Y’all, Brain Surgery Must Not Be All That Hard

October 07, 2015 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Ben Carson. Sometimes you gotta wonder if this guy’s brain has been introduced to his mouth.

When Carson attacked the President for being political by going to Oregon.  It goes downhill from there.

images“But, Dr. Carson, would you go?” host Brian Kilmeade wondered. “If the people of the community say don’t go, would you still go if you were president on Friday?”

“Probably not,” Carson replied. “I mean, I would probably have so many things on my agenda that I would go to the next one.”

The next one? Would you like to give us a heads up on when that will be?  I mean, if you’re arranging your agenda we’d like to know what date you’re holding for “the next one.”

Well, he slept on it and has decided to take a new tactic.  He’s calling the victims cowards.

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Tuesday that he would have attacked the gunman who killed nine people at an Oregon community college last week.

“I would not just stand there and let him shoot me,” Carson told “Fox and Friends”.

You enormous jackass.  Someone did that. He got shot 7 times.  Tell me something, how about those schoolchildren at Sandy Hook.  Should they have attacked the shooter?

Carson is a jerk, a nincompoop, and a damn son of a mother goat.

  1. Polite Kool Marxist says:

Once brilliant pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson. What happened to him? Seriously, Dr. Ben what happened to you, man?

Now, how about some liability insurance on our weapons? If the mother of the shooter was paying liability insurance, maybe it would have given her pause as to enabling her son with Asperger disorder with developing a fetish for lethal weapons.

  2. Ben Carson proves once again by that statement the depth of his disconnect with reality. POTUS hasn’t the luxury of sticking to the schedule. Cause stuff happens and who you gonna call?

    2
  3. Love your title.

  4. Biggomama says:

Oh, JJ! Don’t be so nice. He’s a rank pinhead and a loud mouthed loon who doesn’t know the difference between an ass and an elbow.

    4
  5. I wonder if the Dr has checked out Alzheimers ?

    5
  6. I think of him as Uncle Ruckus from Boondocks.

    6
  7. Someone referred to this guy as the first brain surgeon to lobotomize himself. I hope he was a good surgeon, because he sucks at being an intelligent human.

    7
  8. Lunargent says:

Despite all Carson’s anti-abortion rhetoric, I’m not sensing much reverence for life, here.

And that whole “Massacres are like streetcars – l’ll just catch the next one” thing?

    Painfully true. But epically uncool.

  9. old quaker says:

It is staggering that one of the finest surgeons in the world (truly) is an idiot outside the hospital. It makes no sense but it is so. Talk about compartmentalizing. It’s easy to be snarky about Carson but even more, it is very sad.

    9
  10. That Other Jean says:

Ben Carson was the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He was a very, very good surgeon. He is not, unfortunately, much good at anything else.

    10
  11. Another Rethug who won’t admit that one of the requirements of being Commander in Chief is to sometimes be Comforter in Chief! Or is that just to sissified for them?

    11
  12. This guy has no sense of compassion nor propriety.
Let’s face it. He just has no sense. Everything that comes out of his mouth is crazy drivel. How can he be so high in the Repug polls? Oh, wait, Michele Bachman was right up there too. boy those baggers like ’em strage.

    12
  13. Susan on the Left Coast says:

Monday night during a Q and A held on his Twitter, a person wrote to him “Twenty children died at Sandy Hook.” Carson responded that he had operated on victims of gun violence and said “but I never saw a body with bullet holes that was more devastating than taking the right to arm ourselves away.”

The triple murder photos… endured as a juror… of a 3-year old boy strapped in car seat blown half by specialized military ammo that fractures into razor like bits upon impact are unavailable for me to send Carson.

Maybe, just maybe the court would let me have a photo of the car that looked like it went through a shredder because of those 100+ bullets fired by a man who was angry at the (dead) parents who teased him about his new haircut. They all were childhood life long friends the killer murdered to keep Carson safe from tyranny.

  14. screecherguy says:

Carson is a jerk, a nincompoop, and a damn son of a mother goat.

He’s far worse than any of those.

    14
  15. Hollyanna says:

Once Dr. Carson stepped outside the OR he should have been muzzled–for his own good. He may have been a gifted surgeon, but he is incompetent in many other areas. The lack of empathy is just the tip of the iceberg, I fear.

    15
  16. Paul Waldman in the WashPost points out that Carson just said what the GOP thinks. No wonder it sounds deranged.

    16
  17. BegoniaBuzzkill says:

Has Carson revealed why he isn’t working anymore other than surgical snafus on his record?

Carson reportedly told a patient “that she might have a tumor. But surgery revealed the lump was actually ‘a sponge he had left in (her) brain.’”

My parents told him they weren’t authorizing him to remove the whole tumor because of the risk,” said Karly. But he did what he goddamned pleased! He tried to remove all of the tumor, and injured my nerves and brain stem. I’ve never fully recovered.” (the tumor was benign.)

    17
  18. Elizabeth Moon says:

Carson has a bad case of Surgeon’s Disease (“I am God because I saved lives”) combined with GOPitis (“My stuff counts; your stuff doesn’t.”)

It’s true that surgeons *must* develop both a big ego and an ability to dissociate from emotions while doing surgery–people without the courage and arrogance to believe that they can in fact cut into someone’s brain and remove that tumor without destroying his/her ability to think and move do not become neurosurgeons. They can’t. It takes that belief in self. And for a black man to succeed at his level took even more determination, even more pushing against all the many things that were against him. He succeeded…and unfortunately, the other people in his life did not succeed in giving him the loving reality checks that surgeons need. So he got this bad case of surgeon’s disease–thinking that “I save lives” means “I know everything anybody needs to know about anything; I am always right; I am the boss of this outfit and what I say goes.” Empathy is for psych units; his job is to find the bad and cut it out, to make himself impervious (because a good surgeon in an operating room IS the captain of the team, MUST be able to command and control, and a good black surgeon will have to be more commanding, more controlling, having come up through hospitals in which white staff (and patients) assumed he was the orderly and handed him a mop.

(I once had the opportunity, during my hospital rotations for paramedic training, to observe possibly a half dozen surgeons in a military hospital. There was a black surgeon who I am sure went far after that: he was by far the best of two I saw on the same day doing the same surgery (gallbladder). Decisive, positive, had the anatomy down perfectly–you can tell, while watching, if someone does, the same way you can tell the difference between a good butcher carving a roast off half a beef and someone inexperienced trying to get a steak off that roast. But he was also extremely brisk, forceful, demanding–and it was clear (seeing him also in the prep area, etc.) that this was his way of dealing with those who doubted his competence because of his color. He was not one of the joking surgeons. Guy in my group got to watch him deal with a major chest wound (I was in the ER that day–so saw the victim arrive; other guy saw him in the OR. Shotgun, close range, in a bar fight; holes in major blood vessels & heart. Guy said he opened the chest, started in, and the victim made it to the ICU (beyond that we had no info.)

Undoubtedly Carson sees the body politic as an exact analogy to the body on the operating table–he is sure he knows what needs to be cut out, what needs to be sutured, and how to do it. He’s wrong, but he’s not

This is not to excuse him now, but to recognize him as a human whose opinions I despise, whose earlier work I admire, someone who proves that humans can be a scary blend of the very good and the very bad, all encased in one skin.

    18
  19. “humans can be a scary blend of the very good and the very bad, all encased in one skin.”

That’s exactly right Elizabeth. “can be”. I’d put Carson in that group, as you have. Trump, Cruz, and some of those other wacked out wingnuts? Nope. No blend there, just a mix of donkey and horse.

    19
  20. Susan on the Left Coast says:

@Elizabeth Moon Am grateful for your info! It helps put perspective on three neurosurgeons I’ve gotten to know up close. (am a bldg. manager in a metropolis)

Of the three, only one has continued being a surgeon. One who quit, is now doing research at UC Berkeley. He told me he quit being a surgeon because he hated the whiny needy patients.

The other who quit glibly stated, he “hates people.” He now runs a consultancy in a tony office downtown. Corporations pay him to stealth observe and test potential hires in order to pick the high functioning psychopaths they desire for CEOs. Takes one to know one?

    20
  21. Yeah, as the old joke(?) goes — Know the difference between a doctor and God? God doesn’t think he’s a doctor. Just sayin’.

    21
  22. john78745 says:

People who become U.S. medical doctors are necessarily great at memorizing. Doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re smart. Ever been to a party with doctors and lawyers in attendance? The only thing that the doctors can talk about, intelligently, is their golf game or last vacation.

    22
  23. SteveTheReturned says:

This ugly blame-the-victim stuff that Carson is shoveling is standard gun nut gospel. On more than one occasion over the years, I have seen entries on talk sites from guncentrics, blaming the Jews for their own Holocaust tragedies, because they weren’t well-armed enough to take on the SS. This is a genuinely sick sociopolitical movement, and Ben Carson is the latest evidence of its vilest thinking. I hope he pays for it in major political capital.

    24
  24. Linda Phipps says:

It’s probably inappropriate to be silly after the good responses by Susan on the Left Coast and Elizabeth Moon, but I can’t shake the mental image of Carson, in a rain of bullets reaching up with his talented hands, grabbing a flying bullet, and cooly throwing it back at the shooter, killing him. He talks like a five year old who wants to be a fireman/astronaut/policeman all at the same time.

    25
  25. Note that operating on a brain requires steady hands and a knowledge of the mechanics of the brain and body. It does not require general intelligence. That’s why robots are getting better at it all the time.

I would rather have Robbie the Robot as President than Ben Carson.

    26
  26. Elizabeth Moon says:

As long as we don’t get HAL, LynnN. Do not want my surgical robot announcing mid-surgery “Sorry…I can’t do that…” in that soft, creepily pleasant voice.

  27. did ya’ll see this report?

don’t rob me, rob the poor schmuck behind the counter

    28
  28. Juanita Jean says:

Holy cow, sgray, that is so damn weird. Has Carson been checked for a brain tumor? Seriously – has he?

    29
  29. might not be a tumor – might just be one of those pesky sponges

    http://gawker.com/report-ben-carson-once-left-a-sponge-in-a-patients-bra-1735224497

(ps – popeyes story has now hit on dailykos)

  30. Ben even discussed on – of all places – TMZ

    http://www.tmz.com/2015/10/07/ben-carson-oregon-shooting-attack-gunman-chuckle-laugh/

and most of the discussion centered on his propensity to giggle after such statements

    31
  31. Isn’t that “Son of a MOTHERLESS goat”?

Also – I was listening to a PBS interview yesterday where Carson was answering “would you let the U.S default on our nation debt” questions (asked three times) with “I would cut spending.
I don’t think he knows what the debt OR debt ceiling is.

    *************

“I would provide the kind of leadership that says, ‘Get on the stick guys, and stop messing around, and cut where you need to cut, because we’re not raising any spending limits, period,'” said Carson, who added he supports 3% to 4% across the board cuts to the federal budget.

“I’m gonna try one more time, sir,” asked Ryssdal. “This is debt that’s already obligated. Would you not favor increasing the debt limit to pay the debts already incurred?”

“What I’m saying is what we have to do is restructure the way that we create debt,” Carson replied. “I mean if we continue along this, where does it stop? It never stops.”

Indeed it is, Tommy T. Thank heavens above that my paying jobs involve editors. 🙂

  33. Marge Wood says:

You reckon he’s ever lived in or visited for long time anywhere with different lifestyles, like “I’m driving at night because I had to get $2000 repair done on our plumbing and I’m trying to not borrow money again.” Actual quote.

    34
  34. Susan on the Left Coast says:

Victim’s daughter of Sandy Hook massacre has voiced outrage regarding wanna’ be President, Faster than a Speeding Bullet Carson.

“My mother was an elementary school principal, not a marine who signed up to be on the front lines of a shootout.”

Witnesses said that before she was shot dead she yelled, “Shooter, stay put!” and in doing so saved lives.

“My mother did not just ‘stand there’ and let herself get shot,” (or redirect the shooter to kill someone else)

    35
  35. two crows says:

Fortunately for Ben C, the most lethal thing that’s ever been pointed at him is a camera. So he can sound all brash and brave without risking any real, lethal consequences. How very lucky he is.

Except, when you think about it, a camera [or a microphone] in his vicinity CAN be a pretty dangerous thing.

    36
  36. just saw this in a piece at raw story

“If you had to vote for one of the Republican candidates, if someone held a gun to your head because Ben Carson said (to) point it that way, who would you vote for if you had to vote for one of the main 12?” Noah asked.
