Hobby Lobby: Barefoot, Pregnant and Crafty

June 30, 2014 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

The Supremes did it on a 5-4 decision.  If you work for Hobby Lobby, being pregnant constantly is a job perk.

You know how the rightwing feels about President Obama?  That’s how I feel about Scalia.  I think we need to see his birth certificate AND his law degree.  Damn Ronald Reagan for appointing his nincompoop.

Be social and share!

  1. I’m expecting a whole lotta corporations getting religion.

    1
  2. I contacted Hobby Lobby and told them my religious beliefs precluded me patronizing their establishment.
    And added “Praise be FSM”

    2
  3. It’s only a matter of time before a non-Christian company files a lawsuit challenging women’s rights for some reason and the Court will tie itself in knots trying to rule *against* that company’s “beliefs”.

    3
  4. Ralph Wiggam says:

I wonder how the insurance companies will take this.

Clearly Plan B is cheaper than pregnancy, labor and birth. Can the insurer raise the price of the policy to cover the added risk?

It seems to me that Hobby Lobby should be paying the difference. And it is unfair to the other policy holders to make them pay the same as H.L. when their risks are lower.

Insurance companies are great at boiling things down to the bottom line. This will hurt their bottom line. The ball is in their court.

    4
  5. The downside to this decision is that The Supreme Court of The United States made the discrimination against women…. not a federal crime….. but a federal law.

The Upside to this is this: No woman who works for one of these religious nutcase companies has to stay working there….. just to keep her health insurance. The ACA allows her to change jobs, and also be able to have health insurance …… regardless….. and where ever.

  6. Uncle Dave says:

There were times, a few years back, when I would be dragged to Hobby Lobby by one who will never shop there again. Never were as many as ten percent of the customers male. So how will women respond? Can you ladies say boycott?

    6
  7. Need to meditate. This ‘supreme’ court is inducing some very unloving feelings.

    7
  8. Interestingly, I have noted that Chick-fil-A (tio) has assumed a much lower political profile since their anti-gay outbreak a while ago.

Is it possible that corporate right-wing religious rants might be bad for business? And this Hobby Lobby one is being widely publicized.

    8
  9. Uncle Dave – I suspect Hobby Lobby won’t suffer in the least. Since the majority of their stores are in the Deep South, and we know that their customers treat the place like any other church of worship (they shop there religiously) then they’ll stay afloat without a problem.

The issue comes in when other privately-held religious corporations start demanding the same things… like not paying for blood transfusions and vaccines, despite what Alito and the other four clueless Johns may think.

  10. Scorpie says:

I am so disgusted by the HL ruling today. I am a craft nut and I have not shopped at hobby lobby since this case went before the Supreme Court.

    10
  11. JAKvirginia says:

Congratulations Hobby Lobby. You just lost a customer.

    11
  12. Sadly, out where I live, this decision is most likely a reason for the townswomen to make a special trip to HL for even more junk than they already have. This place is benighted.

    12
  13. Aggieland liz says:

Nothing less than a firing squad will do for that treasonous fat ba$tard Scalia. I hope his daughters and granddaughters spit on him.

I’d like to put a concrete block upside Roberts head, then Kennedy’s, then Roberts again for good measure.

Neither Hobby Lobby nor Chic-Fil-A has seen me or my money for years now. I wish their employees would stage a walkout, and I hope their thinking customers do too >:#

I’ve come to the conclusion that the only power I have, or am likely to have is this: to not spend my money with co.s I abhor, to vote, and to convince others to vote, preferably in their own best interests.

@Ralph: that was the conclusion I came to also, and I hope the ins co.s stick it to HL etc for making them write another type of policy outside the minimum standards. AND I hope all the remaining employees go to the Marketplace and get their own policies that COVER HORMONE THERAPY, dammit!!

    13
  14. Fred Farklestone says:

E-mail the following to the manager of your local Hobby Lobby!

  15. Any women who are going to be hurt by this vile decision need to know that they can get their birth control in Mexico at a fraction of the cost (without a prescription), or if that isn’t practical, they can send their prescriptions to be filled by Canadian pharmacies at a fraction of the cost of buying them in the States.

I have one prescription that is expensive and not covered by my insurance, and this is the pharmacy I use: https://www.canadadrugs.com/ I have found them efficient, honest, and reliable, and they don’t charge postage fees.

I just hate the way U.S. pharmaceutical companies are ripping us off anyway. If I didn’t have good State of Alaska insurance, I would never get any prescription filled in this country.

    15
  16. Those of you screaming about Scalia (something I do almost every day) need to expand your focus of outrage: Alito (appointed by Dubya) wrote the opinion. Though apparently he said the same thing Scalia would have said, because Scalia didn’t bother to write a concurring opinion about how his interpretation is better than everyone else’s.

Meanwhile, go read Justice Ginsburg’s wonderful dissent. It starts on page. 60 of the pdf of the opinion: http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/13-354_olp1.pdf

I’ve got a meeting in about an hour and I was going to dress up nice for it. But given the news, I’m going to wear my burnt orange “Come and Take It” t-shirt.

    16
  17. Uncle Dave says:

TalG & Mary C, You are probably right in assuming that some will shop at Hobby Lobby as a measure of support. At least two folks I know take Chic-Fil-A breakfast sandwiches to work for that reason. But people can eat those sandwiches. Just a guess, but it seems likely a boycott of Hobby Lobby poses a greater threat and could send a significant message.

    17
  18. Marge Wood says:

I’ve boycotted Hobby Lobby for years. Remember, the alternative is JOANN’S or MICHAEL’s or other smaller craft stores. Nobody has to go to Hobby Lobby. Other places I boycott:
    Target, re: open carry guns
Exxon, won’t support renewable energy, compete against their own mom and pop stores, etc.
Nestle’s, longest boycott (40 plus years), re: infant formula marketing in poor countries, and also their selling bottled water.
    the GOP.
Cici’s Pizza, for running Fox News all the time.
Koch brothers, dry your hands on your clothes rather than GP paper towels. Long list of stuff not to buy from them.

    18
  19. I’d never heard of Hobby Lobby before they brought their case. I’ve never shopped there, and never will, although I have a lifelong interest in crafts. The Supremes are supremely crappy. I try not to hate, but I hate the Roberts court’s idiots and ideologues (Roberts, Scalia, Alito, Thomas) with a purple passion.

  20. e platypus onion says:

Not a surprise for this pro-korporation,anti-worker,anti-women’s rights Suckpreme activist rwnj, fun bunch. Scalia’s wife is a vocal, sidewalk counselor against abortion and reproductive healthcare clinics-no conflict there, huh,Antonio?

    20
  21. e platypus onion says:

Not a surprise if you have followed this pro-korporate,anti-worker,anti-women’s rights fun bunch of activist rwnj Suckpreme Kourt nimrods. Scalia’s wife is a vocal sidewalk counselor at women’s healthcare clinics trying to talk women out of abortions. No conflict of interest for wingnuts ever.

    21
  22. Polite Kool Marxist says:

We are so screwed, for now. It requires Congressional action to impeach those robed religious freaks. Vote 2014 and 2016 to make it happen.

    22
  23. ConfederateRose says:

The Supremes just nailed the coffin shut on the GOP. No way are women gonna take this lying (no pun intended)down.

    23
  24. maryelle says:

As e platypus says, a court which says that corporations are persons was predictably
going to side with the wealthy business owners and “protect” their religious rights.
Just as they worked their magic on public unions, refusing to allow them to collect dues from all individuals who benefit from their work. They are legally required to extend those benefits to non-paying members.
    The Freakin’ Five conservative justices
have stuck it to the middle class again.

    24
  25. Don A in Pennsyltucky says:

I’m struggling to remember what was in the last Hobby Lobby store I was in and, more to the point, why I was there. I remember in 1999 I bought some coloring books and off-brand crayons there hoping it would provide the children with SOMETHING to do while we were all confined to the cheap La Quinta hotel room in between excursions with the realtor while we looked for a house in our price range that didn’t have termites or a high-voltage power line on the other side of the fence. I still have the crayon box on my desk — they are the crappiest crayons I have ever seen.

I know we patronized it some other times during our 3-1/2 years in hell (er I mean Harris County) but my memory is cloudy on what may have taken us there. All I can remember is about 2 acres of crappy stuff that you could take home and decorate — oh that’s right we got a lot of glitter and ink there.

All by way of saying that I’m glad I didn’t give them much of my money and that they haven’t gotten so much as the proverbial red cent from us since 2003. I wouldn’t be at all unhappy to learn that their employees were spreading contagious diseases to all the people who didn’t get vaccinations for common childhood diseases.

    25
  26. Isn’t Wal-Mart a family owned business? I can’t afford to dabble in stocks so I wouldn’t know for sure, but I’m always reading about the Walton family holdings.

If so I bet they’re figuring out how to take advantage of this ruling. My mind’s working but I sure won’t give them any suggestions.

    26
  27. AlanInAustin says:

According to the IRS, over 90% of corporations are “closely held” like Hobby Lobby.

The floodgate of suits for each of their peculiar religious beliefs has now been opened.

    27
  28. Waiting for a business to declare that their female employees have to wear burqas because… the company has a religion.

Hey, CRUZ! If you’re not using that Canadian citizenship, can I borrow it for awhile? I hear it’s getting warmer up there, anyway.

    29
  30. Rhea – me too! I can’t wait for a non-Xtian business to ask for exemptions.

    30
  31. Corporations have all the rights and NONE of the responsibilities of people. Miemaw is right, they just declared open season on women and made it the law!

  33. Marge Wood says:

Oh, aNd Walmart. I have boycotted them for years. Right now I am annoyed at TARGET for their letting folks with whoppin’ big guns wander around in their stores. I cannot find a place to tell them. They do not want to hear from anyone unless someone wants to buy something or get something fixed. Anyone have a way to contact Target?

    33
  34. Marge Wood says:

Hey we could all go into Hobby Lobby or Target or WalMart with burqas. Grin. Do they have policies on Muslim customers? I remember the day after 9/11 a Muslim friend and I wore big head scarves and ate at a middle eastern restaurant.

  36. One of these days (as the song goes) there will be a privately held company owns by Jehovah’s Witnesses and they will refuse coverage for anything involving blood! Its out there! And its coming! And SCOTUS, lets just see how you tiptoe around that in hobnail boots!

    36
  37. Suzanne says:

Since SCOTUS ruled corporations are people, I can’t wait for Texas to execute one of them. Hobby Lobby would be a good place to start.

    37
  38. Ralph Wiggam says:

OK, here is a little salve for the wounds. Imagine Hillary Clinton appointing Scalia’s replacement. And Thomas, and Kennedy. Kinda makes ya grin don’t it.

If we control the White House we can control the Judiciary. That’s why we MUST win in 2016. It is not a battle for the White House, but a battle for the Supreme Court.

    39
  40. I could damn Ronald Reagan all day and still have a list a mile long.

    40
  41. Angelo_Frank says:

The ruling by the SCOTUS is effectively going to enable privately-held corporations to discriminate against not only their employees, but their customer base, purely based upon any so-called religious belief held by the owners of the corporation. A truly bad ruling by the radical element of the court that will have constitutional ramifications down the road.

    41
  42. Polite Kool Marxist says:

Marge Wood & moderators, apologies for the messed up link. Tried to do a short url, with zippo success. Anyway Marge, googled Target’s main page and surfed through a bunch of their ‘contact’ links and finally found one that had a direct e-mail to corporate.

Off to find every social media used by Hobby Lobby and carpet bomb the Greens. Oh the irony, most of their crap comes from China, a country with mandatory abortion after the birth of the first child. Imagine that, Hobby Lobby sponsors abortion, while protesting reproductive health.

H is for hypocrite, O is for obtuse, B is for bigot or B is for brutality, and Y is for yeeeeeesh. While Lobby is just what they did at the Supreme Wrong. Not real settled into the idea that Congress is for sale with the lobbyists. But now the highest court in the land is for sale. That is really wrong.

    42
  43. @Ralph #38 – I heard that Justice Ginsburg — who is in frail health — has vowed not to retire (or croak) unless the next president elected is a Democrat. Of course, her own mortality is not up to her — it’s up to the gods, but hopefully they will let her serve out her term in good health under Obama and then retire voluntarily under Hillary or Joe or whatever Dem Prez is at the helm in ’16.

    43
  44. OK, Hobby Lobby owners have opened the door to get sued personally because of this SCOTUS decision. This is why so many lawyers and other businesses were not backing them up on this. And once this happens of course HL will scream persecution of Christians but hey they opened the doors themselves. Well, after HL, Citizens United!

    44
  45. VintageMomma says:

Did you read that (Un)Justice Kennedy had the nerve to suggest that the federal government could choose to pay for contraception for employees in companies like HL? Really? Ronald RayGun’s boy who wants gov’t. out of our lives is gonna ask the federal gov’t to step in and help a gol darn business take care of it’s business? Am I missing something here or is he just a Supreme Hypocrite?

    45
  46. katydid says:

i vote for impeachment of the scotus 5 and no further men be allowed to be nominated for the next 100 years.

oh, and since HL won, i propose that all male employees be required to have vasectomies as a condition of employment.

    46
  47. Miss Prissybritches says:

Would not buy so much as a damned glue stick at Hobby Lobby. Pigs.

    47
  48. Elise Von Holten says:

Haven’t been there in ages, checked out the lists of who and what to boycott long ago and still won’t shop at those closely held crazy family corporations. Just wish we could tax them out of existence–I don’t want or need religion in my business dealings–ever! I worry about my granddaughters if this is how it’s going in America…my grandmother had 11 children…no one can handle that many mouths to feed–these people are crazy and birth control pills are used for so much more than birth control…the Supremes have got to go!

    48
  49. … and damn the whole Democratic Senate delegation for participating in a unanimous confirmation of this oaf.

    49
  50. Without a single doubt the five Justices who made the majority opinion/vote just was giving back to the President
who nominated them to the HIGH COURT! A WOMAN’S
HEALTH and personal choices should not be a matter of concern to any form of religious belief that the owners of
a private or public corporation hold! THIS WAS DEFINITELY
    NOT ABOUT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!
