Post Racial America

August 13, 2013 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Spring Branch is a part of Houston, a city of diversity that was named “The Coolest City in America” by Forbes Magazine.  And by cool, they didn’t mean the temperature, they meant “very good; fashionable.”

Yesterday, not so much.

Nobody claims to have put it up.  It appeared magically out of the clear blue when a mosque was built across the street.

I am going to be generous and suggest that they couldn’t spell, “Parking for Customers Only.”

Barbara Jo Thigpen, a hairdresser friend of mine at Get Your Locks Off Salon in Spring Branch, says Muslims can park in her lot but they will expected to not spit tobacco on the cement or drag their spurs on the sidewalk, just like everybody else.

Thanks to Bernard for the heads up.

Be social and share!

If nobody claims to have put it up, then nobody should go take it down.

  2. Evidently since management thinks nobody put it up it is now an SEP-Someone Else’s Problem.

  3. Dumber than a bunch of prehistoric rocks. Around here there are situations where large congregations take advantage of any space they can see, public or private. However, when signs are posted they simply say Parking for Customers of Mall Only; All Others Will Be Towed. They don’t get snarky about some religion or whatever. And church parking lots also have signs about just who can park where.

  4. John in Lafayette says:

    Just a note on semantics……..

Bigotry toward Muslims is religious, not racial, bigotry. Muslims are to be found among all races of the world.

So we may very well still be a post-racial America. It’s quite possible the good folks in Spring Branch have moved beyond racial prejudice to a more fashionable form of bigotry.

Reminds me of the story about the great baseball player Tony Gwynn, who, when he became a free agent, could have gone to any team in the country, made a lot more money, and played for a winner. Instead, he chose to stay and play for his hometown San Diego Padres, who were perennial losers.

When a reporter asked him why, Gwynn responded, “I’m a Padre. G-d help me, I’m a Padre.”

    And I’m an American.

  5. Wow, the folks at Westview Shopping Center have automotive Muslimdar! I wonder how they do that? Honestly, I can’t tell a Muslim car from a Catholic car from an atheist car from a Baptist car.

  6. Marge Wood says:

How are they gonna find out who’s Muslim in their parking lot? My Muslim friends’ cars have no bumper stickers on them.

  7. Aunt Snow says:

How do they determine Muslim cars? From the direction they’re facing?

  8. I’m just sitting here, shaking my head, rolling my eyes, and biting my tongue. All out of deference to Momma.

What the H**l is wrong with people that they do stupid crap like that?

  9. Tilda Favel says:

Let’s all keep in mind that whoever placed that sign there has not had the benefit of socialization adequate to consider such details. Perhaps the civic-minded person who is responsible for the sign is sitting in the bushes waiting for women in hijab to alight so he/she can leap out and nab them for parking in a “no Muslim parking zone”.

The thought processes here are murky, at best.

  10. Lorraine in Spring says:

I’m with Miemaw. There really are no words at this point. Just some guttural sounds, arm waving & pacing in circles around here.

I think SomedayGirl has the perfect solution and since I’m a nobody, I volunteer. I just need a ride.

  11. SteveTheReturned says:

Yeah, that’s a really funny prank—if you consider Adolph Hitler and Heinrich Himmler to be big-time pranksters.

    Absolutely shameful.

    11
  12. So they’re blocking out all cars wearing hijabs?

    12
  13. I want to know how they will identify Muslim cars, as opposed to Christian or Jewish or Atheist cars. Are they thinking that those cars are supposed to be marked by law (you know, like the yellow star of the Nazis)? Do these people ever really think?

    13
  14. Lynn N, that was my thought– they’re towing any cars in burkhas. I’m picturing a car completely draped in black fabric except a little mesh hole in the front to look out of.

Actually I think certain Muslim men would benefit from being able to travel only in that kind of car.

  15. Aggieland liz says:

In byootifull Bri-ine-CollegeStation all the cathlick cars n trucks but mine have 1) bumper stickers advertising Red-C radio, the local cathlick station, or 2) that little silhouette of the manger with “keep Christ in Christmas” on it. A very few have Obama stickers on them, and an approx equal number have Romney-Ri-ine stickers on them.

    Mines nekkid!!

    15
  16. Meanwhile, the stand set-up just next to the sign with fish emblems and Star of David emblems for the car is making a killing [evil grin].

  17. Uncle Dave says:

According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, by 2030, 1.7% of US citizens, more than six million, will be Muslim, putting them on par with the Jewish and Episcopalian populations, today. So, which political party do you suppose those new citizens will find more accepting?

  18. Corinne Sabo says:

I have a Ford but haven’t asked it about any religious affiliation.

  19. A day late for me, but I just remembered where I heard of Spring Branch before. Wasn’t this the town who tried to fortress itself against what they claimed was hordes of illegal immigrants? If this is the same town, then its no surprise they did what they did with that damn sign.

    19
  20. Hateful like Westboro, Juanita Jean.

Any bets on them towing the cars of Hindus because they can’t tell the difference?
