Thank You, Supremes

May 15, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

For today, there’s good news coming from North Carolina.

The Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal in the North Carolina voter ID case that a lower court said had discriminatory intent and ‘almost surgical precision’ targeting African-American voters.

That means the lower court’s decision stands.  North Carolina’s voter ID law is dead.

Chief Justice John Roberts reminded everyone that “the denial of a writ of certiorari imports no expression of opinion upon the merits of the case.”

Hey, Mr. Justice, we’ll take it anyway we can get it.

Every once in a great while, the good guys win one.
    Hallelujah!

Yeah John, to express the opinion that case demanded would require you to have integrity and intestinal fortitude. You could have ended all the frivolous “right” to gerrymander and suppress the vote cases with ONE ruling. But no, you chose to hide instead of making the definitive ruling that would end that bull dung.

    maryelle….Hallelujah, cue the chorus.

  4. In spite of the Hallelujah chorus in the background, this ruling gives me no joy. The snacilbupeR are relentless in their vote suppression efforts. Rest assured the authors of this ‘almost surgical precision’ targeting of North Carolina citizens will continue. It has gone on for over 200 years, one court decision won’t change the hearts or minds of white supremacists from east Texas across the rebellious states to northern Virginia.

  5. OK. Suits me. For now! SCOTUS, I’m watching you!

Well, one for the good guys. And about time.

  7. If my limited understanding of the legal system is correct, sending this back without hearing it means that it doesn’t set a precedent, and every other case of state voter discrimination has to be fought separately, all over again. It applies ONLY to NC. So yay, but a quiet, if determined, yay.

  8. Jane & PKM says:

Rhea, you and Micr are correct. The wording by Roberts concerns me. It’s as if he was speaking in code or tongue, some sort of signal to the wing nuts that until SCROTUS has a clear 5-4 path, they will not make a definitive ruling.

2018 folks! We need Donnie and Mikey out, the House and Senate back with a better chance of restoring sanity to SCROTUS.

I forgot the exact wording the RATS used when they dismantled a major section of the VRA. But the words aren’t important. If not “we don’t need it” they would have used some other cover to pretend equality happened in 1965 and all has been just perfect since. They were wrong in 2013 and they are wrong now. While people like Sessions, Abbott and that Kansas whack-o-bird Kris Kobach exist, the right to vote will be under attack.

  9. Opinionated Hussy says:

Unfortunately, our boys in the NC legislature will just rewrite the dang thing and try again. They’ve passed something similar a couple of times already….even though we keep slapping them down for it. And the Supremes have given them no reason not to.

  10. I’ll take any bit of good news I can get. This works for me for now.
