How ‘Bout We Put John Lewis In The Genuine American Hero Hall of Fame

Take a look at this total awesomeness.

Any time I start to lose faith in my political party, I take pride that I am in the same party as this man.

Thank you, Congressman, thank you.

Mired in their shame, Republicans turned off the camera but they cannot turn off the constant shine of John Lewis.

Be social and share!

Another assault on Freedom of the Press by the snacilbupeR. Louis Gohmert must be suffering without the rolling C-SPAN coverage to cover his crazy.

Silly snacilbupeR are still living in the 1950s or wherever their heads are at these days. In keeping with their science denial modern technology escapes them. To their st00pid there is an antidote – social media.

Kudos to Rep Lewis. Keep the pictures and tweets coming!

  2. Old Mayfly says:

That’s my Congressman!!! Very proud of John Lewis.

  3. BarbinDC says:

    This is indeed AWESOME!

Between this an the filibuster in the Senate last week, maybe, maybe, maybe the snacilbupeR will see the light.

Yeah, I know: Hope springs eternal.

    3
  4. And if they don’t see the light, they will see us coming for their jobs!

    4
  5. I’m proud that standing behind John Larson, and moving to speak third, is our Steny Hoyer from Maryland. Go, Steny!

  6. 92% of Americans want expanded background checks.

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/20/politics/cnn-gun-poll/index.html

Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein’s amendment, which would have allowed the attorney general to deny firearms to people on the terrorist watch list, was defeated with 47 votes in favor and 53 votes against. But the 47 senators who voted in favor of the bill represent roughly 56% of the American population. And though the bill sponsored by Democrat Chris Murphy to require background checks on all gun sales was also defeated, with only 44 votes in favor, these 44 senators also represent roughly 56% of the population….

Previous gun control provisions have suffered similar fates. A 2015 bill, proposed after the shooting deaths in San Bernardino, would have extended FBI background checks to every gun purchase, including currently unregulated gun shows and online sales. The bill failed to pass, with just 48 yes votes to 52 no votes, though the 48 senators that voted in favor of the bill represented a full 58% of the American population.

We could use a few more like him.

    7
  8. Absolutely!!! He makes me proud to be a Democrat.

    8
  9. A genuine American Hero.

Thank you John Lewis….. for who you are….. and what you do.

    9
  10. Brilliant!

    10
  11. Aggieland Liz says:

The problem, Rhea (as you know!), is that the NRA and other related PACs give them 58% of their money. So the people who they are meant to represent no longer count – thanks to the Citizens United case, I’m afraid!

    11
  12. JAKvirginia says:

    Rhea and Aggieland Liz:

The time for talk and debate is over. A majority of Rs, Ds, and Is want gun control. America has spoken. Those in Congress who do nothing do it for one reason only: they just don’t care. End of story.

    THEY JUST DON’T CARE.

    12
  13. W. C. (Pete) Peterson says:

And right up there in front of God and Everybody is my Representative Donna Edwards. I’m going to miss her next year.

    13
  14. Polite Kool Marxist says:

I don’t expect much from Amodei, Hardy and Heck (Rs Hopeless-NV). Hoping Dina Titus (D-NV) doesn’t pull a Heidi HeadUpHerA (D-NDumba$$). Any Dem or Indy who doesn’t work to get this done needs to run with the snacilbupeR.

    14
  15. Susan on the Left Coast says:

The sit-in is still going on. CSPAN is showing it even though GOP shut ordered them down. The rules that no cameras or film allowed when the Senate is recessed are being ignored by our brave Senators. Spunky good folks at CSPAN are airing the live stream which one of our Senators set up on a web site. If you can’t see CSPAN, you can see it live streamed here: https://www.periscope.tv/w/1OyKAlbgeQDxb

    15
  16. Susan on the Left Coast says:

sorry about the typo regarding cameras ordered shut down by the GOP. “They can shut down the microphone but they can’t shut down our voices” This one: “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired but I am not soul tired….” <– voices of heroes.

    16
  17. I was part of the sit-ins in the 60’s. Had to work behind the scenes raising $$ and planning and so forth. Saw a lot of good decent men go off on the buses and into the segregated businesses and only wished I could go with them. God bless John!

    17
  18. Elizabeth Moon says:

Have we celebrated yet that Democrat Beto O’Rourke of Texas put the sit down on a Facebook feed hissownself when Rand cut the C-Span cameras?

It’s there on a screen-cap in a tweet I picked up from someone I follow on Twitter: “LIVE Facebook video from Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX)” at 4:12 ET.

    Give the man some applause.

    18
  19. Elizabeth Moon says:

https://t.co/3jPOos4IFp (Finally figured out how to copy the link of the screen cap mentioned above so I could post it here.

    19
  20. maryelle says:

John Lewis is inspiring. We, the voters, should take up the sit-in during their recess, blocking access to their offices all over the country. This could spark a resurgence of the Civil Rights movement, this time for gun control. Who do I contact to get this organized?

    20
  21. Polite Kool Marxist says:

    Live-stream:

    http://www.c-span.org/video/?411624-1/watch-democrats-continue-house-sitin-gun-violence&live=

maryelle, maybe the Congressional Black Caucus: http://www.cbcfinc.org/ or BlackLivesMatter: http://isreview.org/issue/96/black-lives-matter if your local Democratic organization is not responsive to your fantastic suggestion. You are so correct; we can’t allow these snacilbupeR to have another recess, when they have been on a 7.5 year vacation from doing any work for our country.

    #PassTheBill or don’t come home!

    21
  22. PKM: Don’t know if you saw the last John Oliver show or not, but it was right there with what you said about science denial. I’d never heard of the Dickey Wicker amendment, but thanks to repugnicans, we can’t even spend federal money on STUDYING gun violence. Evidently another provision covers stem cell research as well. So let’s see. Climate change. Evolution, anything logical, nope waste of money. Unless of course King James covered it. Then alls we gotta do is pray on it.

    22
  23. More Republicans (90%) than Democrats (85%) want to keep people on the terrorist watch list from buying guns (because Republicans think they’re all Muslims, which to them is even worse than gun control) – – but yet, the NRA gets the final say on the issue?

Thank you John Lewis, for keeping this issue in the public eye.

    23
  24. Polite Kool Marxist says:

P.P., comedians are my main news source along with some of the better sources like the WMDBS. Yeah, the Dickey Wicker amendment that allowed the home grown brigades of ammosexuals to ‘arm up’ without the restraints of ‘manning up’ and actually earning the right to fire military grade weapons in actual real time combat.

Via Hatewatch, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) features excellent in-depth articles as to the activities of the skinheads, Sovereign ‘citizens’ and their hate inspired inbred cousins. https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch

Doctors are expected to report signs of child abuse like unexplained bruising, etc. But they’re not allowed to ask if the child lives in a home with weapons, or if the weapons are stored safely out of the reach of children. Again, how many children must die, before reasonable questions can be asked? By snacilbupeR “logic” it’s intrusive to fence swimming pools, prosecute those who leave children unattended to suffocate in vehicles, and praise the Lord that their 2nd Amendment Freedumb be infringed upon to protect children.

Cars and swimming pools are better regulated by the free market they claim to love. It’s called insurance. Safe pool and vehicle owners are rewarded by lower insurance rates. Don’t “see” why the same principles cannot apply to gun ownership.

As a native of GA, I am so proud to list GREAT Georgians: Jimmy Carter, Julian Bond and OMG, the wonderful John Lewis.

    25
  26. Opinionated Hussy says:

Proud to have known Cong. Lewis back when I was a reporter in his home territory. He is and will always be one of my heroes, as well as a genuinely nice man.

    26
  27. Li’l Paulie says the sit-in is just a publicity stunt. Yeah, like the ’60s sit-ins didn’t start something! You know he’s dying inside ’cause he can’t control the message. But one speaker did remind us of Irish Alzheimers: you can forget anything but a grudge. There will be payback. Just watch.
When all that is being asked for is a up and down vote, and the R’s won’t even accept that, you know they’re running scared. Cowards.

    27
  28. Old Quaker says:

John Lewis is a great man. With determination and mental and physical courage he has fought the good fight for decades. This is a better country because of his hard work and witness.

    28
  29. That Other Jean says:

Whatever it took to be a Freedom Rider, John Lewis still has it, in spades. The sit-in and that wonderful speech made news, no matter how quickly the Republicans turned off the cameras. Go, Democrats! Thank you, Mr. Lewis. Well done!

    29
  30. Zyxomma says:

My Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, joined the fun.

    30
  31. lyntilla says:

The filibuster and this sit-in make me wonder if the Democrats have been watching the movie Serenity. “I aim to misbehave” Also, “You can’t stop the signal” Loving my party.

    31
  32. Aggieland Liz says:

Hi JAKVa-I continue to debate, cajole, jump up and down, AND encourage people to vote! Ignoring people isn’t going to help them, and some of them are just fuzzy-not good at analysis, ya know? So I ask them questions and engage them, in a friendly fashion, not snarky or rude, not patronizing, just WHY are you so against X? Because many of the normal everyday folk don’t KNOW why, because they have never really thought about it, they just liked the sound byte! (Full disclosure, I don’t waste time on abortion, I KNOW all the pro life talking points and convictions, but in our free country, the Constitution negates all that. Period.) If you want to read a great treatise on why we can’t even have the conversation, wander over to Stonekettle Station and read “Bang Bang Crazy” – I think Mr Wright is up to part 7 or 8 now. Very distressing, but I am not giving up! I have to keep trying.

    32
  33. John Lewis is one of my heroes. I want to be like him when I grow up.

I like maryelle’s idea. This is one of the many times I have been proud of my senators, Amy Klobuchar and AL Franken, and proud to be a Democrat.

    33
  34. DEMOCRATS KICK ELEPHANT A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    34
  35. Elizabeth Moon says:

Still going. Not giving up. for anyone up and interested, there’s a recent update from Mother Jones:
    http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/06/nobillnobreak-sit-still-going-strong-house

GOP’s cut off C-Span cameras, wifi, microphones…but Dems are tech savvy and use smuggled-in smartphones to connect with outside. Big crowd outside in support, too.

    35
  36. They put John Lewis’s speech to music over at NPR http://www.wnyc.org/story/remix-congressman-john-lewis-speech-congress-gun-control/ It has a good beat, I could sit to it.

    36
  37. two crows says:

    So this happened:
Louie Gohmert couldn’t let this happen without weighing in. So he walked into the well of the House and started shouting. And walked out with egg all over his face.

He yelled, “You know who does all this shooting and killing right? It’s radical Islamists! That’s who!” [Patently untrue but Gohmert never has let such details stop him.]

Louie being Louie, however, hadn’t stopped to think through the rational solution to his rant. The Democrats didn’t try to argue with him about the honesty of his shrill — they just started yelling back, “NO FLY/NO BUY! WHY DO YOU WANT TO LET TERRORISTS BUY GUNS?”

Thus the egg dripping off his chin.
Louie does just keep stepping in it, doesn’t he?

    37
  38. two crows says:

btw — Here we are at 10:25 AM the next day and Congress has been adjourned for the break [why am I not surprised?] BUT! The Democrats are still there — still sitting in — and still being covered by the news.

omg. The snacilbupeR are not going to like the optics of this! They simply. Will. Not.

Caught between the voters and the NRA. Rock, meet hard place.

    38
  39. Linda Phipps says:

I suggested him for Mount Rushmore.

    39
  40. Corinne Sabo says:

I LOVE John Lewis. Met him here in S.A. as he autographed his book Walking with the Wind to me.

Glen Beck claims to be more of a civil rights leader than John Lewis.
