Introducing …

August 15, 2012 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

I want you guys to meet my esteemed seatmate on State Democratic Executive Committee.  His name is The Honorable Huey Rey Fischer and he is the youngest member of the Executive Committee.

(No, I am not the oldest and even if I were, do you think I’d admit to that?  There’s at least three white guys older than me and they are fond of getting up at meetings and saying things like, “If we’ve been doing something the same way for 100 years, there’s probably a good reason for it.”  Yeah, like how we still require everybody to ride a horse to Austin for the meeting.  They also announced that before we got any cockamamie newfangled ideas, we should check with the three old white guys prior to doing anything.  You know, because the old white guys are endowed with special knowledge and they have done such a bang up job making the Texas Democratic Party successful.  These opinions are my own and not Huey’s.  Huey is a much nicer person than I am.)

The Honorable Huey Rey Fischer

Anyway, Huey sits next to me and doesn’t make fun of me when I lose my glasses or attempt to tap on my computer screen thinking it’s my iPad, which I think is real nice of him.  He taught me how to Twitter during the Tom DeLay trial and even showed me how to win free pizza on the Twitter machine, which comes in handier than you’d suspect.

Huey is a student at UT (Hook ‘Em) and the retired president of University Democrats there.  He’s like 20 years old and already an elder statesman emeritus.

He’s kinda smart and plenty conniving.  In the good way.  Two years ago, he found a loophole that allowed him to serve on a committee at the State Convention before he was even allowed to register to vote.  He will be voting in his first Presidential election this year and is already on the Executive Committee and a national delegate.  Hell, it took me 45 years to do that and I am one conniving machine.

So you might have noticed a new link over there to the right for the Texas Monitor.  Huey and some friends started a blog of young, progressive voices in Texas.  I check it every day and especially to see if my seatmate has something smart to say.  He often does.

The only fault I can find with Huey is that he’s a vegetarian.  In Texas.  That just ain’t right.

Watch this kiddo.  He’s going places.

Be social and share!

  1. Checked out the website, via Facebook. Look forward to what they will have to say.

I still haven’t gotten involved in the Twitter thing. I’m behind the times on that I know.

But Mr. Fischer is right…… use the social media to the fullest extent it can be used, and reach as many people with you message as you possibly can reach.

    Be foolish not to.

  2. Lorraine in Spring says:

Dang, what a catch, JJ! And he’s cute too. I once had a 7th grade crush on a Huey. Never worked out, but he wasn’t as bright as this one. Have fun working together! Be sure to Tweet pics!

  3. Huey is cute as a button and as nice as can be! I’m hoping he’ll stop in at our Democratic Rally this Saturday! We’d love to see him again!

And we all will see him again–Huey is going places!

  4. Vegetarians for Huey!

  5. Thank the good Lord that the right thinking Democrats of Texas have severly pruned the ranks of folk like Dr. Dennis Teel, Bill Brannon and evn my friend Bob Slagle. Everything has a shelf life and I would be loathe to follow the lead of these dinosaurs seeing as how Dr. Teel has served for 20 odd years and his district has become the most Republican in Texas…..of course it could be that winning personality of knowing it all and trying to be cute like calling the Dean of the Senate Quitmire. Don’t have to worry about Huey over staying his welcome or his usefullness….he has lots bigger fish to fry than making a career of serving on the SDEC….Go get em Huey…..and I will forgive yor transgression of being one of those Horns!

  6. Welcome Huey,

American Democrats NEED you – you are our very own Mark Zuckerberg~

Miemaw – watch The Social Network movie a couple of times – REALLY listen, at the part where Mark says something to the effect of “yeah, but WHO are they sending it to” = VERY IMPORTANT – I had signed up for Twitter in the beginning but never TWITTED until I saw that movie, now I am a regular powerhouse of busting RePigs from all states and you can block the RWNJ and spammers, so when they attack, you BLOCK. It is rather like “Fantasy Football” I would imagine…dunno nuthin’ about Fantasy Football, but hey, it gets your comments OUT to tons of folks anyhoo….@Eykis on the Twitter machine – today’s project is the Ohio SOS and his trying to keep Dems from early voting – it has gone viral. Have some xtra fun~see below

  7. Juanita,

DO NOT tell anybody’s Momma about @Eykis on Twitter – if they are like my 82 yro Momma, they cannot figure it out anyway, sometimes @Eykis is NSFW on Twitter.

  8. OK folks…… Somebody explain to me…… how do you do this on a dinosaur PC???? I live on Social Security…. Upgrading to something more fancy…… technologically is not an option.

    And I don’t know, if I can say what I want to say in …… what……… 140 characters….

How do you bless people out???? with that????

I’ll be glad to try it….. I just don’t know how you get from …..here……. to there.

    I’m open to suggestions.

    8
  9. Seriously? A vegetarian? In the home of Franklin’s, Luling City Market, Smitty’s, and the Taylor Cafe? Somebody better have that boy tested.

    9
  10. Oh…. I went to Twitter.com….. and tried it…. I may go back…. but only when I have a LOT more time to devote to “Twitter”.

    10
  11. I’ll be the first to admit…… patience is NOT my strong suit.

I have been on Facebook for years. My “friends” are, with few exceptions….. “family”. There are about 50 of us…. and at times we have been located all over the country. Facebook is how we share pictures of our babies, baptisms, planned weddings, injuries, catastrophes, job changes, where we are, and what we are doing. Sad to say, this is how my family keeps in touch. May be weird…… but it works.

Facebook has as little of who I am personally, as I can get by with. I’m not sure I want to share that on the net with Twitter, or anybody else. I’m a private person……. and I like my privacy. Do they really need to know what football team I like?

I’m going to ponder this a while.

  12. Miemaw,

Take a long time – do your profile and settings and preferences. Read carefully so you can pick what you want to see…

When I want to say something, not just be a smart-aleck which I am very good at – I type my “tweet” out in Word or Notepad or whatever – under Tools you can look at Word count. Then I edit. After that, I just copy and keep “pasting” the same Tweet every once in a while…you need to follow people you like and they will follow you back. Be careful, lots of spammers and porners will try when you are new, just Block as Spam.

If you do not know how to copy and paste under Edit, select all, copy and then put your cursor when you want to paste and you can just Control “v” and it will paste easy for you.

    12
  13. I have my entire family and high school on Facebook, but have NEVER put a photo of myself on the internet, just never have gotten ’round to it’ and I find FB to be highly annoying most of the time. Twitter is easier for me to get my point across. Without a new photo on FB everybody thinks I look like I did when they post high school photos when I was 17 – I kinda like that part, tho.

    13
  14. Miewmaw, sorry to be so wordy, but NO, you do NOT have to let everyone or anyone “know” who you are-that is the both the good and bad of the internet.

    14
  15. @Eykis, I appreciate the feedback. My cat is my Facebook picture, sometimes…. it’s my roses, sometimes…. it’s my dog.

I think it is wise …… to keep personal information personal, and if you put it on Facebook, or Twitter….. you are sharing it with the world….. and I don’t think that’s a prudent thing to do. I’m still pondering, but I probably will get around to finishing up more than my user name, and password (at some point.) And then I can tweet..or whatever… (I guess.)

  16. Breaking News – WE WON in OHIO

RevAl just announced OHIOANS get same voting hours…the trick:

“Yeah, but who do they send it to?”

    YIPEE~

  17. I have been privileged to know Huey since before he could vote, and I am so delighted that Democrats all over the state are finding out what some of us have known for a long time–Huey is going places. He is the future of this party in this state as we work to turn it blue. It couldn’t be in better hands.
