I Have Very Cool Friends With Enough Courage to Go Down the Cliffs of Hell Without a Safety Belt

October 29, 2013 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

I want to tell you about my friend Karen Wilkerson.  She lives gaily in Tyler, Texas.  You know, where Louie Gohmert is her congressman and a whole bundle of other crazy people represent her in Austin.

When I say she lives gaily, I mean that literally.  Karen is a smart, gorgeous, funny, gay woman.  It’s not so hard to be a gay person in Houston or Dallas, but holy crap, Karen is a gay person in the Free State of Tyler, Texas.

But, do you think that bothers her?  Nope.  This sign makes me so damn happy that I do a little dance every time I see it.

Karen says, “It’s been up a few years. Several bullet holes in one of them (in a tight pattern, I hasten to add) and the other went missing once, but we got a replacement from the state. I’m always surprised that nobody throws stuff at us when we do cleanup. Actually, our stretch of the road stays pretty clean compared to others. Hmmm…”

Karen would fight a rattlesnake with one hand tied behind her back and give the snake three bites head start.  It makes me proud that there are people like her in Texas.   That’s why I stay here.

Be social and share!

Surprising they haven’t been accidently run over or shot by mistake. Texas-where guns and idjets are King and all else is targets.(my perception)

  2. Bravo!

  3. I’ll bet the jerks who shot up their sign are the same ones who pitch their trash out on the highway.

Good for Karen and her friends—more power to ’em!

  4. I also love the sign in Colorado Springs, (near the Focus on the Family and the Air Force Academy signs) for an LGBT group. Great placement.

@ Texas Trailer Park Trash- #3- That’s a really safe bet and you know why people shoot at road signs? They don’t move, and they don’t shoot back. I’m going to have to try to remember JJ’s statement about fighting the rattlesnake.

  6. How inspiring! There should be more groups putting up those signs for red-necks to shoot at, like Turn Texas Blue. That one might look like swiss cheese.

  7. She is even more impressive in person! 🙂 Thanks for giving those of us in BFE hope.

  8. I see Abbott is going for an emergency injunction against the ruling yesterday. How much money has this man spent on futile exercises?
How much more money could be spent feeding those small precious babies instead of on rulings?

OK. A history lesson from ole Glen the dinosaur.

Back about 1989 or so I was the Lobbyist for the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas. So I was casually going through all state programs and seeing if they discriminated against the gay.

I asked the Texas Highway Department if gay people could pick up trash. Well, NOOOO, they said, “We don’t do political groups”. I then had to drag my ass down to their next public meeting and point out that the “Republican Women’s Clubs of Texas” had adopted stuff all over Texas.

So after much bs the State Department of Highways decides that queers can pick up trash.

It was only at that point (after I made the point and won the battle) that I had to find some gay people willing to actually do it.

Moral: Pick your battles. You might win and have to do the grunge work.

  12. I’ve been in the Tyler area almost 20 years and never seen this- where is it? I wanna see it just to stand there and grin…I remember when they performed the Laramie Project- it was extremely tense and almost didn’t happen due to the public uproar.
Tyler TX regressive atmosphere is the reason we drive 3 hours one way for a home school group that believes in EVILution and dinosaurs- the huge home school group in Tyler requires a statement of Faith and letter from your pastor to join.

Damn good on you,Glen Maxey. A rilly large thank you to you and all those people who do the necessary dirty work to advance the causes of justice and equality as well as dignity for all. Take a well deserved bow. I’m applauding as well as my arthritic, torn up shoulders allow.
