Oh My Goodness

October 23, 2018 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Give me a few minutes to catch my breath and figure out some numbers but yesterday broke all records of first day voting in Texas.  People actually stood in line.

Beto came to three different area of the county in two days and drew enormous crowds.  The funniest tweet I saw was from Police Chief Art Acevedo in Houston over Trump’s rally for Ted Cruz.  Trump kept telling people that 100,000 people asked for tickets to the arena that holds 18,000.  By 5:30, the Chief wasn’t seeing it.

Yeah, those are two of the first pictures he chose.  This is Houston after all.

More to come …

  1. Is Houston an oasis within Texas? It did look pretty good way up here, hosting the Katrina refugees.

Yes, Houston is very blue. Fort Bend County (my adopted county) abuts Houston on the southwest. It is the second most diverse county in the nation. Once we flip, Texas flips. Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and Brownsville are also blue. You’re fine in Texas as long as you stay in the big cities.

It would be fun to pack a Trump rally with people who would boo, and chant “Lock Trump Up!”

I expect the 100,000 ticket requests came from Russian troll farms… or the voices in Trump’s head.

  4. Didn’t someone here (you, JJ?) suggest we all request tickets and then not show up? It could have been the latest big wave.

  5. And the election board in Juneau worked out how voters who marked their ballots for Walker could legally and correctly change their votes to Begich, so we’re feeling happy about that up here too. Never a dull moment these days.

However, I’m as excited (maybe more so) for what is happening in Texas. That’s all thanks to you.

JJ I agree about staying in big cities. The smaller the town, the smaller the mind.

  7. Just a note from someone in a small rural town outside Houston… my Beto sign has lasted longer than my Bernie sign did. But my Beto sign is GLUED to my fence and under a street light. Maybe that helps or maybe people in the ‘hood are figuring things out. We can hope that much for them.

Linda Phipps: have mercy on those of us who live in smaller towns. We work hard at keeping our mind and keeping it open to progressive possibilities. It’s where the blue meets the red line here, so send us a lifeline and be kind. We often have to hide out, not speak up and move in the shadows to survive.

  9. JJ,
When I was periodically often (cursed) to work in and around the Houston area (I was based in Deep S TX), 1970’s-~2002, Fort Bend County was very rural, Katy was a very tiny town if you might remember that.
Some of my (Houston) coworkers lived out there in FB, and some of them were among the most racist people I’ve ever met, bar none (and as an old Anglo I’ve seen a lot).
I can’t help but wonder how those guys are coping with the modern FB.
