Hey, He Was Just Teasing You For Being … You Know, Different

April 19, 2015 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Darryl Mills is an Alderman in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

Wrightsville is a town of 2,500 southern souls.  It is 98.11% white.  A big .2% of those folks are African American.  My pocket calculator says that means 5 people.

UnknownSo when Alderman Mills called the bartender Mia Banks at the King Neptune Restaurant a “mixed breed,” he was a little stunned that she was offended.

He was, of course, just kidding.

In an interview, Mills confirmed he called Banks a “mixed breed” and used an expletive. He said he and Banks have had a bantering and teasing relationship for years.

Yes, I can think of all manner of friendly jokes, comments and stories that use the term “mixed breed” in a nice manner.

Mills says that his comments have nothing to do with hm being a Alderman.

He has no plans to resign. “I think this is a personal matter,” he said. “It has nothing to do with Wrightsville Beach.”

People with a double digit IQ disagree.

Banks, who splits her time between Charlotte and Wrightsville Beach, said publicly addressing the comment felt like the right thing to do.

“He is in a position of power and I think he needs to be held accountable for his actions,” she said.

Now I know this is going to come as surprise to you but even though the position of alderman is non-partisan, Alderman Mills is a …. yep.

He’s a bit of a “mixed breed” himself. Racist and stupid. Oh, wait…

  2. Polite Kool Marxist says:

Darryl really meant to say, “you know, mixed, half woman and half human.” See? Darryl isn’t a racist. Bet he’s quite the spark with the ladies, too. Give the man a shovel ….

  3. Why oh why do these goof balls actually believe that as a public official nothing they do is worthy of sanction! Do they actually believe that being in public office automatically puts a halo around their head?

  4. Mah Fellow Murkuhn says:

Perhaps not all Republicans are racist, but pretty much all racists are Republicans. The few who aren’t are too far out in right field to qualify, like the Randy Randites and other “Libertarian” sects.

  5. “He said he and Banks have had a bantering and teasing relationship for years.”

Well, one of them has. The one with the “I was just funnin’ ya! Ain’t you got no sense of humor?” attitude.

Wonder if he’d call the US President a “mixed breed” to his face. (Actually I think Obama referred to himself as a “mutt” once, so he might get away with it, but that doesn’t make it nice.)

    5
  6. F. Darryl Mills. The “F” stands for Fascist.

    6
  7. Mah Fellow, I presume you were riffing on John Stuart Mill:
“Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.”

    7
  8. Monty, maybe the F stands for (squint a little, Mama) “Fookwit.” How bad can it be, that he chooses to go by “Darryl” instead?

  9. RepubAnon says:

It’s sad that these bozos think that “Oh, I was just kidding” excuses anything they say.

  10. we’re all mixed breeds..

  11. A bantering and teasing relationship normally works both ways. Unless she gets to call him a honkie peckerwood and he responds with a smile, then they don’t have a bantering and teasing relationship.

I don’t know what she is, but he is an unmixed fool.

    11
  12. Yellowdoggranny, we are most certainly all mixed breeds, but most of us stick to some form of homo sapiens. Not sure about this guy. I think I see some golden retriever around the jawline.

This tool looks like a Syeve Doocy clone(from Fake noize). Uigghhhh!

  14. I don’t understand the extreme reactions.

He said something in poor taste–no argument. He saw it upset her and immediately apologized and followed up with an email apology.

Why does this incident also require that he step out of public office in so many people’s opinion? I just don’t get it. Yeah it was poor taste, but who among us haven’t cast a similar stone in our lives? Why are the apologies not sufficient. Is it that folks don’t feel the apology is sincere?

I just don’t get why the extreme expectations. We are all human–even the rat-bast**ds–and we all should be able to have sincere apologies accepted for our flubs, without turning it into a public shaming offense. Social media has overwhelmed our sense of proportion I think.

I agree with LynnN: if the bartender can’t return in kind, it is not that kind of relationship. And yes, Star, we all do stupid things sometimes. I know I do. I hope that Mills listens to himself more. Thing is, that type of attitude shows up all the time in one place or another. I’m glad I don’t live over there.

    15
  16. Aggieland Liz says:

I agree with LynnN and Starr and like Marge’s common sense approach too. I didn’t read the story; if Mills made an honest apology, well good for him – but SHE doesn’t have to accept the apology, and she doesn’t have to continue the bantering OR the friendship. The problem is, people in the service sector have to “put up” with a certain amount of BS from customers, and it can be especially in bars, you can ask any cocktail waitress. But if he hit a hot spot and she told him off…well, good for her too, and maybe he will learn something!

  17. Aggieland Liz says:

I’m sorry Star, my phone wants your name to have 2 Rs. I told it off, but it is unapologetic!

    17
  18. maryelle says:

His apology sounds more like a justification, which is presumably why the young woman went public.

    18
  19. Marge Wood says:

Lots we don’t know, like how many drinks had he had, or how much haD she already put up with in the name of getting a decent tip or does he follow her out of the bar at night etc.

  20. Zora Laveau says:

The linked article only says Mills used an expletive. According to Ms Banks, he called her a “mixed breed bitch.” She has started a Facebook page called “Wrightsville Beach, Not Wrightsville Bigots,” and welcomes comments.
