For Your New Year’s Reading. But It Ain’t Pretty

The New Yorker has published a depressing piece by Evan Osnos, about how Trump has stupidly ceded global leadership and how China has rushed in to fill the vacuum.  Trump can very likely become our version of Gorbachev, who, you will recall, oversaw the unraveling of the Soviet Union into a loose amalgamation of oligarchies and totalitarian states dominated by Russia.  From the very first moment of his term, Trump has set about unraveling our country’s generations-old leadership position in the world, and China has gladly Hoovered up every opportunity to exercise its new found world position.
One notable of example of this phenomenon was the World Trade Organization conference in Marakesh last October, convened to update international trade rules.  We’ll let Osnos tell this sorry tale:

“The Trump Administration, which has been critical of the W.T.O., sent an official who delivered a speech and departed early. ‘For two days of meetings, there were no Americans,’ a former U.S. official told me. ‘And the Chinese were going into every session and chortling about how they were now guarantors of the trading system.’”

Trump continually boasts about “Making America Great Again”, and “Putting America First.”  The problem is that he simply doesn’t understand what that means and has made idiotic decisions that has diminished our country, and creating opportunities for other countries, especially China and Russia to jump into the breach.  Exiting the TPP was stupid.  Now American beef comes second to other beef producing countries like Australia.  Withdrawing from the Paris climate accords has damaged our reputation and stature throughout the world.  China is also negotiating to create the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which will form a 16 country free trade zone.  The US is NOT one of the 16 countries.

The damage that Trump has inflicted and continues to inflict will be multi-generational.  Some of the damage may never be repaired.  The US’s unilateral surrender of its prominent position as world leader has emboldened other countries to take over that prominence.  Protectionism and isolation never works, especially in the new, interconnected global market.

Russians Smuggling Oil to North Korea – Trump Twitter Feed Silent

December 30, 2017 By: El Jefe Category: Russians, Trump

Trump has ranted and raved about North Korea and “Little Rocketman” this year, has severely criticized China for not being tougher, and for continuing to truck and ship fuel oil into the country.  Visibility to that practice and further sanctions have served to choke off fuel to the Hermit Kingdom.  For a while, North Korean ships were loading in Russia and delivering into the country.  When that was discovered, surely that would choke off Kim Jong Un’s oil and drive him to the negotiating table, right?  Not so fast.  It’s now come to light that Russia has been loading fuel oils in Russia and then…wait for it…transferring those fuels to North Korean ships on the high seas.  That’s a direct violation of the UN sanctions agreed to by all, including Russia, and now they’ve been caught red handed smuggling into North Korea.  Trump’s response?  Dead silence.  Not one tweet or threat has been made since the news hit the wires today.

Now what is his orangeness to do?  Does he criticize Putin for violating international sanctions risking disclosure of the Pee-Pee Tapes, or does he stay silent, confirming his fealty to Russia?  We’ve never, in the history of the US, had such a compromised and ignorant buffoon infesting the White House.

God help us.

Because He Has More Secrets Than A Parish Priest

Okay, so Donald Trump got himself worked into a raging lather of sassy this weekend and announced in the Financial Times (sorry, subscription only so you’ll just have to trust me) that he has a plan for North Korea.

He says that during the upcoming Great China Golf Tournament and Talks About Trump Investments, he will ….

“Yes, we will talk about North Korea. And China has great influence over North Korea. And China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won’t. And if they do that will be very good for China, and if they don’t it won’t be good for anyone.”

That’s a lot of little words meaning, “North Korea will be a subject for discussion.”

Then with a little twinkle in his eye, he added …

Well, if China is not going to solve North Korea, we will. That is all I am telling you.

Somehow, that doesn’t make me feel better.

Erratic. Dangerous. Unstable. Alarming. Week One.

January 29, 2017 By: El Jefe Category: Trump

Week one of this presidency ended as it began – by scaring the sh*t out of the entire planet (sorry, Momma).  A week ago Friday, the worst, most unqualified candidate in history became the worst, most unqualified president in history.  My most uttered phrase this week?  Holy Jesus.  And I uttered that phrase over and over at each terrifying revelation.

As a case in point, at this very moment, the tabs on my browser summarize the reasons that normal people around the world are filled with fear and dread: US News’ Temperament Tantrum; NPR’s How Does [Cheeto Jesus’s] Immigration Freeze Square with His Business Interests?; [TwitterFinger] Shuffles NSC; and China Military Official Says war with US…’Becoming Practical Reality’.

Ruth Marcus’ opinion piece in the Washington Post this morning though, sums up this erratic week that we all experienced – alarming.  Cheeto Jesus seems to be intentionally trying scare the world, and it’s working.  China is resigned to a war with the US.  For the first time in our history, we have official US government policy of institutional religious discrimination.  Muslims are banned, Christians are given priority.  Oh, and conveniently, the ban applies only to Muslim majority countries where Twitterfinger has no business interests.  The others?  Not so much.

Of the legion of alarming decisions, though, the one reshuffling the National Security Counsel is the most disturbing.  The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Director of National Intelligence were removed and Steve Bannon, propagandist and alt-right racist was made a permanent member of the council.  Think about it – the most experienced voices of the military and national intelligence are now excluded from the highest level discussions of security and intelligence.  This decision boggles the mind and will have disastrous consequences.  The, uh…urp, president has zero foreign policy or defense experience (with the possible exception of his pee-pee parties with prostitutes in Moscow).  His direct reports are either warmongering nuts or self serving billionaires.  The senior diplomatic staff at the State Department has walked.  There are no ambassadors sitting in any of our embassies.  The Director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, is a hayseed teabagger from Kansas whose most important issues in his career have been destroying the healthcare system and denying women the right to control their own bodies.  The Secretary of Defense publicly disagrees with CJ on several issues, including torture.  Essentially, he is walling himself off from those with experience or decent judgement.

Cheeto Jesus talks in the word salad of a 5th grade playground bully.  Add that oddity to his intentionally provocative behavior and isolation and you have a volatile combination.  The risks of him touching off a major international crisis increases everyday.  He’ll finally poke someone in the eye, like China, and they’ll respond with a tactical weapon or shoot down an airliner.  I’m afraid that’s what it’s going to take before the Congress finally acts and removes this lunatic before he starts WWIII.

And In Other News, China Isn’t Very Happy

We all know the story about Cheeto Jesus provoking the Chinese (just for the hell of it) by breaking 40 years of diplomatic status quo by speaking directly with the president of Taiwan.  Yesterday, on Fox News Sunday, he doubled down saying,

I fully understand the ‘one China’ policy, but I don’t know why we have to be bound by a ‘one China’ policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.

China has said that the One China policy is “bedrock”.  Oh, and there’s this – China, for the first time in 18 months, flew one of their nuclear capable bombers over disputed waters in the South China Sea to warn CJ that they’re serious.

In the meantime, CJ says he doesn’t need a daily intelligence briefing.  God help us.
