Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs

Here on the Left Coast, we normally have low key elections, because face it, the outcomes of most races here in deep blue California is already known.

Not here in the “Fighting 41st”. Here in CA CD-41, the outcome of this year’s congressional race is not assured. Right now registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in a newly redistricted congressional district. This is a first for incumbent Ken Calvert (R-CD 42). Democrat Will Rollins, a young energetic former federal prosecutor, is putting up a credible fight against this 30-year incumbent who has skated through 14 campaigns with large R turnouts. And so as that goes, Calvert’s crew is playing dirty now.

Will Rollins’ campaign signs, far and few between as it is, are disappearing from their stakes and fences at an alarming rate. Of The 16 signs that I have personally posted around town, half have now gone missing. I did find one in the dirt, and another covered up by a 4 X 4 sign (not Calvert’s).

See? You can see the upper left corner of a Rollins sign that was covered up by a city council candidate’s sign.

So a grass-roots visibility campaign was initiated by Rollins campaign volunteers with a call for donations. They’re going to need just shy of 2 grand to buy 50 4 X 8s to post in high visibility areas.

I just sent them my dead presidents. You can also donate to the new push for visibility by going here. You can also send them a check via snail mail at the address that is given here (scroll to the bottom). Write “signs” on the check memo line and it’ll be used for signs.

Be social and share!

Ah, yes. Welcome to local politics as we know it here in the Purple Places in the country. Signs ‘make’ the campaign here, and after this many elections in the trenches my Spousal Unit and I know all the best places – high visibility, and placement where they won’t be mowed down by the DOT crews.

…and where they are routinely replaced by the opponent’s signs. Others are simply covered over (your photo is priceless), stolen, stomped on, run over. It does reflect the “quality” of the opposition.

Local politics can be a cut-throat business, but damn, people ought to leave other people’s signs alone. I’ll check my bank balance and see if I can send Mr. Rollins some bucks for his more visible signs.

  4. Will be happy to do so. I hate Republican sleazy tricks.

Here in central OR there are a number of farms/ranches that post the big signs for their favorite authoritarian figure which many of us use as a guide re, who not to vote for when the time comes

Half Empty, we feel your pain. btw Jane and I are your neighbors from Nevaduh. Thanks for the heads up because what happens in CA directly affects us. We for sure do not want any Qcumber conservative playing with matches. We’ll send a check to support Will.

Slightly related so not totally off topic, we have our concerns that our “media” proclaimed blue state of NV which is a purple mess might swing back red. We thought “for sure” 2022 was the year to topple Qcumber goofball Mark Amodei from our congressional district. That fight is too close to call. Meanwhile our Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is not the shoo in she should be versus entitled capitalist and all-around putz Adam Laxalt. For fun enter either Adam Laxalt or Danny Tarkanian into your browser. Lordy. If the results are not nearly as insane as the words Donald Trump in 2015, 2022 elections are the election of choice between democracy and ideocracy.

  8. In my neighborhood, there are Blake Masters signs all over the road median. The evil twin in me would like to spray white paint over (this is just a thought without true intention) the letter s in this bass turd’s last name and write in “bator” at the end.

TFG is showing up in Mesa this weekend for the GQP loonies’ pageant.

Papa @8, our deepest sympathies. Lordy. The contrast between Mesa and Tempe persists. As a boy at ASU my turf was Tempe. But the snowbirds and ‘conservatives’ nearby in Mesa were a spectacle of a clown show. They didn’t get that driving their golf carts on public roads was not merely a nuisance but a hazardous nuisance, or that bike lanes were not for golf carts. That was “then.” Now the conservatives have devolved to a brain and biohazard invite the biggest biohazard of all, TFG. The EPA should “step up” and ground all flights into Chandler Municipal Airport. Then again if the f8cking moron** and his entourage are so stupid as to fly into Phoenix Intl., may the Superstition Highway live up to its name.

  10. Money is good but if you’ve more time than money (i.e., retired) https://votefwd.org actually has data to show that their approach works (letters to registered Dems or Dem-leaning not likely to vote). The engineer in me appreciates that they do studies to determine the effectiveness of different types of messaging. There are a ton of addresses left and the hardest part is choosing which to writer for. Sorry CD-41 is not on the list, but lots of battleground districts are including nearby to me CT-05 where an election denier is running against Jahnna Hanes.
