Trump Is Not Coming To Houston

August 29, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Yeah, he ain’t coming here.  He’s going to Corpus Christi and then dropping by Austin to strut with the Governor.

Here’s the deal. Undocumented workers were refusing to go to shelters because they feared it was a ruse by ICE. So, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez went on tv, speaking in Spanish, to say that he would personally insure that they would not be arrested or detained.  Then Mayor Sylvester Turner, a lawyer, said that if they were detained, he would personally represent them for free.

Trump and his sheriff would not feel at home here.

  1. Thanks for unconfusing me. After hearing that he was going to Houston so often I wondered what the heck happened. Maybe the Secret Service nixed the idea inasmuch as the local hospitals are overworked. And there might not be much of a space to land Marine One or whatever he is flying these days.

    1
  2. Trump and Arpiao will never feel at home among civilized people.

    2
  3. Plenty of stories about athletes in and from Houston and team owners raising money for relief effort. Not so much from “preachers”

  4. Linda Phipps says:

A: His supply of Play-Doh didn’t come through. I know he sent other things but the P-D was so spectacularly inappropriate.
B: He needed to comfort Arpaio upon the news that undocumented HUMAN BEINGS would not be detained and tortured.
C: Maybe he can have A-F One fly over at 5000 feet so he can verify the fake news.
Yeah, I don’t like anything about him. I guess he gets a little redemption by appointing someone who knows what he’s doing to head up FEMA.

    4
  5. FEMA should have recorded in lessons learned after Katrina and Ike that the arrival of elected officials like POTUS or governors with large entourages on the ground is a ginormous PITA for on-going rescue operations. As the representative of national authority, the FEMA site commander should be able to effectively discourage this distraction and waste of human resources. And I say this recalling what great POTUS we have had in the recent past and how their words of comfort helped.

It saddens me that any one person would discourage another seeking shelter during this emergency with the specter of ICE arrest. Certainly ICE folks should be on-site as part of the federal response, but only in their search and rescue role, along with Border Patrol and etc. Houston’s situation report calls for all hands response from the State of Texas and from particular federal agencies. Incarcerating the random illegal person at this point ought to be about nth on the priority list.

  6. Just saw the photos of the Rump and wife arriving in Austin. My question: How dumb does one have to be to wear khaki trousers (him) and spike heels (her) to a disaster area?
What were they thinking? Rump, a little golf maybe? Wife, a little gator spearing?

Preachers mostly like to have benefits for themselves, Paul! Although some little Bastist pastor opened his church right up when the Maxwell Center first got overwhelmed, so some of them still have their heads screwed on straight,

  8. TX peeps: If you have internet access and have to file a flood-related claim, please read this: https://www.texastribune.org/2017/08/28/harvey-insurance-claims/

    8
  9. It would really be nice if once all the TX peeps were safe that the good citizens of Texas would take a real hard look at their TX leadership ( using that term loosely). Sort through the BS flood that is to come and really turn out to vote in 2018.

Props to the Sheriff and the Mayor! Trump wouldn’t be much use in a disaster zone, anyway. The farther away he stays, the better.

  12. Tilphousia says:

Awe darn! And I was hoping the cockwomble would have the good fortune to fall on to one of those floating fire ant nests.

    12
  13. If he came to Houston, he’d probably think all those people at the GRB were there just to see him.

    13
  14. Jane & PKM says:

Worst national disaster evuh lands in Austin: Donnie and Messy.

    14
  15. Maggie; when the POTUS and Flotus travel, 50 units of their blood type has to be held on storage at a trauma level 1 hospital and all trauma staff on hand. Of course unimpeded access to the hospital is required. My guess is that Houston didn’t meet even two of these three requirements. There are probably dozens of other requirements, but these are the ones I know about. I’m sure the major hospitals in Houston said we’re busy, go away. The military base near Austin can meet these requirements, hence the change in venue.

    15
  16. @Tilphousia
For years I have told visitors and new residents from out of state “Every natural thing in Texas bites, sticks, or stings.”

Fire ants use their bite to hang on, then sting to inject a toxic venom which feels like a burn. Allergic or sensitive humans can die from the venom.

Texas also proudly (?) boasts 15 potentially dangerous snake species as well as black widow and brown recluse spiders. Scorpions. Alligators. The list goes on and on.

    16
  17. Micr, that’s moderately impressive, but don’t try going toe-to-toe with an Australian for dangerous or hostile wildlife. They have the world’s most venomous snakes, spiders, jellyfish, sea lice, huge saltwater crocs, and I don’t know whatall else. It’s like even the freaking water wants to kill and eat you. It will increase your respect for the native Australians– the world’s oldest cultures– that they managed to survive and flourish there for thousands of years.

    17
  18. After surveying Hurricane Harvey damage in Corpus Christi on Tuesday, President Donald Trump addressed victims of the storm and praised those who had gathered to hear his remarks, “What a crowd, what a turn out.”

According to a press pool report, Trump spoke to a “throng of hundreds” outside of the Annaville Fire House, though not all were supporters. Some, apparently, were protestors: “One banner read ‘Liar, cheat, racist’ another read ‘Latinas against Trump’ and another ‘You pardoned Joe, what about José?’”

    https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/29/16222404/trump-crowd-hurricane-harvey-victims

    What a crowd, what a turnout… what an a**hole.

    18
  19. 1. Good. Let him annoy the annoying state government. Melania is wearing a cap labeled “FLOTUS”, in case anybody (including her?) forgets what she’s doing there. And Trump’s wearing a cap that his campaign is selling for only $40 a pop. That’s the trashiest human being ever.
    2. Good for Gonzalez and Turner. Nice to see some compassion in elected officials.

You guys still OK there? Thinking of you.

    19
  20. If I am mistaken, please set me straight, but I was under the impression that Trump never did appoint a Director of Fema and the people running it are the longtime professional staffers who actually know what they are doing. Please correct me if wrong.

    20
  21. I have it on private authority that he is going to deploy Rick Perry.

  24. SCrew the grifters. God bless all REAL Texans — those who open their furniture stores to house and feed those who’ve been displaced; who go out in their motorboats to check on / rescue their neighbors; who don’t need Twitter-shaming to open their houses of worship to those needing shelter, and who broadcast IN SPANISH that no one’s calling ICE. And the mayor promised he’d represent anyone who did get picked up.

    Man’s got style.

    24
  25. Lunargent says:

Hey, Houston finally caught a break!

    “What a turnout!”????

    Mentally disordered.
    UNFIT TO SERVE.

    25
  26. So, our local news here is running continuous Harvey coverage until it passes, probably through tomorrow. We sat down to eat at an unfortunate time. They cut to a meeting in progress with Donnie John Douchebag. Some lady was briefing him. Then she finished and he called on Ben Carson. OH. MY. GOD. The industrial strength, professional grade, disgustingly North Koreanesque ass smooching was enough to make you lose all thoughts of hunger. But not to worry folks, I was able to overcome the almost uncontrollable urge to frisbee throw my plate of hamburger helper into our electrical teevee long enough to mute it. Our poor Panasonic lives to fight another day. But if I don’t switch to paper plates before the weaselheaded f**knugget is impeached, I’m afraid it’s not long for this world.

    Rhea for the win!
Time to get serious about climate change, rational people are going to conclude that some places are going to be uninhabitable.

Remember, hurricane season is not even at the midpoint! The traditional end of the season is 1Nov (IIRC), but will likely need to be lengthened soon…

Here are some cumulative rainfall and wind numbers (I edited to shorten, rmved LA and smaller TX #’s, all are at the link).
These are some eyepopping numbers and the rain is still coming.:

  28. Sandridge says:

    Water’s mass/weight (yeah, I know), 1,000 kg/m3 (62.43 lb/cu ft).

Assuming that JUST Harris County, TX has received an average of 24 inches of rainfall with Harvey, 2 feet depth, let’s make a rough calculation on how much that water weighs, and ponder how much energy it took to lift that mass, and transport it (at sometimes high speeds) (I’m NOT going to do this for all the other SE TX counties affected):
(Using non-metric units, metric would of course be somewhat easier to calculate, but that would require even more conversions)

    Water weighs aprx 62.5lb/cu ft.
Harris County has 1,777 square miles of area
One square mile has 47,393,280,000 square feet (47.4 million ft2)
If we envision those sq ft as cubic feet, multiply each by 62.5 (lbs), we get 2,062,080,000,000 pounds of water dropped from Harvey (2 Billion lbs).
But wait…we need to double that number, since the rainfall was TWO FEET DEEP, not just one:
So we get 5,924,160,000,000 pounds of water that fell on just Harris County.

Your home mop bucket usually holds about ONE cubic foot of water (I think), 3 or 4 gallons at 8.34 pounds per gallon, so 25 to 34 pounds of water in the bucket.

    5,924,160,000,000 pounds of water…almost SIX TRILLION POUNDS…
Divided by 2,000lbs, equals 2,962,080,000, almost THREE BILLION TONS of water…

OK, that’s 5.924 TRILLION pounds of water, transported perhaps on average 100-200 miles, after getting lifted 400 to 40,000 feet up in the sky.

Anybody want to volunteer to do the power calculations for that to come up with Watt and horsepower numbers that are easy to comprehend?
In any case, that’s a LOT of water in a few days.

I’m bushed, my little gray cells are steaming and smoking…what few I have left.
    .
Hope I got this right, could be off orders of magnitude (but I was the kid who never had a wrong answer in school until about the 9th grade, rly, drove the poor nuns nuts).

  29. Sandridge says:

    P P,
BTDT. My Samsung may not survive either.
I watched some of the coverage too, starting this morning, since it’s close by. Somebody passed overhead at least once, was wishing for a Sam…my Davis, yeah, a song…

You could tell the whole damn thing was carefully crafted by the handlers (and I think Abbott was one of the prime movers) to attempt to make tRump look super-presidential, not screw up, and max out the propaganda value of the moment.
The Corpus landing, visit to the nearby Annaville VFD station, all of it was pointless as far as actually doing anything. The dumbshit saw nothing at all of the damage (unless they showed him some video). I thought he looked bored and distracted some of the time. He fired up when he could puff up and appear to say something ‘insprirational. That was it.
They all went back to Austin, where the real dealing went on behind closed doors.

    Sandridge –
You are absolutely the most intense Weather Geek that I’ve ever encountered. And I sometimes skip your posts. Because, even though I’m an old former Mensan, I come down heavy on the verbal end of the scale, and they’re totally incomprehensible to me.

But when you put it in terms of buckets, and pounds, and the sheer energy contained and expended – it’s mindblowing. And makes it a little more accessible for those of us who aren’t weather data savants.

Thanks. Keep on doin’ what you do.

    30

Melancholy had to wear the FLOTUS cap in case IOW forgets who she is and wanders off with another woman.
    OMG, he’s so utterly worthless.

    31
  32. Several Houston area mosques that are dry have opened their doors to flood refugees.

DID YOU HEAR THAT YOU MUSLIM HATER DUMB FRUCKS!?!?!
(Sorry, I just had to vent.)

    32
  33. Sandridge says:

    Lunargent,
    Gahwaarssh…

Yeah, I follow the WX pretty close (sailors do), have a weather station too. But believe me, I’m just a dilettante piker compared to most of the WX dudes on some weather websites out there, those guys are serious x10-9th.
    .
But I think I did get some trillions mixed with billions, dang it.

I found some drone footage (on the PBS TV news bumper, shows a local station and CNN credits) that pans over my marina, but that video edit stops just short of where my boat is (or was :[ ).

My part-time home, y’all are probably seeing this on the TV too, shheeiit.
The rest of the marina looks gawdawful.
The parking lot appears to be under water, and I seem to remember there being a bunch of lightpoles in it (like a store lot). They ain’t none of those things there now…

Not only are there two huge drystack buildings, about 3-4 stories tall (boat warehouses), full of fishing boats, totally demolished, but it looks like every hauled out boat that was up on stands has been knocked over and tossed around (there were some beautiful big boats there, hauled out, and in slips) .
The other side of the marina had slips that were full of very nice boats, they don’t appear to be there now (mine is/was too). Gawddamn!
It might be just out of left frame.
But even the marina chithouse is missing…Hoollee Chit!
    .
I need a drink of Bacardi, no this calls for that gift Dos Maderas P.X. 5+5 double aged dark rum (just found it). Before the 10 o’clock news.

    33
  34. @Sandridge

Recently, bought a single dusty Whaler’s Original Dark at Trader Joe’s for a good price. Goes well with Coca Cola IMO. YMMV.

    34
  35. Linda Phipps says:

Perspective: there are a lot of “comparisons” floating (pardon the pun) around. It’s just as descriptive to SEE the impact than to envision a trillion of anything. Come ON! A lot of people can only count as many as their fingers and toes combined.

    35
  36. Well, we didn’t vote for him last year (Clinton won the county by more than 13%), so he wouldn’t be interested even if it were convenient to come here at the moment, would he?

    36
  37. Sandridge says:

    Micr,
The rum sounds good, but I never touch Coke (or the like), besides a good rum needs only a little ice.
Never been in a Trader Joe’s, think there’s one up in San Antonio at the Quarry, kids probably go there, way too far away for me.

    38
  38. @maggie says, we once upon a time tried to get Rosalyn Carter to speak at a Mental Health Center in our area. When we were informed what we would have to do to support that invitation we were blown away. No we do not have a Level 1 trauma center and heaven only knows where we would have been able to lock down such an amount of blood. And of course the Secret Service detail would have to come out and run a scope on the facility we had for the speech. We were really downhearted that this did not play out as Mrs. Carter had a great way of proving the link between mental illnesses and a lot of other things that happen to one and all such as poverty, etc.

    40
  39. OK. How did my moniker get a sudden change! I’m just plain old “maggie”.
