Strauss Should Wear this as a Badge of Honor

January 29, 2018 By: El Jefe Category: Holy Crap

The Texas State Republican executive committee voted on Saturday to censure outgoing speaker Joe Strauss for standing up for human and equal rights.  Hard right goons were very frustrated last session when Strauss stood in the way of Patrick’s asinine Bathroom Bill and other bills that did nothing to help anyone but homophobic white supremacists.  More amazing?  The censure vote took a 2/3rds majority to pass, and they got it.  One of those opposing the censure vote was Michael McCloskey of Cedar Park who said, “The Republican Party of Texas has changed into something most mainstream Republicans would not recognize.”

That statement wins the day for the most understatement.

  1. Well, color me “not surprised”! This kind of witless and spineless stuff seems to be really enjoying its hey-day.

  2. G.O.P. has always stood for Greedy Old Perverts. Nothing new here.

  3. Sometimes I don’t think Texas politicians can do anything more to shock me, but this one had my mouth drop open. How does any decent human survive them?

  4. In case anyone here hasn’t seen it, I believe El Jefe’s post title comes from a speech that Lawrence O’Donnell wrote for “The West Wing.” It’s a bit long for a tattoo so I ought to commit it to memory:

“What did Liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party? I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things, every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, ‘Liberal,’ as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work, Senator. Because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.”

  5. Rhea, thanks putting that speech in your comment. It’s perfect.

  6. Rhea:
I remember seeing that, and having the same kind of reaction as watching a receiver make a one handed catch in the end zone to win the game. The republicans in the West Wing era would be considered socialists by what passes for today’s repugnantcans.
