Fun With Guns, Houston Edition

May 02, 2013 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

This afternoon, a man walked into the Houston airport and fired some shots into the air with an AR15.

For those of you who think having an armed guard makes you safer, an air marshall fired at the guy. And missed.

The guy then pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the head.

Thank God that no one else was hurt.

  1. Just had to post this. Says it all

    People are crazy.

  2. Rubymay says:

I’m not going to suggest here that maybe the guy had some mental issues and shouldn’t have owned a gun (Lord knows I’m not a psychiatrist), but I’ve heard that the desire to commit suicide is sometimes an indicator of instability. Nah, we don’t need all them silly regulations the librals keep yammering about.

    2
  3. Love that we have law enforcement officials in crowded airports who can’t hit what they’re aiming at. Amazing no one else was hit by the stray round(s).

But I’m sure the NRA or someone else will decide that if only every other person in the airport had been armed, that would’ve improved the situation….

    3
  4. Wonder if this will make TSA move the entrance to their security theater to the sidewalk in front of the terminal.

  5. Brianm0122 says:

Well, maybe the NRA has a point.

If everyone on a plane was armed, what hijacker, in his right mind would get on a plane? I mean would anyone?

    There, airline safety problem solved.

    5
  6. Isn’t the NRA having its national meeting here?

    6
  7. addicted says:

So, here’s my question. If God Forbid he had actually shot someone, would he be a terrorist (coz, you know, violent acts in an airport) or would he be a criminal (it’s a gun, so he can’t be a terrorist)?

Or would it just depend on his religion?

    7
  8. addicted says:

“Love that we have law enforcement officials in crowded airports who can’t hit what they’re aiming at.”

Actually, this is exactly why the LaPierre “Good guy to shoot a bad guy” argument is pathetic. It is really hard to shoot someone that easily while you are also trying to protect yourself. On the other hand, the mass-shooter can easily inflict a lot of damage.

This asymmetry is because the mass-shooter has no particular target, and achieves his (has there ever been a her?) goal by spraying bullets around. The “good guy” however, has to (a) get cover (b) recognize the killer (c) ensure there is no one else (d) make sure they don’t shoot anyone else (e) aim and try and hit in a chaotic situation.

    8
  9. BarbinDC says:

Sounds like a “suicide by police” attempt.

    9
  10. addicted: Answer C, his religion, of course.

And yes, you’re exactly right about why LaPierre is exactly wrong.

    10
  11. Yes, there have been female “mass shooters.” In this country they are rare. Using the criterion that four or more people must have died in a single spree, Mother Jones says that there has only been one female fitting this description, in 2006. [http://theweek.com/article/index/237938/why-are-there-so-few-female-mass-murderers references the article which is found here http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map%5D I make a supposition that means females tend to be much more personal about their homicides.

“Suicide by cop” is just a really nasty thing to do to a law enforcement agent. Hard on their psyche and there’s loads of paperwork [sorry; morbid humor from friends in the biz]. Took it into his own hands when the law missed.

    11
  12. So the good guy with the gun fired and missed, thus endangering everyone around who might have been struck by that bullet. Fortunately there was a bad buy with a gun who valiantly defended the public from the bad guy with a gun.

    12
  13. Excellent analysis, LynnN.

  14. Sam in Kyle says:

Where was Greg Abbott with that big a$$ gun he always sports on the obnoxious Facebook posts?

    14
  15. scottybeamer says:

…and then there is the 5 year old boy who shot and killed his 2 year old sister , with a rifle he got for his birthday…….in Kentucky……….there is no end to this madness. When children get guns for their birthdays, you know we are in big trouble!

    15
  16. Aggieland liz says:

Hey addicted, ask Louie G about the terrorists-they’re all BROWN! Or at least brownish, and have foreign names, gosh!

    16
  17. Thank God the annual NRA meet-up and gun swap didn’t start a bit earlier. Imagine what would have happened if they had been unloading off those planes while this was going down. Could have been dreadful!

    17
  18. If you drop the “mass murder” criterion to three killed and seven wounded in a few minutes, there was a woman at Springfield Mall in Delaware County PA in October 1985. She was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic who was off her meds and said she did it because her family made her nervous. She’d made the KMart clerks so nervous that they wouldn’t sell her a rifle, but she bought one at some other store. She was stopped by an unarmed man (who didn’t realize that she was firing real bullets).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Seegrist

Didn’t realize until reading this that she killed a two-year-old right outside a restaurant where my mother and I used to go….

    18
  19. How pathetic is a guy when he can’t even commit suicide by cop, and ends up having to do it himself, anyway?

    19
  20. Umptydump says:

Hey, scottybeamer, those little Crickett rifles are available in black or pink stocks – really cute, dontcha know! Here’s a lovable photo gallery!

    http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/05/crickett-rifle-marketing-kids

For some strange reason, links to the manufacturer’s web page for this product don’t seem to be working right now. I wonder why …

    http://www.keystonesportingarmsllc.com

If you MUST have a Crickett for yourselves, Boys and Girls, you can check out this website! As one reviewer said, it’s “Freakin Sweet!”

However, when your youngster is old enough for Cub Scouts or Brownies or Little League, he or she might be ready for the Chipmunk, which can be purchased in all kinds of nifty colors, even a pink laminate to complement the bright color of the victim’s blood. At this time the manufacturer still has the Chipmunk web page online.

  21. Mary in San Antonio says:

Over the years as I had to use either of the Houston airports, I don’t think I was ever desperate enough to want to shoot myself or others. And that’s even counting the time I missed my flight by 5 minutes.

    21
  22. The afternoon news carried this story. On Channel 2 their segue into the next story, one about NRA members arriving at the airport to attend the national convention here, was “of course the two stories are completely unrelated.” But of course they are related. Those people attending the NRA convention are fighting, with their dollars and their threats, for the rights of people like the shooter to have and to carry weapons like an AR15 into any place they like.

    22
  23. I can see the NRA members walking into the hotels, putting their luggage on the counter and opening it like Antonio Banderas in “Desperado”, displaying enough weapons to outfit a small Central American insurrection, all of them grumbling about not having access to their guns while flying or in the airport.

Fort Hood won’t have as many guns as the Hyatt will have during this bang-fest.

    23
  24. Miemaw says:

First, I don’t, thankfully watch local news. If I had seen this story, I’d be a bigger wreck than I already am.

My son was to meet my daughter-in-law, and her friend, who were returning from a trip to London yesterday. ETA on their flight home was about 3:00 p.m. Knowing my son, he would have been a little early. Hopefully all that was over before any of them arrived.

I think we have to decide if the people are going to run their government, or if we are going to hand it over to the NRA. If we are not going to hand it over to the NRA, we are going to have to stop voting for the pols who take their bribes. That will mean Republicans and Democrats alike.
How many more little kids’ lives have to be lost, and ruined, before we say “Enough”.

The guy, who finally took his own life, got into a major big city airport terminal with an automatic rifle.
Something is drastically wrong with that scenario.

    Good Lawd Y’all.

    24
  25. Sam in Kyle says:

I understand the average IQ in Houston has shown a rapid decline as NRA members ooze into the city. Reportedly there has been a run on white sheets also.

    25
  26. Maggie says:

So the Air Marshal pulled out his weapon, fired and missed? Where was he keeping said weapon? In the bottom of his purse? H E double hockey sticks, folks. If I had to go around armed that is where my weapon would be, down there in the bottom surrounded by packages of hosiery and a can of coffee and a whole bunch of other stuff. Obviously the shooter was hoping for suicide by stranger but it just wasn’t his day! He had to finally to the deed himself! Dang sad, all the way around!

    26
  27. Miemaw says:

Now that I know my family is all o.k.

All I can say is this:

Was this a great “Welcome to Houston, NRA” or what?

    27
  28. I watch way too much local news. I just saw a spokesperson for the NRA convention bragging, bragging I tell you, that celebrities like Sarah Palin, Rick Perry and Glenn Beck will be there. OMG, these really aren’t my kind of people.

    28
  29. elaine says:

They aren’t even their kinda people…just too stoopid to know that. Lawd, what hath loud-mouths wrought? They don’t even stop to see that their children are killing each other.
