Sen. Ted Cruz says some of the attacks on fellow Republican Sen. Marco Rubio by Democrats are motivated by race. Cruz said today the fact that Rubio is a Republican Latino poses a threat to political adversaries. “I think Democrats and the media are afraid of Marco Rubio because he is a smart, intelligent, conservative Hispanic. And they are looking for any excuse they can to attack him, because that threatens them,” Cruz told reporters during a tour of a Texas gun manufacturing plant …
Okay, so does make all the GOP attacks on Obama racist, too? ‘Cuz, I’ll give you that deal. I mean, y’all are way ahead of us in the attack department.
We Democrats attacked John McCain because he’s …. secretly some other color?
Lemme ask you something, Cruz. Republicans trot out minorities to do the response to the State of the Union and those minorities fall on their faces. That wouldn’t be on purpose, now would it?

1Cruz has turned out to be quite an idiot, if anyone saw his McCarthy impersonation when he was smearing Chuck Hagel over some money that Hagel is supposed to have gotten from ‘Friends of Hamas’ please read the Huffington Post today, there is no such organization and apparently it was started by a right wing blogger who now says it was a joke.

Well, I feel a little better after reading the NY Times article referenced by granny97 in the “humorectomy” story.
3Cruz is described as “rigid” and “polarizing” with an “all-or-nothing” approach, “arrogant, sour and self-serving,” and when questioning Hagel during the nominee’s confirmation hearing, “surprisingly audaciously contemptuous” [in] tone.
BTW the arrogant sour and self-serving adjectives came from people who worked with him on Dubya’s campaign; in other words from people you’d expect to be on Cruz’s side.
Since I was bad-mouthing Cruz anyway, I looked up the answer to a question I’d seen somewhere else:

Well lo and behold: Cruz was not born in the United States, his father was not (then) an American citizen, BUT:
Cruz’ mother was an American citizen.
Wonder what the “birthright” crews will have to say about this scenario?
Is it too soon to start a recall campaign? Or is there some rule that they have to be in Washington at least long enough to be on their second roll of toilet paper in their Senate office restrooms? Though come to think of it, Cruz is such an a$$wipe himself, he could actually be on his 3rd or 4th roll by now. (Why do these people bring out the scatological sarcasm in me? I need to work on that…..)
5I taking bets now. Cruz will resign his Senate set before the end of his tour of duty. Either that or he will be kicked out. Its happened before. See Huey Long. And Cruz just doesn’t have even half the whimsey old Huey did.

9I’ve heard that both Princeton and Yale have started using the fact Ted Cruz attended Harvard as a recruiting point alluding to how much better they are compared to Harvard. I must admit, Harvard’s standards must have dropped quite a bit since they had Bill Gates, Al Gore, and Tommy Lee Jones matriculating.

16Every time anyone on MSNBC mentions The Canadian, they have to throw in how “brilliant” he is before they complain about the studpid things he just keeps doing. Maybe Cruz is brilliant. Maybe this whole defense of Rubio and accusations of Democratic racism toward Rubio is meant to deflect all the criticism coming his own way. I mean, if he complained he, himself, were a victim of librul racism, then he would sound like a whiner. Instead he is trying to be a statesman, magnanimous in his defense of a fellow Hispanic.

I hate to break the news, scary thought that it is, but Cruz can run for president. His mother was born in Delaware, moved to Houston where she graduated from Rice University. Since she was born in the United States, she is a citizen. Because she spent most of her life before Ted Cruz was born in the U.S., he was a U.S. citizen at birth.

21Sorry, #miemaw, but since Cruz’ mother was an American citizen he has been an American citizen since his birth, wherever that occurred.
22Now whether citizenship conferred in such a manner (birth to an American citizen, period) meets the “natural born” phrase of the US Constitution, Article II, Section 1 has never been determined.
Variations of the fact pattern (only one parent a citizen, birth in a foreign country) have occurred in five Presidential elections but no one has successfully challenged the ability of a candidate to run for POTUS.
Anyone else whose brain squirrels away little tidbits know who the candidates with “natural born” issues were?
Or what party they belonged to?
OK, #MCPO has one down and I was not including President Obama (6th candidate with potential issue but same campaign as Se. McCain).

Not certain MCPO Ret, McCain was a special case because of the whole Panama Canal Zone situation. And there is plenty of confusion about Little Teddy’s parents’ citizenship status. The thing is, a non-native, or immigrant cannot serve as President or Vice President of these United States. A first generation citizen can. If Ted Cruz has been defined as a citizen of the U.S. since his birth he is eligible. If his citizenship was granted (regularization, naturalization, etc) he is ineligible. I await events; should be fun.

That’s funny because a few years back the Harris County DA’s office got caught using “Canadian” as a code for African American in office memos and e-mail, as in, “how many Canadians did you get on your jury? Five? That’s rough, ’cause you know Canadians will never vote to convict their guy.”
I don’t know where to go with that, but I thought it worth a gratuitous mention.

26#Aggieland, you are probably right because although John McCain was born in Panama–before creation of the Panama Canal Zone and NOT in a military hospital or on a military base and you will sometimes hear–when the US scooped up Zone it granted retroactive citizenship to Americans who had been there. So that’s “granted” and still a ??? but a good example of how many legal issues can be contained in the phrase “natural born.”
27So as not to hijack this thread any farther, the remaining candidates for POTUS whose “natural born” status was less than clear cut were:
Lowell Weiker – born in Paris to American citizens
George Romney – born in Mexico to American citizens
Barry Goldwater – born in AZ Territory before Statehood
Chester A. Arthur – born in Vermont (???) to an American citizen mother and an Irish immigrant father; Arthur’s father did not become an American citizen until Arthur was about 14. (Technically, Arthur himself could have claimed dual Irish/American citizenship.)
And the question marks? Well, when Arthur’s opponents disputed his “natural born” status (was Orly Taits alive then?) because of his father’s nationality and were dismissed, they questioned whether Arthur had been born in Vermont or Canada as his birthplace was close to the border in an area not well mapped.
Arthur, Goldwater, Romney, Weiker and McCain were all Republicans. And they were all white.
I surely hope Ted Cruz (inski) does run in the GOP primary, along with Santorum, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, maybe Newtie again and Marco or P Bush. That should finish the Grand Old Poobahs.
28AggielandLiz… McCain is old, but not THAT old. The Panama Canal Zone was in existence from 1903 to 1979. McCain was born in what is now Coco Solo, Panama in the base hospital in 1936.. Coco Solo was supposed to be rehabiliitated as public housing for workers in the Colon Free Trade Zone, but somehow it never happened. The wonderful Cambio Creativo project is a”Republican” style self-help project, mostly connected with the Afro-Antillean Evangelical Church, and some small donors. They stick to basics… after-school tutoring, finding transportation for workers and getting water and electricity to the complex. Mr. McCain might want to help out his home-town (cambiocreativo.org).
