jackwagon!!!!
9Wait, wait, WAIT!
Yeah, racist, sure, sure. Insensitive: yadda, yadda, yadda. But we are missing the bigger picture here.
Any “teenager” today will have been born no later than March 14, 1994 and achieved cultural awareness sometime in the 21st century…
…and this guy is using a MR T skit to reach them?
I pity the Fugate!
10DADGUMMIT: I meant no earlier than 1994, of course.
11Now there’s a fine role model for the teens to emulate: an idiot who doesn’t get it.
12The sane, non-racist part of Kentucky and there are a heaping big bunch of us, apologize for letting this fool out.
13As the parent of a teen, I can tell you that it would be equally effective for the good pastor to dress in drag and go as Fanny Brice — that would have exactly the same relevance to his audience.
14When will it end?
