Missed it by ][ THAT Much

Since Howell Cobb, for whose family Cobb County, GA, is named, Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District was represented by Democrats.  But to understand the Democrats representing it, you should know that Howell Cobb was the first head of the Confederacy, until they elected Jeff Davis.

Dixiecrats owned the seat until Newt Gingrich, including fifty years of segregationist Carl Vinson, whose namesake aircraft carrier is currently lost somewhere in the South Pacific, going by the Drumpf MalAdministration’s befuddlement as to where, exactly, Carrier Strike Group 1 actually is.

Once Newtie was forced out of office in ignominy, it was won in a special election by a Republican with 65% of the vote, over another Republican with 25% of the vote, over a Democrat with 5% of the vote.

So, this is not exactly a blue district, and never really a progressive district, until last night.

Jon Ossof, a centrist Dem, came within 2% of winning the seat outright!  He garnered 48.1% of the vote, far beyond the 19.8% of the highest Republican vote-getter, Karen Handel, who advances with him beyond this “jungle primary” to the run-off election, to be held in June.  It was an amazing run, but despite his huge “victory” last night, the national GOP is going to drop on this one-on-one race like a ton of burning crosses.

It’s going to be an uphill climb.

Be social and share!

As a political bit of theater, the dems in congress should push for impeachment of the Kushners. Both Ivanka and her husband are legal unpaid advisors to the wanker-in-chief, and can maybe be impeached for high crimes etc. Corruption would do, based on what we see now.

That would give the GrOPers a distraction they can’t ignore.

  2. Congrats to Ossoff!!! Digits crossed here hoping he can make the run-off an historical event as well. Also, news! Jason Chaffetzz will not run again! So far no one from his District has popped up with their intentions.

  3. The republicans will coalesce around Handel (Kudos to her for hurting the Race for the Cure funding efforts, may Karma visit her appropriately). And the RNC and ilk will jump into this race with bags of money.

The question will be what will the DNC do for this race? They got in a bit late but will they commit?

Return to what works. Jon Ossof is obviously not a “bomb thrower.” His positions are relatively mainstream, ergo what the people want. Nay. What the people crave. President Obama won because people want “hope and change.” Senator Sanders gave Hilz a run in the primary, because people want a new path. Donnie won by lying and promising things he never intended to deliver. People want the government to work, despite what the Tea Bagger bomb throwers might lead one to believe. They’re only fooling themselves.

Send Ossof some money, if you can. He needs $ to bring his policy statements to the airwaves with another 20-30% of $ to show his opponent in her own words being the snotty uptight religious right wing regressive snacilbupeR that she is. It’s GA-6. Threading that needle won’t be cheap, but it’s a step in the correct direction. If he’s smart and we’re lucky, DaChipster will be a major player on the Ossof campaign team.

Utah’s Jason Chafedbuttz is not running in 2018. Things are looking up.

BTW Drumpf claimed his twitter barrage turned the tide for wingnuts to prevent a Dem win.

I agree that we all need to support this brave Dem for daring to challenge the Georgia wingnut conclave, regardless of the state in which we reside. Word has it that donations have been pouring in to the Democratic Party since Drumpf took office, so let’s urge the DNC to use it for the runoff in Georgia.

  7. I’ll donate, but I’m concerned that the GOP will make a point of the fact that most of Ossof’s money is coming from out of state. Mind you, it happens with them too, but IOKIYAR.

Karen Handel was the person behind the Susan Komen/ Planned Parenthood nastiness. Google her, she is an awful choice.

Osoff got 97,000+ votes and she got 37,000+ so I cannot see his votes as “a loss”.

    Rhea –
The likelihood that the RNC and or other right-wing groups won’t send Karen Handel big bucks for her run is less than nonexistent.

Ossoff’s campaign has admittedly gotten lots of out-of-state money, most of it was in small donations averaging $40 or so. That trend is likely to continue.

That being the case, Ossoff’s counter is to point out Karen Handel’s donors are wealthy folks trying to buy her the seat while his donors are “just plain folk” helping the good guy’s campaign with their small donations.

Spice Barbie claims Georgia was a big loss for Dems.

  11. Isn’t Handel the one who has run for umpty ump offices and never won? Lets keep it that way!

    IMHO,
A good portion of the snacilbupeR who didn’t vote for Handel in this free-for-all will vote for her against Ossoff. Her 37k votes might grow to 100k+ while Ossoff’s votes will stay roughly the same. There are just more snacilbupeR of every age and stage in Georgia than progressives.

Rob Quist, a Democrat in Montana, is also running in a special election for the US House to be held May 25, 2017. His opponent is a Republican who moved to Montana from New Jersey so he could get a House position. He could use some money, too. His website is:http://robquist.org/
