Voter ID and Republican Tears

January 28, 2012 By: Juanita Jean Category: Uncategorized

There’s a joke about a Highway Trooper stopping an Aggie for speeding his way back to College Station. The trooper walks up to the driver’s window of the car and asks the Angie, “Got any ID?”

The Aggie replies, “‘Bout what?”

And that’s exactly how Texas Republicans feel today with their Voter ID. They ain’t got a clue or an ID.

Now, things haven’t exactly gone their way, and Texas Republicans have got to be asking themselves if they’ve been paying the wrong preacher. They are getting hammered over redistricting and are fixing to throw in the towel and give Democrats everything they want just so Texas Republicans can stay viable in picking a Presidential candidate. They just haven’t gotten over the rest of the world not recognizing the brilliance of Rick Perry.

Now comes voter ID. I talked to someone close to the case today and heard a rumor about the judges who will be hearing the case. Grab a handful of this . All three of the judges picked at random could not be better for Democrats. It’s like we won the judge lottery and the Triple Crown in the same day.

I’m gonna sleep like a baby tonight with a grin on my face. Every day I thank God that I’m not a Republican and that goes double down full fisted today.

  1. I’m going to sleep like a baby on this one and I’m up in Ohio.
(Of course our idiot gov closed down early voting last November and would be happy to disenfranchise every democrat in the state.)

  2. Whew! I have been worried about the whole “voter ID”, and how it would affect a lot of minorities who are otherwise qualified to vote. I, too, am glad not to be a Repub–I just wish some members of my own family would open their eyes.
    Sweet dreams, Juanita!!

  3. NPR did a great piece on the problem with these Voter ID laws. Don’t know about yours in Texas but ours in Tennessee looks like it’s gonna disenfranchise a WHOLE bunch of senior citizens, because the state doesn’t put a photo on IDs and drivers licenses for people over age 60. That’s supposed to make it easier for them to renew their DLs but since they now need a picture ID to vote, a lot of seniors are having problems.

Seniors around here tend to vote Republican. So .. woopsies.

    {facepalm}

Funny story: there’s this little old lady who used to clean the GOVERNOR’S OFFICE for 30 years, she’s like 96 years old and has a state issued picture ID — her work ID. But it’s not good enough for Tennessee’s Republicans to let her vote. Some state issued IDs are okay under the law (like a gun permit, of course!) and some are not (like her ID that let her empty the governor’s trash. Go figure.)

So this lady shows up to get her Voter ID and the driver’s license center and the clerk says she can’t have one because she doesn’t have a birth certificate. Well, she’s 96 years old, was born out in the sticks in some shack delivered by a midwife, no birth certificate was issued, etc. Big scandal.

So yeah, that’s how we roll in Tennessee. There’s just no way these stories ever make the Republicans look good.

  4. Here in wonderful Arizona (sorry, but we beat Texas in bat-shite crazy), Alejandrina Cabrera (a U.S. citizen) has been barred by a state judge to run for city council in San Luis, Arizona. The reason? The judge ruled that since state law requires that a person be running for any elected office in Arizona be “proficient” in English and Ms. Cabrera is not.

See, I told you we beat Texas. Oh and I raise you Governor Jan Brewer (also known as GED Jan) and Congressman Jeff Flake.

  6. @Phoenix Justice: Looks like the Rethugs have found a way to reinstitute those “literacy tests” that the Warren Court outlawed. Those people just never stop trying to steal elections that they know they can’t win on merit.

  7. @BarbinDC,

Well, to be reasonable, the Warren Court only struck down literacy tests for voting. Never even got close to qualifications to be elected to office and to think, how many politicians in the U.S. couldn’t read or write a lick of English?

  8. So what is wrong with this picture? Working class people are voting republican despite that party’s obvious agenda of depriving them of the right to vote while broadening the chasm between those who have an awful lot and the majority. And some of this weirdness is the fault of a too commonly shared sense that liberals are intellectually superior. We can no longer afford to assume a know-it-all, noses in the air, disdain for those who should be our friends. Instead we need to welcome them to the fight. We should encourage bubbas for Obama, evangelicals voters for democracy, red necks for reform.
