I’m Up. I’m Not Happy About It But I’m Up

September 07, 2012 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay, here’s the deal. I got back to the hotel at 3:00 am – long story and it involves Constable Ruben Davis, a medical doctor, three policeman, a bus, and a large woman with a pail of attitude, so you can bet your sweet patootie that I’ll be telling it – and it’s now 9:00 am, which means this is the most sleep I’ve had in four days.

But, Honey, you could not wipe the grin off my face with a stick of dynamite.

Bubba and I are taking the long way home through our beautiful, beloved South, eating our way back to Texas and breathing the crisp air of the Smoky Mountains. I have a thousand stories to tell you and you know I will.

Big, special, adoring hugs to Texas hero Glen Maxey for running the damn near perfect delegation organization and never once telling me to go slap myself, even when I thoroughly earned it.

Meanwhile, I have bags to pack, breakfast to eat, and 1,300 miles to home – all with a big ole grin on my face. So, I want you, my friends, to chatter amongst yourselves, enjoy any of our visiting postings and I’ll see you tonight in Tennessee.

Be social and share!

  1. Safe journey Juanita Jean and Bubba. Please, no sleeping while driving. That’s what rest areas and motels are for. 😉

While you dine on good Southern food we will be waiting to dine on your stories. And glorious dining it will be. For all of us.

  2. Glad you had such a great time! Who needs sleep when you are having so much fun. Living vicariously through you and can’t wait for the stories!

    All In!

    Safe travels home.

  6. Hi,
I just started reading your site. So you were a delegate to the DNC? How wonderful is that? What a party!

    6
  7. You two have a good, safe trip home! I can hardly wait to hear all the wonderful (and some funny) stories you have to tell us. It certainly seemed like it was an exceptionally great convention. At least that’s what I saw on the tee vee machine. Everyone there was beautiful and it made me proud to be a Democrat.

    7
  8. Get some well deserved rest on your way home dear lady, the battle starts in earnest uppon your return, “There be dragon’s that need slayin!'”

Poor dragons, born with silver spoons in their mouths…..

Texas sure does produce some mighty fine women, Richards, Ivins, Juanita Jean…

  9. You had me at the doctor and three policemen. Can’t wait!

Just carry with you, that all us fans are so proud of ya’ll and the work you did on behalf of all us patriots this week.
    God Speed Sug

  11. You made me laugh even before your blog came up. My first question after I clicked on it was, “Are you up?” and there you are. Now that I’ve had my chuckle, I’ll go back and read it. Love you!

    11
  12. I for one, am looking forward to the 1,000 stories; I feel like a “fan” wanting to know….everything. Like, is POTUS as commanding in person as I believe he is, etc.

You can stop by here in Middle TN tonight – I’m between Nashville and Clarksville, up Highway 12 – come on by~

The first e-mail I sent upon arriving at work this morning was to my co-worker, Alesia (the black woman with the college-age daughter mentioned in an earlier comment thread). And that e-mail said “Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and call us in the morning.” Her response was “Just Awesome. Got to order the the speechs!”
Looking forward to all those stories. You’re going to tell us why Glen Maxey should have told you to go slap yourself, right? Sounds like a good one.

    13
  14. Glad you had a great time, I couldn’t think of a better Convention to attend in recent history.
Looking forward to the stories from the inside.
You and Bubba drive safe, and enjoy your meals along the way and get some well deserved rest with a late wake up call in the morning.

  15. Marge Wood says:

I had no idea Glen Maxey was behind all that carrying on with the Texans, not that it surprises me. Thanks for letting us know. And we cannot wait for more stories. Look honey, just drive a hundred miles and stop and sleep a bunch. It’s okay. We’ll let you. Well, maybe til mid-afternoon.

    15
  16. Glad you enjoyed my town. Come back soon, ya hear? 🙂

    16
  17. A high point for me was when Cecile Richards spoke and mentioned her mother, Ann Richards. The place exploded and Cecile had to fight hard not to cry. Ann Richards was a heroine!

  18. Janice Stewart says:

Anxiously awaiting your first-hand reports.Hope you have a safe trip home. One favor, pleeeeease? I’ve been in Kansas (from TX) 20 years now and haven’t had a decent piece of fried chicken since I got here and I do crave it. Please, just once, have a good piece of fried chicken for me. No KFC, no Popeye’s, just good, crisp, regular fried chicken. (Which piece is your choice.) Thank you, and bless you and Bubba for giving your time and energy.

    18
  19. All the well wishes from others, cubed!

    19
  20. Glad you got to take a trip through the Smokies! Best place on earth. You’ve gotta love TN…well, if you can just ignore some of the backwards thinking and Southern-bred political thinking. We love it here in the foothills…and a lot of
northerners are moving here…and bringing their education with ’em. 😉

  21. Sam in Kyle says:

Hope they’ve rebuilt Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa.

    21
  22. I expected no less!

    22
  23. Lorraine in Spring says:

DNC 2012 Stories by Juanita Jean HerOwnSelf … hmmm, maybe you could open a beauty salon or something so we can all get together to hear the stories. Can’t wait to see what kind of goodies you brought back too! Drive safe!

    23
  24. If you’re eating your way through the South, y’all better make sure to stop in Lafayette.

Sam: Dreamland is up and running (and it’s great). Depending on the route they’re taking, I’d also recommend Big Bob Gibson in Decatur or Ubon’s over in Yazoo City, MS. And if you’re going through Tennessee, Martin’s in Nashville is fabulous.

    24
  25. Janice Stewart, I am not sure where you are in Kansas but if it is close to the state line I can recomend a great place in North Kansas City, Missouri for fried chicken – Strouds (5410 NE Oak Ridge Dr). Best fried chicken in the area. All this talk of BBQ and fried chicken has my tummy growling! Now look what ya’ll did!

    25
  26. Kansas has some great surprises, too. I once ordered a cinnamon roll at a small restaurant in Pittsfield and they brought it on a dinner plate. It took up the entire plate. It was also TO DIE FOR delicious.

    26
  27. Gotta hear about the “large woman with a pail full of attitude!”

    27
  28. Mary in San Antonio says:

Gramiam, your cinnamon roll sounds like the ones we can get at Lulu’s here in San Antonio. Her cinnamon rolls weigh in at 3 pounds and can feed a family of 8 or one hungry teenaged boy.

There’s a story that goes along with Lulu’s rolls. At one time, she and her husband owned and operated the Jailhouse Cafe, right across from the jail, where Lulu first started making these huge cinnamon rolls. They went along swimmingly for a number of years, and then Lulu and the Mister divorced. There was a big hoohah over who got to keep the cafe’s name and who got to keep the cinnamon roll recipe. Well, the Mister got to keep the Jailhouse name and Lulu got the recipe. Now the Jailhouse is getting bad reviews concerning their food and service, and Lulu now runs Lulu’s Bakery and Cafe, where they sell the cinnamon rolls all day long. You can even order them by mail. And the chicken fried steak is also outstanding and way more than I can eat at a single sitting.

So come to San Antonio and eat more than you think you can at Lulu’s and get a cinnamon roll that you can share with your entire family.

  29. Mary in San Antonio says:

Forgot to say, have a great trip home, JJ and I am looking forward to your convention stories, especially the one with the woman with a pail of attitude.
