Because Houston Isn’t Freaked Out Enough Already

This happened yesterday morning in Houston …

WARNING!  Turn off the sound because there’s some really bad language.  Once you watch it, you’ll understand why.

  1. I probably would have said worse (or at least thought it). This kind of stupid $+%t happens frequently in San Antonio even when there are signs giving the height of the overpass. I don’t wish the driver ill, but his future driving should not be in anything other than a go-cart in an enclosed area.

  2. I had to watch the crash for a third time before I realized that the car windshield was already cracked. But yes, an impressive takedown. I hope that’s not a significant evacuation route.

  3. There’s a notorious railroad underpass in Durham NC that has clearance of 11’8″. It has signs and warning lights, but a lot of drivers still think they’ll fit and don’t. Here’s a compilation of trucks peeling their roofs off or getting stuck:

And here’s a spectacular single example of one exploding:

  4. Ray in Jerrytown says:

When some fool is driving along with his trailer in dump position it really doesn’t matter whether there are bridge clearance signs or not. He ain’t gonna clear nuthin.

  5. Sam in St Paul says:

Considering the scenario, the language was very restrained.

  6. Sometime in the early eighties a dump truck hit an overpass in Houston at highway speed. Flattened the cab. Killed the driver, and knocked the bridge part of the overpass several inches off it’s foundation.

  7. Marcia in CO says:

I would bet you dime to a dollar that most everyone in the Salon has uttered the very same words at some point in their lives … especially after they had teenagers running around the house!
If not … then you are too damned pure to ever have had kids!

  8. Linda Phipps says:

I guess that was a dog or something in the last frame or was that a snake? I would have bailed right there. Forget the language and the truck driver and the cracked windscreen.

  9. Hey, that looked familiar. Turns out there was something like that around here some time ago. Seems that the bucket wiring in the dashboard malfunctioned and the bucket very quietly reared its head without generating a warning light anywhere. No fantastic smash up like I just saw on the video. And believe me, there are people who look right at the height limitation sign and it never registers. That happened with a London style tour bus just 3 miles from my house as it went under a very attractive set-stone overpass. Yes, at least a couple of people died and the rest on the top were gravely injured. That kind of thing is unforgettable.

Lived in Spring Texas (north of Houston) for 18 years. Trucks crashing and spilling fuel burned the same overpass near us twice.

  11. My neighbor a long time ago worked at the rendering plant near Paris, Tx. Every day for YEARS he drove a truck trailer combination from that plant to Dallas via Commerce, Tx, using the loop around Commerce to avoid the low railroad trestle on the State 50. This particular morning he did not take the loop and came to a grinding halt, stuck under the railroad tracks. A conglomeration of help came, but it was one ultra-redneck THP trooper who looked the accident up and down and said “let some air outa yore tires”, walked back to his motor car and went back to work. Sure enough the wrecker guy bled a bit of air out of each rear tractor tire, which gave enough space to creep the rig out from under the trestle. Then the wrecker aired everything back up and off good buddy went. All that much wiser BTW!

  12. Latest word I’ve heard from the Barking Yam still intending to vacate for Camp David this weekend re:Harvey:
“Everyone be safe.” gawd. that is so easy to say as you line up your ball for a putt.

Frankly if Mr. Potatohead could talk, I think we would actually hear something better, brighter and more humane.

  13. It made the noon news in NYC. All my TX peeps, stay safe.

  14. Something strange has happened every time I’ve driven through Houston. I quit trying after getting stuck behind the Gypsy funeral walking down I-45 in the middle of the afternoon.

  15. WA Skeptic says:

There’s one overpass like that in Pensacola, FL, which is notorious. It’s got flashing lights, big signs, etc., but at least once a year there’s a truck that gets stuck there. It’s as if the driver doesn’t think all those warnings don’t apply to him!

  16. martin mercer says:

The most impressive thing about this video is that these two guys witness the event, are within several hundred feet and then proceed to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to render aid or to offer any type of help. They just drive on by… frankly, the M…F… is not the truck driver. Rather, the M…F…’s are these two callous A…H…’s.
