Why Republicans oppose birth control.

Seriously.  They really are.

  1. The funny thing about their opposition to birth control is that they assume if their kind procreates, they’ll make more. My parents were right-wing Texas crackers–and look at me. I was burning my bra before I even hit 17. Working for NOW, volunteering at Planned Parenthood, canceling out my father’s votes every election day for decades. Only one of their kids turned out to be a bigot like them. And he’s a felon–and does not vote. Schnort.

Like albino dinosaurs, Republicans are white, aging and dying off? How can I help!

Actually, I’ve been joking for years: we Hispanics are going to Fibonacci our way to power. Why do you think the first minority President sent the entire right into such a virulent tizzy? To paraphrase a great Jedi Master: Fear leads to Anger, Anger Leads to Hate, Hate leads to… Tea Parties.

Here’s a question, though: why is this such a bad (or good) thing? It’s just a thing; it is what it is.

If people fear that, somehow, we Hispanics are going to make things WORSE by making America more Hispanic, well then, why resist what’s here? Instead of firing up the flames of intolerance, why not just heat up the old Melting Pot? Acceptance leads to Assimilation leads to American!

My grandparents came to America at the same time and for the same reason as Mitt Romney’s. They spoke no English. Born in San Antonio, my mother didn’t speak English until she was six. Two generations later, I have a Masters Degree, have taught college and have held elective office, and I only speak high school Spanish.

There’s nothing to fear, if they handle this right. I don’t know what they’re afraid of… unless it’s being treated the same way they treated other minorities.

    karma es una perra

I’ve done my part. I’m white, aging, and failed to reproduce (by choice because I didn’t want to take the chance that I’d be right about my suspected lack of parenting skills.) I’m also the adult child of God-fearing Republicans (Rockerfeller/Hinze flavor.)

  4. Yes, life’s a bitch. I personally think these old white racists are afraid karma is going to come back and bite them in the ass for the way they have traditionally treated minorities all their lives. Furthermore, I think if everyone starts reproducing like crazy because they have no birth control, no abortions and no choice, they…well, certainly the old white racists…are going to arrive at minority status a heck of a lot sooner. They are unbelievable stupid!

  5. Uncle Dave says:

It’s really very sad; many of those folks are afraid of losing a world which they misperceive and, at the same time, for which they are nostalgic. Hell, a lot of them worked hard for the American Dream, and now discover it is an illusion. They either do not accept or cannot comprehend the reasons why it is denied to them. Truly, they are as much to be pitied as censured.

  6. daChipster…I can’t help it, I want to modify the paraphrase a bit:

To paraphrase a great Jedi Master: Fear leads to Anger, Anger Leads to Hate, Hate leads to…madness, and madness leads to Tea Parties – Just ask Alice.

daChipster says, “I don’t know what they’re afraid of… unless it’s being treated the same way they treated other minorities.”

    Bingo.

    That is all.

    7
  8. They’re dying off, but like the crazies who want want to go in a blaze of hatred by killing as many of their family, co-workers, classmates neighbors, people who may have slighted them at one time and total strangers, they want to take the country down with ’em.

But life goes on, and as they atrophy things will get better. During the KKK heyday from the ’20s to the ’60s, there were many who thought that was the way things were going to be, but they eventually burned out until all that remains is a little hateful piece of charcoal that sputters a few sparks now and then.

In my high school US History class my teacher spoke of the ‘do-nothings’ as a funny moment in time, I can’t wait to see how the Tea Party will look to students in 30 years.

    daChipster:
Brilliant essay, maybe your best ever. I am one of those described by CNN. However, the “G”reedy “O”ld “P”erverts party lost me after 1963. For a long time they just kind of annoyed me but that has turned to outright distaste at times bordering on extreme rage!
¡Sigue siendo fuerte mi amigo ( hope I translated okay)

  10. cairocat says:

My father’s parents came to American about the same time as DaChipster’s. They came for the reasons most immigrants did. Poverty (grandmother) and politics (grandfather); neither finished the 8th grade. They had four sons who all finished high school. When my grandfather died during the depression my grandmother literally scrubbed floor to make ends meet and refused to allow the youngest to drop out before graduation.
Their four sons had eleven children. Ten graduated college, five went to graduate school, one is a banker, four are lawyers and three are teachers.
Do you think that’s what the present-day Repubs are afraid of?

    10
  11. …er, make that unbelievably…stupid.

    11
  12. “I don’t know what they’re afraid of… unless it’s being treated the same way they treated other minorities.”

    THIS.

I hope I live to see a truly diverse U.S.A.

    Aw, shucks.

  15. daChipster, I’m an old white woman, who agrees with what you wrote. I returned to Texas when I retired after living in Los Angeles for 35 years. I had brothers in Houston, Austin and San Antonio; I chose to live in San Antonio because I found it the most interesting and welcoming city in Texas, primarily because of the heavy Hispanic history and influence. We have a wonderful, very intelligent young Hispanic mayor, and our basketball team ain’t bad either.

  16. So in a few years the “Southern Strategy” will be about the GOP trying to win back all the voters they’ve spent decades demonizing.

  17. Grand Kludd says:

brian, actually it was the “Know Nothings,” organized politically as the American Party. They had a blissfully short life as the Republican Party was organizing at the same time to offer their voters a progressive option for change. Hopefully the GOP will go the way of the Whig Party, and just dry up and blow away.
