Fort Bend County
Another giant thank you and a hearty Look What You’ve Done! to those of you who donated to Hazel Lundy’s Phone Bank.
It’s paying off. Fort Bend County made the Big Time Nate Silver’s 538 Blog!
The model suggests that several traditionally Republican suburban locales with diversifying and highly educated electorates could be poised to flip and support the Democratic presidential candidate: Orange County, California; Gwinnett County, Georgia; Chester County, Pennsylvania; Fort Bend County, Texas; and Virginia Beach.
The home of Tom DeLay is primed to flip. I knew you’d want to know and if you haven’t had a chance to make a difference in this election, please send Hazel a few dollars at the link above. If you already have, please feel free to leave a note for Hazel and her phone banking gang for making a difference.
Seriously, guys, thank you so much.
This is wonderful news. Thanks to you JJ, Hazel and all contributors.
THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!
1Democracy, yes– not with a great majority of states, counties, and precincts so set in stone that often the other party doesn’t even bother to run someone.
2Debbo: This is what ACTIVE democracy looks like.
Some days ago, Rachel Maddow talked about voting and voter registration and that deadlines for registration were coming and if you didn’t vote you couldn’t whine for the next 4 years. I believe she said ‘If you don’t vote you can’t whine.”
We have a PARTICIPATORY democracy and those who don’t participate weaken it. They should be called out for there lax citizenship at every turn.
3I like this slogan: If you don’t vote, you don’t count.
4good to see VA Beach on that list. the home of Pat Robertson and his Regency University has been a republican bastion at least since I went to school in Norfolk. Donald Trump may well turn out to be the best thing to happen to the Democratic Party, since LBJ signing the Civil Rights acts drove out most of the white supremacists into the waiting arms of the GOP.
5Cpinva, we hope that the “Trump shock” brings good conservatives to their senses and a new reasonable party emerges. If so it will probably rise from the ashes of the current GOP. Or the tea baggers will take it over and continue to take a wrecking ball to our tri-part democracy.
Racism and the other diseases Trump has allowed to come out into the sunlight and are seen as obsessions of the ignorant and mentally unstable and not conservatism. I can’t say that strong enuff. People must quit calling these people conservatives.
6My eldest bro lives in Virginia Beach and is as conservative as you can get. Religiousy, too. Tim La Haye religiousy. If VB goes normal, I bet I will never hear the end of that at our next family reunion.
7Viva Fort Bend! We in northern Virginia – and all over Virginia actually – are working hard to swing Blue!
8The Dream could come true!!!! How wonderful would that be!!! This made my day.
9Great news, but I’m still cynical.
Comparing two races for Fort Bend, 2014 TX Gov and 2012 President, shows that it might just be possible though.
But only if the Democrats have a fierce turnout and the Republics slack off.
Those increasing number of registered voters figures from 2012 to 2014 are significant, it would be interesting to see the 2016 number; which should be floating around now, after new reg has closed Tuesday.
In 2012 the REP’s had a 15K vote advantage out of about 217K votes cast, so aprx a 7% margin.
Can the Dems pull 10% more votes this time, assuming the Reps are static?
.
Below are results from perhaps the best base indicator race, the 2014 TX Gov. It’s about (R)74K-(D)58K, 132K votes, with a 36% turnout.
(the text formatting below may be off when you see it)
FORT BEND (REP) 73,749 (DEM) 56,825 1, 462 416 …… (voting) 132,468 (reg voters) 363,147
(turnout %) 36.48%

.
The 2012 TX Presidential race had almost twice the turnout, and closer results, about (R)116K-(D)101K, 219K votes, with a 65% turnout.:
FORT BEND (REP) 116,126 (DEM) 101,144 1,719 460 2………. (voting) 219,489 (reg voters) 339,694 (turnout %) 64.61%

BTW, I once worked all around Fort Bend (et al).
11I remember when Sugar Land was just a very small town, almost rural to Houston; I used the post office often, Katy too. But, the area had some of the most virulent racists I had ever met/worked with…(and have seen quite a few over the years).
It’s been 10-15 years since in the area, and even then it was unrecognizable with all the growth. Can’t imagine it today.
Minnesota’s 2 Senators are both Democrats. 5 of our 8 Congress people are Democrats. My district is an open seat due to John Kline’s retirement. (Thank you jeeeeebus!) It’s looking very good for Democrat Angie Craig to beat trump-wannabe Jason Lewis. Besides, I’m contributing and working for Angie so how can she lose?! snacilbupeR Eric Paulsen is in a purple District and being challenged by state senator Terri Bonoff in a very close race.
Minnesota will replace at least one snacilbupeR man with a Democratic woman, and possibly 2.
On the other hand, Democratic Congressman Rick Nolan is in another tight race with little rich boy, snacilbupeR Stewie Mills III. 2 years ago Rick beat him in a close race. It’s close again. If there is a Mills Fleet Farm business in your area, don’t shop there. They are snacilbupeR righty bullies.
12Rachel is more genteel than I am.
13My motto is “If you don’t vote, don’t bitch.” That alone is enough to get me to the polls every election.
Trump just pulled his organization out of Virginia! Be still my heart. I am going to work twice as hard during my shift at Hill’s local campaign office this weekend!
14When I first moved to Fort Bend, Tom “The Hammer” DeLay was my rep, sadly. Usually there wasn’t even a Dem on the ballot to vote for. Things have gotten better, but I’m skeptical that it will flip this year. Of course, I live in a little right wing enclave….if it does flip, I figure it will be the Asian folks in Sugar Land. Not to generalize (overly), but since those kids are crushing all the white kids in the class rankings at the high schools, I’m assuming maybe their parents are smarter than the average Fort Bend bear & will vote for Hilz.
