There’s Gonna Be An App for That, Thank Goodness

June 22, 2012 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay, say you’re shopping and you are determined NOT to buy one single damn thing where the Koch brothers make even a stinking .00001 cent off your purchase.

There’s fixing to be an app for that.  Seriously.

Darcy Burner, a Democrat running for Washington’s 1st Congressional District came up with the idea.

“Our democracy has been bought and sold by people like the Kochs,” Burner said, citing the Citizens United ruling that allows tax exempt nonprofits like Americans for Prosperity, founded by David Koch, to donate anonymously in unlimited amounts to candidates and causes. “When I’m out talking to voters, they say they want a way to take action.”

At her recent Netroots Nation keynote address, Burner pitched her plan of action to an audience of progressive bloggers: a smartphone app allowing shoppers to swipe bar codes to check whether the Kochs, or other right-wing supporters, are behind a product on the shelves.

I am so getting that app.  Not one dime to the Koch brothers.

I will be happy to live my life Koch free.

Be social and share!

  1. Hope there will be one for androids, too. I have a short list in my purse now but an app would be better. With ya all the way on this.

I may have to get a smart phone after all! This would make it worth it–as well as an app for genetically modified and high pesticide foods–Things to also stay away from!

I’ve been looking at the back labels on all paper products I buy to make sure they aren’t from Georgia-Pacific, which is owned by Koch Bros. So, no “Brawny” for me.

  6. I spend a lot of time reading labels…. an app sure would be more better.

  7. Oh, God bless her. I tried swearing off those guys a couple of years ago and found their fingers in everything I buy. They are everywhere. It was hard to keep up cause they keep buying companies and merging. My neighbor works for them and didn’t even know it.

The paper is pretty easy to keep tabs on. The fiber is a real problem.

  8. I’m the same as BarbinDC in that I look at labels and throw any back from Georgia-Pacific. Now I’m shopping for new carpeting and run from StainMasters.

    I am all for this!

Trouble is, they are already so stinking wealthy that even if they never made one more dime, they’d be set for the little life they have before them and could leave huge trust funds for all their family.

The people who will be hurt are the workers – thousands and thousands of them because the Koch bros. empire has its fingers into so many industries.

Still, it’s better than adding more to their stockpile of riches. I would just love to see some investigations made into those PACs they fund. I wonder how much dirt there is considering their tactics.

I try to avoid Sam’s and Wal-Mart because the Walton family contribute to the GOTP Big Time and often allow GOTP candidates to solicit outside their doors. I avoid Target because of their anti-gay donations, so I would be just as happy to avoid Koch-generated businesses as well.

  11. The Rebops will want one too, so if she develops one, she should by all means build a *special* version for them too!!!
Theirs should be sold as a subscription service with routine price hikes, revision upgrades at random times, and of course should be just a little buggy…you know, with locked screens, spontaneous dialing & memory wipeouts now and then. Sometimes it might even block Koch products by mistake! Ceertainly that would be just terrible, so I’d be happy to volunteer my time working the customer support phone-lines for such a product. Yep, happy and proud.
    “Customer Support, can you hold?”‘
“We’re very sorry you feel that way, can you hold?” (etc.)

Darcy rocks. This doesn’t surprise me. I’m just shocked I had to go to the Beauty Salon to learn about this!!! I met her in January. She made buttons for every State Committeeman and woman, and every County Chair, and handed them out at the State Committee Meeting. She also gave a great workshop after the meeting. She’s running for Congress in the 1st Congressional District (vacated by Jay Inslee who is running for gov). There are 6 Ds running, the State Convention failed to endorse and will wait until after the primary. Darcy led the voting, I hope she prevails. We need progressives like her in Congress, and she’s got the know how to be effective.

  13. I hate to bum anyone’s anti-Koch Boyz high, but lots of American workers are employed by them. I know, I know…I hate ’em as much as anyone on here. But I work for the Steelworkers Union, and we represent all the paperworkers who are union members, loads of chemical and forestry workers who are unionized, and others. Then as you know, there are workers who are not union members (hellooooo, Texas…) who work at Koch-owned industries. Jussayin…if you really want to hurt them and not thousands of American workers, we gotta come up with something different. Like maybe making contributions to defeat R’s now…

  14. Janice Stewart says:

Hilary I so agree with you. I feel I must support American workers but I really hate helping out the Kochs. The problem with trying to compete with the R’s in donations is that, thanks to the R’s, I am now too poor to contribute my usual amounts. I never could do a lot, but it’s really, really hard now. A couple of months ago I had $50 left at the end of my month, so that went to the President. Next month, doctor added another RX – so I didn’t have any money left at the end of the month. My pretty regular $25’s and $50’s of 2008 are now $5’s and $10’s and very irregular. The wealthy of the Dems need to step up. I know some have, but until they are down to my level, they can always give more. We MUST reelct Pres. Obama and we must have more DEms in Senate and House. My state, Kansas, is too far gone. We’ll be holding the legislative sessions in the Church just any day now, I’m sure. Please, please, 1% who are Dems, help the party out.
