A three term Republican congressman from Virginia is retiring?

Gee, I wonder what brought that on?

You’d think somebody did a poll in Virginia or something.

  5. Haven’t kept up with the count, but it’s a darn good start. We need 248 snacilbupeR gone from the House and 54 gone from the Senate. The sooner the better. Resignation is not as tasty as a straight up defeat at the polls or felony indictments, but I’ll accept their demise any way I get it.

Oh and 34 governors need to turn over as well; resignation, recall, defeat at the polls, or straight up criminal indictments. Whatever it takes.

This is a lot more important than your average retirement, like the Smiths and Poes. Goodlatte is the Chair of the Committee that would be the one to bring out impeachment charges — against Trump, Sessions, or whoever. The assumption from the Virginians I’ve read is that he could pull a Howard Smith, put the bill in his pocket and disappear for a month’s fishing. It is less likely that a replacement would have the seniority, strength or reputation that would enable his to do the same.

Bible thumping, twice kicked of the Alabama soopreme court, sinate candidate is an alleged pervert with a hankering for underage girls. 4 accusations so far.

  11. This is a bit weird. Goodlatte’s district went 2:1 for Gillespe, so he’s not at much risk. And it couldn’t be due to any ethical or moral qualms, because he doesn’t have any

  12. You may have noticed that a lot of the Rethug House retirees–including Goodlatte–are chairmen of important committees and, thanks to the idiocy of Rethug party (Hi, Newtie!), they are being term-limited out of their chairmanships. The Dems have no such term limits.

I wonder when (if?) the dumb ones will realize what an absolutely terrible idea term limits is.

If you haven’t seen their earlier work, it burns the R’s with some great parody/satire.

  14. He was my Congress critter when I lived in Roanoke, so I think 13 terms. Though when he first ran in the 90s, he campaigned on term limits and promised to leave after three terms. Got to Washington and decided he was wrong about term limits. That kind of guy.

My ‘take’ is that a lot of republicans are retiring because they know in their shriveled little hearts that they support the more liberal positions, but are too chicken to actually vote that way. But my favorite is the 13 term Marshall, of the Virginia state legislature, he of the transvaginal wand and opponent of LGBTQ rights was defeated by an openly trans woman who never ran for office before. Richmond will be richer for it.
