The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same…

January 01, 2017 By: El Jefe Category: Dammit!, Here's the Deal

About Republicans:

They approve of the American farmer — but they are willing to help him go broke.

They stand four-square for the American home — but not for housing.

They are strong for labor — but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights.

They favor a minimum wage — the smaller the minimum the better.

They indorse educational opportunity for all — but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools.

They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine — for people who can afford them.

They approve of Social Security benefits — so much so that they took them away from almost a million people.

They believe in international trade — so much so that they crippled our reciprocal trade program, and killed our International Wheat Agreement.

They favor the admission of displaced persons — but only within shameful racial and religious limitations.

They consider electric power a great blessing — but only when the private power companies get their rake-off.

They say TVA is wonderful — but we ought never to try it again.

They condemn “cruelly high prices” — but fight to the death every effort to bring them down.

They think the American standard of living is a fine thing — so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people.

And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.

Now, my friends, that is the Wall Street Republican way of life. But there is another way — there is another way — the Democratic way, the way of the Democratic Party.

Who said it?  Harry Truman, October 13, 1948.  So there.

Be social and share!

  2. “They approve of Social Security benefits — so much so that they took them away from almost a million people.” But no word on them eliminating the separate federal retirement system!!!

  3. One “little” change: And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they BOUGHT IT.

  4. Really admired the man. Saw him upclose one time. It was the inauguration of JFK. I was in the main lobby of the Mayflower Hotel waiting for a friend to arrive. Plenty of people around to make it terrifically interesting. A big time union leader arrived through the front door complete with entourage. That caused quite a stir as everyone made a little space, then he was gone. Next came a little man in a camel colored coat and a grey-ish hat. The glasses and the highly confident stance made everyone turn around, and there he was, HST his own self.I swear the air in the lobby started crackling! Did not notice any security around him. He got a much wider path than the union leader. One in a million.

  5. That’s our future.

  6. the only thing that’s changed about the republican party is that it has become more overtly racist/misogynist/greedy/xenophobic/anti-Semitic since Truman’s time.

with his “Southern Strategy”, Nixon simply completed that which LBJ had started, by signing all the civil rights bills. the racists of the Democratic Party easily transitioned over to the republican party.

  7. L'Angelomisterioso says:

@ el Jefe-Harry said he did not give the Snacilbupers hell: He just told the truth and they thought it was hell. El Jefe, they had to do away with the International Wheat Agreement because, among other subsidiary effects it feeds the less affluent classes of several nations. Then, too, our participation puts us in direct competition with the Russians, especially Ukranians.

  8. L’Angelomisterioso, I remember that quote and I love it! That’s what we need to do, tell the truth – over and over and over endlessly. As more and more people come to regret their votes for the cocksplat their hearing will markedly improve.

Time and snacilbupeR assholery are on our side.

  9. I think Dems often lose because they over-explain things instead of going for an emotional appeal.

There are two phrases I won’t to see every day in the next four years.
    1. Every time the Repubs talk about cutting government spending, the Dems should respond with “the Trump Recession” and add little to that. Massive cuts in government spending probably will cause a recession and you know they’re going to blame it on Obama. We need a preemptive strike.
    2. Every time Repubs rattle their sabers the Dems should respond with “another Republican war.” If anything additional is needed, just add the number of Americans killed in the last Repub wars.

We need to make “the Trump Recession” and “another Republican war” references as widespread as “emails” was in the last election.
