Mixed Bag of Supremes

June 23, 2016 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

This morning, so far, the court has upheld affirmative action as a factor in admission to the University of Texas.  That’s good because the more inclusive we are, the more tolerant we become.

And … they stuck down President Obama immigration policy on a 4 – 4 vote because we are not near tolerant enough yet.

  1. JJ, I work on immigration issues in my office. The court’s decision was actually a TIE vote which means this thing can drag on for a lot more time. This is not the way I had hoped it would go as so many people are directly impacted but it is also not a clear win for Judge Hanen and his posse. Its only a pause in the proceedings.

Looking at forthcoming changes in the SCOTUS, we could see a shift in ideology lasting for 30 years.

We’re 1 for 2 so far, hopefully we can go 2-1; great birthday present Juanita.

  3. “The court’s conservative justices made clear, however, that they were impatient with the continued use of affirmative action, more than a decade after a ruling by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor upheld racial preferences in college admissions but said they should be unnecessary in 25 years.”

Yeah, and we were supposed to have hoverboards and self-cleaning clothes by now. Not to mention the snarky robot maid.

“Post racial society” …. where should we begin that discussion? With the arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. at his own door or the number of POC gunned down by law enforcement for major crimes like breathing while black?

Or, maybe with those exploiting immigrant labor? Deportation Donnie sure loves those “work visa” loopholes.

The non-decision on immigration may have just won the presidential race for Democrats. Latinas, Mexicans and other minorities are outraged and will get out the vote in November.
Take heart, all is not lost. Let the RKlan savor their “victory”. It will be short-lived.

  6. People who are still gung-ho for ‘Bernie or Bust’ are getting a prequel of what ‘Bust’ would look like.

I like Hillary (also like Bernie), but whatever you think of her please don’t let Donald Trump nominate our next Supreme Court Justices. People get hurt by a right-wing Court.

  7. Linda Phipps says:

Sad for the delay in the inevitable approval of immigration, (unless that jerk Trump is elected) … and happy that the sniveling little brat Fisher learned a lesson. For all the money spent, she could have gone to another school, brought up her grades and participated in meaningful campus organizations and then reapplied for her Junior year.

Immigration can easily change when the newest Scotus justice gets confirmed-if ever.

  9. Mixed bag, indeed. Some of the Bernie bros are waking up to the reality of what a Trump presidency would mean. I think HRC should choose either Julian or Joachim Castro as her running mate. REALLY turn out the Latin vote. Apart from that, they’re really guapo(s).

  10. Well it worked so well the first time that states tried to quit the USA!
