VAN DE PUTTE ANNOUNCES FOR LITE GUV
Shows in first speech as a Lt Gov candidate that she’s ready to be the attack dog
In a wide-ranging speech in which she lashed out directly at the Republicans running for Lite Guv, Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, on Saturday began making the case that she should preside over the Texas Senate come 2015. Brought onstage by her daughter in a packed gymnasium at San Antonio College, Van de Putte told the crowd repeatedly that she was running because “Mama aint’ happy.” And she said, “If your family is anything like my family – when Mamma’s not happy, ain’t nobody happy.”
This Mama is happy.
Now that’s some good news for Texans!
1I remember reading years ago that the Lieutenant Governor position in Texas actually held more power than Governor (as I recall the reason given was that they once had a Governor so bad that even Texas revolted).
Is that the case?
2She’s got the perfect campaign slogan whose truth is undeniable. Even the ultra-patriarchal recognize it.
3I can’t wait to cast my votes for Wendy & Leticia & help turn Texas Blue!
Don’t Mess With Texas Women or their foreign state fans!
4My friend and state senator will make a great Lt. Governor, one we can be proud of!
5I hadn’t heard of either Van de Putte or Wendy Davis before the recent abortion bill controversy, but I was extremely impressed with how both women handled themselves.
After so many years of lousy Texas politicians whose damage and destruction affects the entire country, it would be wonderful to have these two women come in and clean up the place!
6This is wonderful news. She’s not my State Senator, but I’ve been watching and reading about her for years and believe she is great and would be a huge improvement over what we have now.
7Sewer sludge would be an improvement over what Texas has now. You need sensible female,Libs to start to undo the damage white males have heaped on your state.
8Wow! Texas has a “twofer”. How awesome is THAT! My granddaughters are voting in their first election. They are twins and went down to register on their 18th birthday. They also donned orange t-shirts and participated in the rally for Wendy Davis and had their pictures taken with Cecile Richards. Grandma is so proud!
9I live in New York City, so I can’t vote for Wendy and Leticia, but I hope I can support them in other ways. I watched Leticia’s announcement this morning on the livestream. If you missed it, definitely find a video of it and watch the whole speech. She’s a very good speaker — smart, tough and funny. She and Wendy make a helluva team!
10I just got back a few minutes ago from phone banking for Wendy. She finally got there and we all got to listen to her. She’s always great. Then much to our surprise, here came Leticia Van de Putte! I think Van de Putte just oozes power, calmness and wisdom. Wendy is bound to have more energy with Van de Putte alongside. I did get to shake her hand. There was a huge crowd there, phone banking and doing data entry. It was a good way to spend a cold, drizzly afternoon.
11I absolutely love my Wendy riding a dragon T-shirt. When do I get one with Leticia riding, say, an asteroid cuz she’s is also out of this world!
12Yes!!! If I’m not mistaken she was coming back from her own Father’s funeral when she returned to the capital and had to make that statement. Sad.
I sure hope someone sets up some ActBlue accounts soon so we Progressives from foreign states can get into the contributing game. Texas needs Wendy and Leticia to go to work and clean up the muck the Repubs have made in their state!
JJ do YOU have the ability to set up an ActBlue acct? I just bet a LOT of your followers would look for that. I checked last night and again just now, but not getting any matches yet.
13BTW, they have made it easy for me to contribute to Wendy as well.
14LynnN, as I recall from my college government course several decades back, you are correct. HOWEVER, that power is granted by the Senate rules and those rules can be changed by the senators.
15Kath the Scrappy, I don’t have one but I occasionally ask the customers to donate to some special project I’m working on, usually in conjunction with Silver Democrats or my buddy Glen Maxey, the table dancer. We raised the money for the entire project right here and more money came in the mail to Glen. New are saving it for the next project.
So, hold a few dollars back and I’ll let you know when something comes up that is worthwhile, I can help oversee how the money is spent, and the money goes to the field operation not some shockingly overpaid consultant.
16@Kathy the Scrappy and JJ: Go to Leticia’s website:
http://www.leticiavandeputte.com/
The “Contribute” button leads directly to this Act Blue account:
https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/entity/18122?refcode=directory
17Thanks JJ, I typically do donate when you suggest. With Actblue I don’t have to keep reentering all my CC info etc, it’s all set up.
But I see your point, about having someone overseeing where the money goes in the operation. So my wallet is tucked back in the fannypack.
18Thanks too Ms. J! That Actblue Contribute button worked slick as a whistle! I will save some money for future projects, but I DO like getting in on the ground floor for exciting campaigns (like I did for Wendy). Get the momentum going.
Just last month I got my first SS check, so I figure I can splurge a tad.
19This combination is what Texas needs to join the 21st Century and leap ahead of the rest of the South. They will act like the Civil war is over and as part of the United States that won, Texas will lead the way back from the cesspool of tea-party ignorance.
If they win is it the first time both top jobs in a state were held by competent women?
Awwwwwww Riiiiiiiiiiiiight!!!!!!!!!!
20@Kath the Scrappy #19 – You’re very welcome! I plan to contribute to Wendy and Leticia’s campaign when I get a few extra bob to do it. And congratulations on receiving your first SS check! We Dems better make damn sure that your benefits will never get slashed by Repubs!
@OleScout #20 – According to this HuffPo article from yesterday, this is the first time Texas will have an all-female team (competent or otherwise) at the head of a major party ticket:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/23/leticia-van-de-putte-lt-governor_n_4329375.html
The article says: “It is the first time in Texas history that women will lead a major party’s ticket for the state’s top offices, and only the fourth time in national history.”
If anyone knows who the other all-woman teams were in “national history”, please let us know. I’d love to know who the other women were who ran for Gov/Lt. Gov and in what states they ran.
21I feel the pot coming to a boil.
22The thought of My Texas turning Blue keeps me warm on this cold day….
23The “good ol’ boys” must be shaking in their chaps to be facing a pair of awesome “hooter toters”. And they thought that Ann Richards was scary. She and Molly Ivins must be sitting on a cloud, laughing their big blue butts off.
24Here’s the YouTube link to Leticia’s announcement yesterday:

This clip comes in at roughly the point where Leticia started her speech. I watched the whole event live yesterday morning on the San Antonio Nowcast webstream. The beginning of the entire 46 min. video shows some speeches by Leticia’s colleagues and a very colorful Mariachi band in which some of Leticia’s relatives play. But if you just want to hear the basic speech by LVP, hit that link above. It starts with her daughter introducing her. It’s an awesome speech and I look forward to hearing many more from this powerhouse!
