Weekend Fun

October 29, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

The weekend in Nashville, Tennessee, a group held a rally protesting a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest.  The statue is on private land but is on the interstate highway and can’t be avoided.  It is damn ugly.

The statue was designed by the founder of the The League of the South, a white nationalist organization, and is a grotesque work of art 25 feet in height.  The owner of the statue, Bill Dorris, says the statue is not racist and calls slavery a form of “social security” for African Americans

Okay, I think people have the right to put whatever they want on their property.  I’m saying this as a woman whose husband put a professionally designed 25 foot banner in front of our house in a very Republican neighborhood when Barack Obama was elected president.  Both times.

I also understand why someone would want to protest something this racist and this damn ugly.  Honey, this thing is so damn ugly that just walking by it will make your clothes wrinkle.

But, liberals just don’t know how to do this stuff.  This is a rare case where there’s a more productive solution.  How ’bout protesting with signs that say Nathan Bedford Forrest honest-to-God was really that ugly and was probably some kind of space alien on cocaine but white people love him even though he obviously did not have one pure gene in his body.  And we need to honor deformed horses in Tennessee, by gawd.

But, I need to show you how it’s being protested by a man who is obviously after my own heart and means oh so well, but ends up being … huh?

You can see the big one here.

Ok, I get that you welcome African Americans, people from Mexico, gays, Jews, Christians and transexuals.  You don’t welcome the Klan, Nazis, confederates, statues to Nathan Bedford Forrest, and … Tom Brady?

Tom Brady?

Really?  It’s kinda like, “Oh hell, while we’re at it, Tom Brady can go screw himself.”

Be social and share!

May as well cover all the bases while you can! LOL LOL LOL

  2. I saw an interview where he said he just hates Tom Brady and the Pats. Haters gonna hate.

    2
  3. Maybe the pic of Brady is shorthand for Showboat Patriots?

    3
  4. I really appreciated the counter-protester in TN yesterday, offering free genetic testing to the white supremacists marching there. He was so thoughtful, he even brought his own bullhorn, so they (and the news media) could actually hear him. Clever sod.

  5. Frank McCormick says:

Ah, come on. I took it as a twisted sense of humor. Good for him! After all, he was the one who had to stand in front of that statue. It was probably his sense of humor that got him through the day .

    5
  6. Who the heck is Tom Brady?
    .
The free genetic testing would certainly shake up a lot of those one-drop whitey-tighties, eh?

I wonder if 23andMe, Ancestry, and the other genetic testers check for IQ too?
Just asking… It sure would be interesting to see the typical Teabagger Trump-thumper cohort’s aggregate IQ numbers, wouldn’t it (“aggregate” as in ‘rocks’)?

  7. Jane & PKM says:

Sandridge, Brady is a Patriot rumored to prefer playing with his balls soft. Guess that’s not to be confused with those Darwin winners who prefer playing with no balls.

    7
  8. Not saying Tom Brady is up there with the Nazis and KKK, but if he and Bill Belichick stayed away, that would be a good thing.

I read an article a while back about a genealogy library in the south. One employee said that when some people discover that they had African-American ancestors, “you just about have to call 911.”

If I found that out, I’d just hope to heck it was voluntary on their part. If it was, whoopee for them in backwoods Virginia.

  9. SteveTheReturned says:

So….did Nathan Bedford Forrest enjoy wearing dresses? Because that’s what that ugly statue seems to depict. I don’t have any particular problem with guys donning dresses….but I’m guessing General Forrest’s remaining fans don’t share my enlightened viewpoint.

    9
  10. Is this the protest where the counter-protesters outnumbered the racists etc.? If so, good show! As for the way Nathan Bedford Forrest is dressed – or rather his statue – the coat design for rebel uniforms way back when did have a rather voluminous “skirt” that made it possible to ride a horse and still keep your whatever warm.

    10
  11. Sandridge says:

    SteveTheReturned,
“wearing dresses”, you must be a city type.
That style long coat is called a ‘drover coat’, or duster. It’s been around a long time, and particularly with cavalry troops.
Agree that that statue is horse apple ugly though, if the fool paid a commission to the ‘sculpturer’ of that monstrosity he got shafted.

I’ve noticed its’ resurgence locally with ‘western wear’ dressers the last couple of decades, whether they have horses or not. I have one somewhere in a closet, been years since I did any riding though.

Although the last few years around here I barely remember needing to wear a jacket or coat in ‘winter’. It did get to 35deg this morning though, very weird weather when you’re used to 80-90’s through January.

  12. Jane & PKM says:

More statues of women are needed. This wonderful lady should be first:

    http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/2017/10/i-think-i-have-new-hero.html

It would be the perfect piece of art to adorn the entrance to Donnie’s ‘library.’

    12
  13. That monument is BEYOND butt-ugly. I’m surprised the county hasn’t made them take it down, just for the sheer gawdawfulness of it. The heck with the politics of the thing, just the sheer aesthetics should get that thing pushed off the nearest cliff. Who was the sculptor? A first-semester community college art student?

    13
  14. Tilphousia says:

Although I’m familiar with the type of coat shown on the statue, it still look as though that “artist” thought old Nathan was cross dressing. In fact it almost looks as though he’s trying for a side saddle. But the model for the horse needs to sue.

    14
  15. I think all Confederate statues should be designed by the person who made this one. Then let white supremacists have as many monuments as they want. Looking at that horse, and rider, the reason the South lost the Civil War would be self evident.

    15
  16. That is a seriously fugly statue. Did he really look like that? Maybe the sculptor was a Northerner.

    16
  17. It just hit me. The genius of the sculptor is easy to miss. Until you realize who his inspiration was. Gary Larson.

    17
  18. Charles R Phillips says:

Tom Brady is a cheater. He plays for a team run by a master cheater. That’s why he’s included; true fans of the spot hate cheaters.

    18
  19. I can’t tell if there’s a saddle on that horse but there’s certainly no bridle or reins. Does Nathan control the horse by telepathy?

    19
  20. @Charles R Phillips

    +1

    20
  21. Oh come on.

If you don’t like the Patriots, or their coaches/QB, fine.

But please don’t put them in the same category with those racist fools. They aren’t the Yawkey era Rod Sox…

    21
  22. I always thought that statute’s head was the model for (or modeled from) the nutcracker in the Christmas ballet.

    22
  23. I LOVE that sign, in part b/c Tom Brady is included with the Nazis and KKK.

    23
  24. Linda Phipps says:

I worked in an elementary school – I had students who could do a better job at designing a statue using play-doh. Perhaps some of the “rejected” Trump wall prototypes can be shipped there to erect around that abomination.

    24
  25. TexasEllen says:

Perhaps that dreadful statue is a true representation of art appreciation by White Supremacists. Their perception of reality is so warped, that sucker may look great to them. Whoever cast that sucker must have laughed all the way to the bank.

    25
  26. I’m not a giant football fan, but ever since Tom Brady and the Patriots cheated their way to a championship, my favorite team is any team that beats them — and I might add that Brady is a big fan of Trump, as is the coach. I wish all three of the above an early retirement to a prison cell.
