Well, Dang, I Didn’t Expect This

It looks like the Supreme court did some good stuff.

CREW – the good guys – fought for our right to know who is funding our elections.  The good guys won.

… effective immediately, anyone making more than $250 in express advocacy ads — ads that tell viewers who to vote for or against — must now disclose the identities of all contributors who gave more than $200 in a year. They must also identify who among those contributors earmarked their contributions for express ads. Because of this decision, the contributors for a major category of dark money spending this fall will have to be disclosed to the public.

So now the Klan has to take off their hoods and show their faces, as do all the folks who believe that buying elections should be done in secret.

Alfredo over at the Dairy Queen says this is a BFD and we toasted Blizzards to it last night.

  1. Yup! Thats a damn good one! JJ and Alfredo, here’s one more.
Late in June the Supreme Court released a decision on incomplete court notices handed out by ICE et al. to various and sundry people deemed undocumented in this country. Well, the notices were ineffective, null and void inasmuch as none of them contained court date, time and place. Per the Supremes this was a definite violation of the law and anyone who got one of these notices was off the hook, especially for deportation. DOJ howled like a jungle full of monkeys about this insisting that all that stupid sort of info was sent out much later. Well, “later” is vague and courts sure do hate vague stuff. The Supremes are sticking by their decision and a lot of people who had been here for decades and still trying to get either residential or full citizenship can stay, along with the more newly arrived who ICE thinks should be booted even if they do not have a criminal record. Note: the confusion on the part of many is they think illegal entry is a major felony. Nope. Its a civil matter.

  2. Omg! The Supremes did something right? And, with maggie’s good news, that’s TWO! What IS the world coming to?

Now all we gotta do is show Kavenaugh the door. Come on, Senate, CAVE! And while you’re at it, don’t get your act together till late January. There’s a good little house. You know, in your heart of hearts, that no one Trump nominates will do the country right, so STOP HIM!

Your usual mantra of putting party before country doesn’t even apply in this case. Trump isn’t one of you and you know it — so stop treating him as if he is.

  4. As I tell conservatives who decry this as “speech chilling”, the late Justice Scalia was all for full disclosure of donors. He may not have been for donation limits, but he wanted to know who was doing the donating.

  5. Shucks! The late Justice Scalia, a member of the Federalist Society, even backed Obama on various things. Learning that nearly blew my hair off. Of course, the tea partiers et al do not want to hear about that! For them it is fake news even if printed in a Federalist Society paper.

  6. I tried to think of a down side to this and couldn’t. I don’t mind anybody knowing who I gave money to– I’m happy to wave those flags. I’m very leery of those who won’t, especially if they gave a helluva lot more money than I did.

  7. I don’t know which of you I agree with the most. All of you! I was shocked as well.

  8. This is why they need kavanaugh on the scotus.
Only reason this happened is the court is split 4-4 right now. Actually more like 4 blind ideologues voting their political masters will and 1 moderates lean towards business ( breyer) and 3 open minded justices with progressive leanings. Kavanaugh would make it 5, a majority, of idelogues, justice and law be damned. All they will do is wait for the koch’s et.al. make it clear what they want from their trained pets.
At least arguements will be shorter. All one side would have to do is stand up and state the 1% are for this and the case would be over.
If kavanaugh gets appointed this judgement is gone.
